A Survey of Document-Level Information Extraction

Document-level information extraction (IE) is a crucial task in natural language processing (NLP). This paper conducts a systematic review of recent document-level IE literature. In addition, we conduct a thorough error analysis with current state-of-the-art algorithms and identify their limitations as well as the remaining challenges for the task of document-level IE. According to our findings, labeling noises, entity coreference resolution, and lack of reasoning, severely affect the performance of document-level IE. The objective of this survey paper is to provide more insights and help NLP researchers to further enhance document-level IE performance.


A Lightweight and Transferable Design for Robust LEGO Manipulation

LEGO is a well-known platform for prototyping pixelized objects. However, robotic LEGO prototyping (i.e. manipulating LEGO bricks) is challenging due to the tight connections and accuracy requirement. This paper investigates safe and efficient robotic LEGO manipulation. In particular, this paper reduces the complexity of the manipulation by hardware-software co-design. An end-of-arm tool (EOAT) is designed, which reduces the problem dimension and allows large industrial robots to easily manipulate LEGO bricks. In addition, this paper uses evolution strategy to safely optimize the robot motion for LEGO manipulation. Experiments demonstrate that the EOAT performs reliably in manipulating LEGO bricks and the learning framework can effectively and safely improve the manipulation performance to a 100% success rate. The co-design is deployed to multiple robots (i.e. FANUC LR-mate 200id/7L and Yaskawa GP4) to demonstrate its generalizability and transferability. In the end, we show that the proposed solution enables sustainable robotic LEGO prototyping, in which the robot can repeatedly assemble and disassemble different prototypes.


Trusta: Reasoning about Assurance Cases with Formal Methods and Large Language Models

Assurance cases can be used to argue for the safety of products in safety engineering. In safety-critical areas, the construction of assurance cases is indispensable. Trustworthiness Derivation Trees (TDTs) enhance assurance cases by incorporating formal methods, rendering it possible for automatic reasoning about assurance cases. We present Trustworthiness Derivation Tree Analyzer (Trusta), a desktop application designed to automatically construct and verify TDTs. The tool has a built-in Prolog interpreter in its backend, and is supported by the constraint solvers Z3 and MONA. Therefore, it can solve constraints about logical formulas involving arithmetic, sets, Horn clauses etc. Trusta also utilizes large language models to make the creation and evaluation of assurance cases more convenient. It allows for interactive human examination and modification. We evaluated top language models like ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and PaLM 2 for generating assurance cases. Our tests showed a 50%-80% similarity between machine-generated and human-created cases. In addition, Trusta can extract formal constraints from text in natural languages, facilitating an easier interpretation and validation process. This extraction is subject to human review and correction, blending the best of automated efficiency with human insight. To our knowledge, this marks the first integration of large language models in automatic creating and reasoning about assurance cases, bringing a novel approach to a traditional challenge. Through several industrial case studies, Trusta has proven to quickly find some subtle issues that are typically missed in manual inspection, demonstrating its practical value in enhancing the assurance case development process.


A Practical Survey on Zero-shot Prompt Design for In-context Learning

The remarkable advancements in large language models (LLMs) have brought about significant improvements in Natural Language Processing(NLP) tasks. This paper presents a comprehensive review of in-context learning techniques, focusing on different types of prompts, including discrete, continuous, few-shot, and zero-shot, and their impact on LLM performance. We explore various approaches to prompt design, such as manual design, optimization algorithms, and evaluation methods, to optimize LLM performance across diverse tasks. Our review covers key research studies in prompt engineering, discussing their methodologies and contributions to the field. We also delve into the challenges faced in evaluating prompt performance, given the absence of a single "best" prompt and the importance of considering multiple metrics. In conclusion, the paper highlights the critical role of prompt design in harnessing the full potential of LLMs and provides insights into the combination of manual design, optimization techniques, and rigorous evaluation for more effective and efficient use of LLMs in various NLP tasks.


Sampling-Based Motion Planning: A Comparative Review

Sampling-based motion planning is one of the fundamental paradigms to generate robot motions, and a cornerstone of robotics research. This comparative review provides an up-to-date guideline and reference manual for the use of sampling-based motion planning algorithms. This includes a history of motion planning, an overview about the most successful planners, and a discussion on their properties. It is also shown how planners can handle special cases and how extensions of motion planning can be accommodated. To put sampling-based motion planning into a larger context, a discussion of alternative motion generation frameworks is presented which highlights their respective differences to sampling-based motion planning. Finally, a set of sampling-based motion planners are compared on 24 challenging planning problems. This evaluation gives insights into which planners perform well in which situations and where future research would be required. This comparative review thereby provides not only a useful reference manual for researchers in the field, but also a guideline for practitioners to make informed algorithmic decisions.


