A world where AI has an imagination

#artificialintelligence

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google's DeepMind, poses with late physicist Stephen Hawking. Hassabis, Hawking and Tesla CEO Elon Musk all endorsed a set of guidelines last year for ethical AI development that will benefit humanity. AI has been a buzzword in Korean society ever since. As AlphaGo retired from competitive gaming in March 2017, the company has instead been concentrating on tackling "a very wide range of problems" that humans find difficult to resolve. "The majority of the AlphaGo team now devotes their time to new projects with the intention of using these general-purpose algorithms to help solve some of the world's most complex challenges in science and medicine," said Demis Hassabis, co-founder of DeepMind, in an email interview with the JoongAng Ilbo to mark the two-year anniversary of the high-profile match.

Seattle radiologist chats about AI, patient misconceptions and more

#artificialintelligence

Seattle radiologist Maria Chong, MD, a body imaging specialist for Radia, said in a new interview that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will "revolutionize radiology" in the next decade. In the interview, part of an upcoming Seattle Magazine cover story, Chong discussed impact AI will have on patient care when asked about the future of healthcare. "Although still an early technology, computers are beginning to interpret images and assist the radiologist in making a rapid, accurate diagnosis," she said. "Eventually, AI in medicine will improve diagnostic accuracy, lower health care costs and enhance our lives." Chong also discussed misconceptions patients have about radiology, patient behavior and other more.

Emmanuel Macron Talks to WIRED About France's AI Strategy

@machinelearnbot

On Thursday, Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, gave a speech laying out a new national strategy for artificial intelligence in his country. The French government will spend โ‚ฌ1.5 billion ($1.85 billion) over five years to support research in the field, encourage startups, and collect data that can be used, and shared, by engineers. The goal is to start catching up to the US and China and to make sure the smartest minds in AI--hello Yann LeCun--choose Paris over Palo Alto. Directly after his talk, he gave an exclusive and extensive interview, entirely in English, to WIRED Editor-in-Chief Nicholas Thompson about the topic and why he has come to care so passionately about it. Nicholas Thompson: First off, thank you for letting me speak with you. It was refreshing to see a national leader talk about an issue like this in such depth and complexity. To get started, let me ask you an easy one. You and your team spoke to hundreds of people while preparing for this. What was the example of how AI works that struck you the most and that made you think, 'Ok, this is going to be really, really important'? Emmanuel Macron: Probably in healthcare--where you have this personalized and preventive medicine and treatment. We had some innovations that I saw several times in medicine to predict, via better analysis, the diseases you may have in the future and prevent them or better treat you.

Artificial Intelligence Ethics: CVU Student Shares Thoughts, Advice To Vermont Lawmakers

#artificialintelligence

Vermont lawmakers are considering legislation to create an artificial intelligence task force. If the bill wins final approval, Vermont will be the first state in the country to take this step. Milo Cress, a junior at Champlain Valley Union High School, went to the Vermont Statehouse this winter to testify in favor of this bill. Vermont Edition recently spoke to Cress about his interest in this subject and the advice he gave state lawmakers looking at the bill. The below interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.

AI can 'help us move mountains' for people and planet, Watson developer says

#artificialintelligence

Neil Sahota is an IBM Master Inventor and World Wide Business Development Leader in the company's Watson Group. He works to create solutions powered by Watson, the supercomputer that he helped to develop which famously competed on the TV quiz show Jeopardy! Sahota is a big believer in the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the lives of people and the health of the environment, and while technology won't solve all human or ecological problems, it has an important role to play, prompting Mongabay to ask him for an interview. Erik Hoffner for Mongabay: At our conservation tech site Wildtech, we increasingly publish news about how AI and machine learning can be applied to conservation, from using eBird to track songbird populations to applications that can curtail illegal rainforest logging. What are your favorite examples of how AI can aid the environment?

The world of Voice AI according to Gary Vaynerchuk

#artificialintelligence

Gary Vaynerchuk and his agency Vayner Media are already known for dominating and owning social media. We caught up with Gary to talk about the massive opportunities and challenges that a future of talking to machines presents. It's going to be one of the core pillars of our interaction. I would say in a decade it's going to rival the cell phone as we know it today. Ultimately because of how much time we spend the cell phone will continue to be the primary, but I genuinely believe that voice AI enabled devices and infrastructure is going to become as crucial as the cell phone in the way we interact with technology.

Russian AI 'Vera' is helping companies find candidates

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A Russian startup has created a realistic looking robot that's being used to interview prospective employees at several top international companies. Called'Vera,' the robot uses artificial intelligence technology to narrow down applicants to the top candidates based on job requirements. Vera was developed by St. Petersburg-based startup Strafory and now counts more than 300 clients, including Pepsi, Ikea and L'Oreal, according to Bloomberg. Pictured is Vera, a robot created by Russian startup Strafory.
