Now this sci fi has made a major step forward into becoming reality. New research from New York has shown that robots have finally become self aware. These findings were disclosed in the latest edition of New Scientist. Researchers from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York created three robots that were tested using the'wise men puzzle', a puzzle designed to discover self awareness.
S Korea, US Work on Advanced Artificial Intelligence Against Cyber Threats / Sputnik International
Seoul and Washington have agreed to join efforts to develop an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to counter cyberspace threats, according to a joint statement quoted by the local media on Monday. The two countries "intend to explore areas of mutual value and benefit, which may lead to joint activities aimed at enhancing operational readiness to support cybersecurity, and resilience," the statement issued by the US Department of Homeland Security and the South Korean Ministry of Science reads as quoted by Yonhap news agency. The South Korean ministry told the media that the sides had agreed to cooperate on joint research on "AI-based cybersecurity" following the recent visit to the country of Reginald Brothers, the US under secretary for science and technology. Last month, South Korean media reported that North Korea had allegedly carried out a number of cyberattacks and stolen information from dozens of Seoul top government officials' smartphones.

David Siegel, co-founder of 35 billion quantitative hedge fund firm Two Sigma, says he's "very worried" that machines could soon cost large swaths of the workforce their jobs. "They are doing routine work and tasks and it's precisely these tasks that computers are going to be better at doing," just as combustion engines replaced horses or ATMs replaced most bank tellers. They demonstrated their technique, a type of reinforcement learning, by having a robot complete various tasks -- putting a clothes hanger on a rack, assembling a toy plane, screwing a cap on a water bottle, and more -- without pre-programmed details about its surroundings. "What we're reporting on here is a new approach to empowering a robot to learn," said Professor Pieter Abbeel of UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. "The key is that when a robot is faced with something new, we won't have to reprogram it. The exact same software, which encodes how the robot can learn, was used to allow the robot to learn all the different tasks we gave it."
