12th Asian Conference on Machine Learning

AIHub

Last week saw the virtual running of the 12th Asian Conference on Machine Learning (ACML). The event had been due to be held in Thailand, but instead went online and the organisers decided to make all content freely available. You can watch all of the invited talks, tutorials, workshops, and video presentations of the contributed papers. Also, find out who won the conference awards. There were four invited speakers: Suriya Gunasekar (Microsoft Research, USA) Rethinking the role of optimization in learning This talk presented an overview of recent results towards understanding how we learn large capacity machine learning models.

Interview with Ionut Schiopu – ICIP 2020 award winner

AIHub

Ionut Schiopu and Adrian Munteanu received a Top Viewed Special Session Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP 2020) for their paper "A study of prediction methods based on machine learning techniques for lossless image coding". Here, Ionut Schiopu tells us more about their work. The research topic of our paper is to introduce a more efficient algorithm for lossless image compression based on Machine Learning (ML) techniques, where the main objective is to minimize the amount of data required to represent the input image without any information loss. In recent years, a new research strategy for coding has emerged by exploring the advances brought by modern ML techniques by proposing novel hybrid coding solutions where specific modules in conventional coding frameworks are replaced with more efficient modules based on ML techniques. The paper follows this research strategy and uses a deep neural network to replace the prediction module in the conventional coding framework.

Branches in Artificial Intelligence to Transform Your Businesses!

On May 8, 2018, Google I/O was held at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. If you are wondering what Google I/O is, don't worry, I've got your back. In the Keynote, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet Inc. (Google's parent company), shared the then-latest developments that Google had been working on. One of the projects that he spoke about was something that maybe no one saw coming; an application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), soon to be on our own smartphones, that left the world in awe. The project was called'Google Duplex'. This initiative enables AI to place a phone call to a hair salon, converse just like us humans, and book a haircut appointment - and the part where your jaws drop is that all of this takes place in the background on your phone, without any intervention of yours!

The Hugo Awards will have a video game category in 2021

Engadget

For the first time in its storied history, the Hugo Awards will honor a video game. The annual literary award has avoided recognizing the medium for years, but present circumstances being what they are, it will make an exception at the next World Science Fiction Convention in 2021. As you might have guessed, the about-face came out of the coronavirus pandemic, and more specifically the amount of time most in the sci-fi and fantasy communities have spent playing video games in lockdown. In 2021, there's going to be a Hugo Award For Best Video Game. The DisCon III committee has chosen to create this special category for 2021 only, as provided for by the rules of the World Science Fiction Society.#HugoAwards

Episode 433: Jay Kreps on ksqlDB : Software Engineering Radio

#artificialintelligence

It makes it easier to get correct results and reason about what happens if the machine fails in the middle of processing something. Um, but you do trade off, you know, a little bit of flexibility in, in how you, how you write that versus the low-level read and write. And then one level up from that, uh, I think is, is ksqlDB. So the analogy you can use is, you know, uh, if you've ever used one of these key value interfaces like rocks DB itself, you know, it's kind of very flexible and allowing you to work with data at a low level, um, probably more so than a SQL interface, but it's actually a lot more work for kind of simple stuff, uh, that you might want to do that then using a SQL database.

Cellular Automata in Stream Learning - KDnuggets

#artificialintelligence

This post is dedicated to John Horton Conway and Tom Fawcett, who recently passed away, for their noted contributions to the field of cellular automata and machine learning. With the advent of fast data streams, real-time machine learning has become a challenging task. They can be affected by the concept drift effect, by which stream learning methods have to detect changes and adapt to these evolving conditions. Several emerging paradigms such as the so-called "Smart Dust", "Utility Fog", "TinyML" or "Swarm Robotics" are in need for efficient and scalable solutions in real-time scenarios. Cellular Automata (CA), as low-bias and robust-to-noise pattern recognition methods with competitive classification performances, meet the requirements imposed by the aforementioned paradigms mainly due to their simplicity and parallel nature.

Cracking the Facebook's Machine Learning SWE Interview.

To cover the complete interview process, I have divided this post into separate events based on the timeline. This will help you to evaluate the process and preparation time required for each stage of the interview better. If you are looking to interview for a similar position, it is important to evaluate the profiles which get picked for the interview process. Now, I don't know exactly how my profile stood in the pool of candidates, but I am sharing my resume as a sample profile that got picked for such interviews. As you can see, I had completed 4 years of my Ph.D. by this time, publishing majorly in the areas of Machine Learning, Data Visualization, and Computer Vision.

Artificial Intelligence And Neural Networks For Everyone, Even Kids.

Artificial Intelligence (or AI) is a field in computer science that focuses on solving problems by applying learning techniques (and some math). In some ways, AI and the field, in general, focuses on building programs that try and imitate the way your own brain works. But let's talk about learning some more because it's important in understanding artificial intelligence. There are so many ways we as humans or even other animals learn. Let's take my dog, Buster. When Buster was a pup I wanted to teach him to roll over, but I had two main problems.
