Multi class activity classification in videos using Motion History Image generation
Human action recognition has been a topic of interest across multiple fields ranging from security to entertainment systems. Tracking the motion and identifying the action being performed on a real time basis is necessary for critical security systems. In entertainment, especially gaming, the need for immediate responses for actions and gestures are paramount for the success of that system. We show that Motion History image has been a well established framework to capture the temporal and activity information in multi dimensional detail enabling various usecases including classification. We utilize MHI to produce sample data to train a classifier and demonstrate its effectiveness for action classification across six different activities in a single multi-action video. We analyze the classifier performance and identify usecases where MHI struggles to generate the appropriate activity image and discuss mechanisms and future work to overcome those limitations.
The Future of Learning in the Age of Generative AI: Automated Question Generation and Assessment with Large Language Models

In recent years, large language models (LLMs) and generative AI have revolutionized natural language processing (NLP), offering unprecedented capabilities in education. This chapter explores the transformative potential of LLMs in automated question generation and answer assessment. It begins by examining the mechanisms behind LLMs, emphasizing their ability to comprehend and generate human-like text. The chapter then discusses methodologies for creating diverse, contextually relevant questions, enhancing learning through tailored, adaptive strategies. Key prompting techniques, such as zero-shot and chain-of-thought prompting, are evaluated for their effectiveness in generating high-quality questions, including open-ended and multiple-choice formats in various languages. Advanced NLP methods like fine-tuning and prompt-tuning are explored for their role in generating task-specific questions, despite associated costs. The chapter also covers the human evaluation of generated questions, highlighting quality variations across different methods and areas for improvement. Furthermore, it delves into automated answer assessment, demonstrating how LLMs can accurately evaluate responses, provide constructive feedback, and identify nuanced understanding or misconceptions. Examples illustrate both successful assessments and areas needing improvement. The discussion underscores the potential of LLMs to replace costly, time-consuming human assessments when appropriately guided, showcasing their advanced understanding and reasoning capabilities in streamlining educational processes.
Information Discovery in e-Commerce

Electronic commerce, or e-commerce, is the buying and selling of goods and services, or the transmitting of funds or data online. E-commerce platforms come in many kinds, with global players such as Amazon, Airbnb, Alibaba, eBay and platforms targeting specific geographic regions. Information retrieval has a natural role to play in e-commerce, especially in connecting people to goods and services. Information discovery in e-commerce concerns different types of search (e.g., exploratory search vs. lookup tasks), recommender systems, and natural language processing in e-commerce portals. The rise in popularity of e-commerce sites has made research on information discovery in e-commerce an increasingly active research area. This is witnessed by an increase in publications and dedicated workshops in this space. Methods for information discovery in e-commerce largely focus on improving the effectiveness of e-commerce search and recommender systems, on enriching and using knowledge graphs to support e-commerce, and on developing innovative question answering and bot-based solutions that help to connect people to goods and services. In this survey, an overview is given of the fundamental infrastructure, algorithms, and technical solutions for information discovery in e-commerce. The topics covered include user behavior and profiling, search, recommendation, and language technology in e-commerce.

