Experts' View on Challenges and Needs for Fairness in Artificial Intelligence for Education

In recent years, there has been a stimulating discussion on how artificial intelligence (AI) can support the science and engineering of intelligent educational applications. Many studies in the field are proposing actionable data mining pipelines and machine-learning models driven by learning-related data. The potential of these pipelines and models to amplify unfairness for certain categories of students is however receiving increasing attention. If AI applications are to have a positive impact on education, it is crucial that their design considers fairness at every step. Through anonymous surveys and interviews with experts (researchers and practitioners) who have published their research at top-tier educational conferences in the last year, we conducted the first expert-driven systematic investigation on the challenges and needs for addressing fairness throughout the development of educational systems based on AI. We identified common and diverging views about the challenges and the needs faced by educational technologies experts in practice, that lead the community to have a clear understanding on the main questions raising doubts in this topic. Based on these findings, we highlighted directions that will facilitate the ongoing research towards fairer AI for education.

Bridging the knowledge gap on AI and machine-learning technologies โ€“ Physics World

How much is too much? These are questions that cut to the heart of a complex issue currently preoccupying senior medical physicists when it comes to the training and continuing professional development (CPD) of the radiotherapy physics workforce. What's exercising management and educators specifically is the extent to which the core expertise and domain knowledge of radiotherapy physicists should evolve to reflect โ€“ and, in so doing, best support โ€“ the relentless progress of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning technologies within the radiation oncology workflow. In an effort to bring a degree of clarity and consensus to the collective conversation, the ESTRO 2022 Annual Congress in Copenhagen last month featured a dedicated workshop session entitled "Every radiotherapy physicist should know about AI/machine learningโ€ฆbut how much?" With several hundred delegates packed into Room D5 at the Bella Center, speakers were tasked by the session moderators with defending a range of "optimum scenarios" to align the know-how of medical physicists versus emerging AI/machine-learning opportunities in the radiotherapy clinic.


Retrain, or not Retrain? Online Machine Learning with Gradient Boosting

Problems may arise when we pass newly available samples to our pre-build machine learning pipeline. In the case of predictive algorithms, the registered performances may diverge from the expected ones. The causes behind discrepancies are variegated.


Can Population-based Engagement Improve Personalisation? A Novel Dataset and Experiments

This work explores how population-based engagement prediction can address cold-start at scale in large learning resource collections. The paper introduces i) VLE, a novel dataset that consists of content and video based features extracted from publicly available scientific video lectures coupled with implicit and explicit signals related to learner engagement, ii) two standard tasks related to predicting and ranking context-agnostic engagement in video lectures with preliminary baselines and iii) a set of experiments that validate the usefulness of the proposed dataset. Our experimental results indicate that the newly proposed VLE dataset leads to building context-agnostic engagement prediction models that are significantly performant than ones based on previous datasets, mainly attributing to the increase of training examples. VLE dataset's suitability in building models towards Computer Science/ Artificial Intelligence education focused on e-learning/ MOOC use-cases is also evidenced. Further experiments in combining the built model with a personalising algorithm show promising improvements in addressing the cold-start problem encountered in educational recommenders. This is the largest and most diverse publicly available dataset to our knowledge that deals with learner engagement prediction tasks. The dataset, helper tools, descriptive statistics and example code snippets are available publicly.


Langevin Monte Carlo for Contextual Bandits

We study the efficiency of Thompson sampling for contextual bandits. Existing Thompson sampling-based algorithms need to construct a Laplace approximation (i.e., a Gaussian distribution) of the posterior distribution, which is inefficient to sample in high dimensional applications for general covariance matrices. Moreover, the Gaussian approximation may not be a good surrogate for the posterior distribution for general reward generating functions. We propose an efficient posterior sampling algorithm, viz., Langevin Monte Carlo Thompson Sampling (LMC-TS), that uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to directly sample from the posterior distribution in contextual bandits. Our method is computationally efficient since it only needs to perform noisy gradient descent updates without constructing the Laplace approximation of the posterior distribution. We prove that the proposed algorithm achieves the same sublinear regret bound as the best Thompson sampling algorithms for a special case of contextual bandits, viz., linear contextual bandits. We conduct experiments on both synthetic data and real-world datasets on different contextual bandit models, which demonstrates that directly sampling from the posterior is both computationally efficient and competitive in performance.


Towards Systems Education for Artificial Intelligence: A Course Practice in Intelligent Computing Architectures

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) community, education in AI is receiving more and more attentions. There have been many AI related courses in the respects of algorithms and applications, while not many courses in system level are seriously taken into considerations. In order to bridge the gap between AI and computing systems, we are trying to explore how to conduct AI education from the perspective of computing systems. In this paper, a course practice in intelligent computing architectures are provided to demonstrate the system education in AI era. The motivation for this course practice is first introduced as well as the learning orientations. The main goal of this course aims to teach students for designing AI accelerators on FPGA platforms. The elaborated course contents include lecture notes and related technical materials. Especially several practical labs and projects are detailed illustrated. Finally, some teaching experiences and effects are discussed as well as some potential improvements in the future.