Affect Recognition in Conversations Using Large Language Models

Affect recognition, encompassing emotions, moods, and feelings, plays a pivotal role in human communication. In the realm of conversational artificial intelligence (AI), the ability to discern and respond to human affective cues is a critical factor for creating engaging and empathetic interactions. This study delves into the capacity of large language models (LLMs) to recognise human affect in conversations, with a focus on both open-domain chit-chat dialogues and task-oriented dialogues. Leveraging three diverse datasets, namely IEMOCAP, EmoWOZ, and DAIC-WOZ, covering a spectrum of dialogues from casual conversations to clinical interviews, we evaluated and compared LLMs' performance in affect recognition. Our investigation explores the zero-shot and few-shot capabilities of LLMs through in-context learning (ICL) as well as their model capacities through task-specific fine-tuning. Additionally, this study takes into account the potential impact of automatic speech recognition (ASR) errors on LLM predictions. With this work, we aim to shed light on the extent to which LLMs can replicate human-like affect recognition capabilities in conversations.


Learning to Coordinate with Anyone

In open multi-agent environments, the agents may encounter unexpected teammates. Classical multi-agent learning approaches train agents that can only coordinate with seen teammates. Recent studies attempted to generate diverse teammates to enhance the generalizable coordination ability, but were restricted by pre-defined teammates. In this work, our aim is to train agents with strong coordination ability by generating teammates that fully cover the teammate policy space, so that agents can coordinate with any teammates. Since the teammate policy space is too huge to be enumerated, we find only dissimilar teammates that are incompatible with controllable agents, which highly reduces the number of teammates that need to be trained with. However, it is hard to determine the number of such incompatible teammates beforehand. We therefore introduce a continual multi-agent learning process, in which the agent learns to coordinate with different teammates until no more incompatible teammates can be found. The above idea is implemented in the proposed Macop (Multi-agent compatible policy learning) algorithm. We conduct experiments in 8 scenarios from 4 environments that have distinct coordination patterns. Experiments show that Macop generates training teammates with much lower compatibility than previous methods. As a result, in all scenarios Macop achieves the best overall coordination ability while never significantly worse than the baselines, showing strong generalization ability.


Construction contract risk identification based on knowledge-augmented language model

Construction contracts are the foundation for relationships among project stakeholders, protecting their rights and interests throughout the project's lifespan. Contractual risks remain a long-standing and significant concern for all parties involved in a construction project, and failure to identify these risks in the contract clauses may result in disputes, posing a risk of project loss. According to a recent report (Victoria et al., 2022), the global average values and durations of disputes are $52.6M and 15.4 months, respectively. Contract review involves several important tasks, such as identifying and modifying ambiguous clauses (Artan Ilter and Bakioglu, 2018), clarifying vaguely stated requirements (Hassan and Le, 2020; ul Hassan et al., 2020; ul Hassan and Le, 2021), and correcting inaccurately referenced specifications (Hamie and Abdul-Malak, 2018). Currently, the construction industry mainly relies on manual review due to the lack of sophisticated and reliable automated methods for identifying construction contract risks (CCRI). However, studies (Lee et al., 2019; Moon et al., 2021) have shown that this labor-intensive approach is error-prone and time-consuming.


Unlocking Model Insights: A Dataset for Automated Model Card Generation

Language models (LMs) are no longer restricted to ML community, and instruction-tuned LMs have led to a rise in autonomous AI agents. As the accessibility of LMs grows, it is imperative that an understanding of their capabilities, intended usage, and development cycle also improves. Model cards are a popular practice for documenting detailed information about an ML model. To automate model card generation, we introduce a dataset of 500 question-answer pairs for 25 ML models that cover crucial aspects of the model, such as its training configurations, datasets, biases, architecture details, and training resources. We employ annotators to extract the answers from the original paper. Further, we explore the capabilities of LMs in generating model cards by answering questions. Our initial experiments with ChatGPT-3.5, LLaMa, and Galactica showcase a significant gap in the understanding of research papers by these aforementioned LMs as well as generating factual textual responses. We posit that our dataset can be used to train models to automate the generation of model cards from paper text and reduce human effort in the model card curation process. A Survey on Datasets for Decision-making of Autonomous Vehicle

Autonomous vehicles (AV) are expected to reshape future transportation systems, and decision-making is one of the critical modules toward high-level automated driving. To overcome those complicated scenarios that rule-based methods could not cope with well, data-driven decision-making approaches have aroused more and more focus. The datasets to be used in developing data-driven methods dramatically influences the performance of decision-making, hence it is necessary to have a comprehensive insight into the existing datasets. From the aspects of collection sources, driving data can be divided into vehicle, environment, and driver related data. This study compares the state-of-the-art datasets of these three categories and summarizes their features including sensors used, annotation, and driving scenarios. Based on the characteristics of the datasets, this survey also concludes the potential applications of datasets on various aspects of AV decision-making, assisting researchers to find appropriate ones to support their own research. The future trends of AV dataset development are summarized.