Reasoning is an essential component of human intelligence as it plays a fundamental role in our ability to think critically, support responsible decisions, and solve challenging problems. Traditionally, AI has addressed reasoning in the context of logic-based representations of knowledge. However, the recent leap forward in natural language processing, with the emergence of language models based on transformers, is hinting at the possibility that these models exhibit reasoning abilities, particularly as they grow in size and are trained on more data. Despite ongoing discussions about what reasoning is in language models, it is still not easy to pin down to what extent these models are actually capable of reasoning. The goal of this workshop is to create a platform for researchers from different disciplines and/or AI perspectives, to explore approaches and techniques with the aim to reconcile reasoning between language models using transformers and using logic-based representations. The specific objectives include analyzing the reasoning abilities of language models measured alongside KR methods, injecting KR-style reasoning abilities into language models (including by neuro-symbolic means), and formalizing the kind of reasoning language models carry out. This exploration aims to uncover how language models can effectively integrate and leverage knowledge and reasoning with it, thus improving their application and utility in areas where precision and reliability are a key requirement.
Lifelong Learning with Non-i.i.d. Tasks
In this work we aim at extending theoretical foundations of lifelong learning. Previous work analyzing this scenario is based on the assumption that the tasks are sampled i.i.d. Instead we study two scenarios when lifelong learning is possible, even though the observed tasks do not form an i.i.d. In the first case we prove a PAC-Bayesian theorem, which can be seen as a direct generalization of the analogous previous result for the i.i.d. For the second scenario we propose to learn an inductive bias in form of a transfer procedure.
DOBF: A Deobfuscation Pre-Training Objective for Programming Languages
Recent advances in self-supervised learning have dramatically improved the state of the art on a wide variety of tasks. However, research in language model pre-training has mostly focused on natural languages, and it is unclear whether models like BERT and its variants provide the best pre-training when applied to other modalities, such as source code. In this paper, we introduce a new pre-training objective, DOBF, that leverages the structural aspect of programming languages and pre-trains a model to recover the original version of obfuscated source code. We show that models pre-trained with DOBF significantly outperform existing approaches on multiple downstream tasks, providing relative improvements of up to 12.2% in unsupervised code translation, and 5.3% in natural language code search. Incidentally, we found that our pre-trained model is able to deobfuscate fully obfuscated source files, and to suggest descriptive variable names.
Online Multitask Learning with Long-Term Memory
We introduce a novel online multitask setting. In this setting each task is partitioned into a sequence of segments that is unknown to the learner. Associated with each segment is a hypothesis from some hypothesis class. We give algorithms that are designed to exploit the scenario where there are many such segments but significantly fewer associated hypotheses. We prove regret bounds that hold for any segmentation of the tasks and any association of hypotheses to the segments.
Online Meta-Learning via Learning with Layer-Distributed Memory
We demonstrate that efficient meta-learning can be achieved via end-to-end training of deep neural networks with memory distributed across layers. The persistent state of this memory assumes the entire burden of guiding task adaptation. Moreover, its distributed nature is instrumental in orchestrating adaptation. Ablation experiments demonstrate that providing relevant feedback to memory units distributed across the depth of the network enables them to guide adaptation throughout the entire network. Our results show that this is a successful strategy for simplifying meta-learning -- often cast as a bi-level optimization problem -- to standard end-to-end training, while outperforming gradient-based, prototype-based, and other memory-based meta-learning strategies. Additionally, our adaptation strategy naturally handles online learning scenarios with a significant delay between observing a sample and its corresponding label -- a setting in which other approaches struggle.
Mitigating Forgetting in Online Continual Learning via Instance-Aware Parameterization
Online continual learning is a challenging scenario where a model needs to learn from a continuous stream of data without revisiting any previously encountered data instances. The phenomenon of catastrophic forgetting is worsened since the model should not only address the forgetting at the task-level but also at the data instance-level within the same task. To mitigate this, we leverage the concept of "instance awareness" in the neural network, where each data instance is classified by a path in the network searched by the controller from a meta-graph. To preserve the knowledge we learn from previous instances, we proposed a method to protect the path by restricting the gradient updates of one instance from overriding past updates calculated from previous instances if these instances are not similar. On the other hand, it also encourages fine-tuning the path if the incoming instance shares the similarity with previous instances. The mechanism of selecting paths according to instances similarity is naturally determined by the controller, which is compact and online updated.
Stochastic Online Greedy Learning with Semi-bandit Feedbacks
The greedy algorithm is extensively studied in the field of combinatorial optimization for decades. In this paper, we address the online learning problem when the input to the greedy algorithm is stochastic with unknown parameters that have to be learned over time. We first propose the greedy regret and \epsilon -quasi greedy regret as learning metrics comparing with the performance of offline greedy algorithm. We then propose two online greedy learning algorithms with semi-bandit feedbacks, which use multi-armed bandit and pure exploration bandit policies at each level of greedy learning, one for each of the regret metrics respectively. Both algorithms achieve O(\log T) problem-dependent regret bound ( T being the time horizon) for a general class of combinatorial structures and reward functions that allow greedy solutions.
