Dynamics of Price Sensitivity and Market Structure in an Evolutionary Matching Model

The relationship between equilibrium convergence to a uniform quality distribution and price is investigated in the Q-model, a self-organizing, evolutionary computational matching model of a fixed-price post-secondary higher education created by Ortmann and Slobodyan (2006). The Q-model is replicated with price equaling 100% its Ortmann and Slobodyan (2006) value, Varying the fixed price between 0% and 200% reveals thresholds at which the Q-model reaches different market clustering configurations. Results indicate structural market robustness to prices less than 100% and high sensitivity to prices greater than 100%.
Evolution of International Law: Two Thresholds, Maybe a Third

International law is a singular exception to the top-down systems of law within nations. It presents the puzzle of how the law can be created or changed in the absence of authoritative rule-making institutions. The present paper is part of a work in progress that locates the law-making apparatus of international law in a complex adaptive system. Herein the focus is on thresholds. The first and most detailed threshold describes the emergence of the complex adaptive system. The second threshold consists of the transformation of international law from the voluntary to the automatic. The third threshold is here but has not yet been crossed: actualizing human rights as enforceable claims by individuals against States.
Longitudinal Health Interviewing by Embodied Conversational Agents: Directions for Future Research

Long-term health monitoring is becoming increasingly important with the rising prevalence of chronic disease in the U.S. While many researchers are investigating the use of remote biological monitoring and telemedicine technologies, the use of frequent self-report in long-term health monitoring remains a relatively unstudied area. We discuss some of the many cognitive, affective and contextual issues that must be addressed in maintaining a long-term stream of quality data from patients at home or in the field, and how many of these issues can be addressed through the use of conversational agents.
Multi-Input, Multi-Output Nonlinear Dynamic Modeling to Identify Biologically-Based Transformations as the โCognitive Processesโ Represented by the Ensemble Coding of Neuron Populations

The successful development of neural prostheses requires an understanding of the neurobiological bases of cognitive processes, i.e., how the collective activity of populations of neurons results in a higher-level process not predictable based on knowledge of the individual neurons and/or synapses alone. We have been studying and applying novel methods for representing nonlinear transformations of multiple spike train inputs (multiple time series of pulse train inputs) produced by synaptic and field interactions among multiple subclasses of neurons arrayed in multiple layers of incompletely connected units.
A General Framework for Manifold Alignment

Manifold alignment has been found to be useful in many fields of machine learning and data mining. In this paper we summarize our work in this area and introduce a general framework for manifold alignment. This framework generates a family of approaches to align manifolds by simultaneously matching the corresponding instances and preserving the local geometry of each given manifold. Some approaches like semi-supervised alignment and manifold projections can be obtained as special cases. Our framework can also solve multiple manifold alignment problems and be adapted to handle the situation when no correspondence information is available. The approaches are described and evaluated both theoretically and experimentally, providing results showing useful knowledge transfer from one domain to another. Novel applications of our methods including identification of topics shared by multiple document collections, and biological structure alignment are discussed in the paper.
Predicting and Controlling System-Level Parameters of Multi-Agent Systems

Boid flocking is a system in which several individual agents follow three simple rules to generate swarm-level flocking behavior. To control this system, the user must adjust the agent program parameters, which indirectly modifies the flocking behavior. This is unintuitive because the properties of the flocking behavior are non-explicit in the agent program. In this paper, we discuss a domain-independent approach for detecting and controlling two emergent properties of boids: density and a qualitative threshold effect of swarming vs. flocking. Also, we discuss the possibility of applying this approach to detecting and controlling traffic jams in traffic simulations.
Modeling and Simulating Community Sentiments and Interactions at the Pacific Missile Range Facility

PMRFSim is a proof of concept geospatial social agent-based simulation capable of examining the interactions of 60,000+ agents over a simulated year within a few minutes. PMRFSim utilizes real world data from sources ranging from the U.S. Census Bureau, a regional sociologist, and base security. PMRFSim models two types of agents, normal and adverse agents. Adverse agents have harmful intent and goals to spread negative sentiment and acquire intelligence. All agents are endowed with demographic and geospatial attributes. Agents interact with each other and respond to events. PMRFSim allows an analyst to construct various what-if scenarios and generates numerous graphs that characterize the social landscape. This analysis is intended to aid public affairs officers understand the social landscape.
Towards Uniform Implementation of Architectural Diversity

Multi-representational architectures exploit diversity to yield the breadth of capabilities required for intelligent behavior in the world, but in so doing can sacrifice too much of the complementary benefits of architectural uniformity. The proposal here is to couple the benefits of diversity and uniformity through establishment of a uniform graph-based implementation level for diverse architectures.
Involving Healthcare Consumers in Knowledge Acquisition for Virtual Healthcare

Knowledge acquisition (KA) is essential to creating effective virtual healthcare systems. KA is typically done with expert users such as clinicians and psychologists. In this paper, we describe knowledge acquisition activities which we carried out with healthcare consumers, in the context of a project to generate English summaries of medical data about babies in a neonatal intensive care unit. Working directly with consumers was in many ways more challenging than working with medical professionals, but it did lead to valuable insights which benefited our projects. We hope that the discussion of our experiences will help other researchers who wish to conduct KA with healthcare consumers.
