We've been researching the latest developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring you our opinion on consumer adoption of AI. In the news recently, we've noticed that the makers of Apple's iconic digital assistant, Siri, Dag Kittlaus and Adam Cheyer, have released a new AI platform, Viv. The key difference between their "next generation" tool and other AI platforms is that it isn't constrained by service provider, i.e. Being cross channel, it can "speak" in a device agnostic manner to vendors and third party suppliers in order to provide the most relevant information based on the request, i.e. to purchase relevant goods at the cheapest price.


What jobs will flying robots be doing in future?

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator franchise painted a dystopian picture of the robotic future In the James Cameron blockbuster The Terminator and its follow up sequels, the world was ruled by machines. Flying robots patrolled the skies even as land-based vehicles with minds of their own trundled along on the ground below. But thankfully, instead of trying to wipe out humanity, these drones may possibly soon be an indispensable component of our lives: building skyscrapers using 3D printing technology; transporting cargo across town; crop spraying; or helping find people trapped in buildings. Lockheed Martin's K-Max is a full size, unmanned helicopter, capable of both autonomous and remote-controlled operations. Previously deployed in combat zones, it is now increasingly being used for civilian applications, from fire fighting, to heavy lifting and oil drilling.


Mitsubishi Electric develops 'compact AI' - Nikkei Asian Review

Mitsubishi Electric has developed what may be a crucial next step in the development of artificial intelligence systems. Its "compact AI" technology eliminates the need for large servers and can be embedded in a far wider scope of devices and machines than existing AI systems can. The company says that, by filtering information necessary for analysis, the new technology can drastically reduce the processes involved in computation for AI systems. The development can trim the computation needed for certain tasks by as much as 90%, according to Mitsubishi Electric. It plans to start offering applications for compact AI technology, such as autonomous driving systems and smarter industrial robots and machine tools, as early as 2017, a company source said.


World's first robot lawyer, 'ROSS', hired by US firm

The world's first artificial intelligence lawyer has been employed by a law firm in the US, which will use the robot to assist its various teams in legal research. The robot called'ROSS' is built upon Watson, IBM's cognitive computer. With the support of Watson's cognitive computing and natural language processing capabilities, lawyers can ask ROSS their research question and the robot reads through the law, gathers evidence, draws inferences and returns highly relevant, evidence-based answers. ROSS also monitors the law around the clock to notify users of new court decisions that can affect a case. The programme continually learns from the lawyers who use it to bring back better results each time.


Face recognition app taking Russia by storm may bring end to public anonymity

If the founders of a new face recognition app get their way, anonymity in public could soon be a thing of the past. FindFace, launched two months ago and currently taking Russia by storm, allows users to photograph people in a crowd and work out their identities, with 70% reliability. It works by comparing photographs to profile pictures on Vkontakte, a social network popular in Russia and the former Soviet Union, with more than 200 million accounts. In future, the designers imagine a world where people walking past you on the street could find your social network profile by sneaking a photograph of you, and shops, advertisers and the police could pick your face out of crowds and track you down via social networks. In the short time since the launch, Findface has amassed 500,000 users and processed nearly 3m searches, according to its founders, 26-year-old Artem Kukharenko, and 29-year-old Alexander Kabakov.

Industrial revolutions are momentous events. By most reckonings, there have been only three. The first was triggered in the 1700s by the commercial steam engine and the mechanical loom. The harnessing of electricity and mass production sparked the second, around the start of the 20th century. The computer set the third in motion after World War II (see "The Man Who Made the Computer Age Possible," by Jeffrey E. Garten). It might seem too soon to proclaim that the fourth industrial revolution, spurred by interconnected digital technology, has begun. But Henning Kagermann, the head of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech), did exactly that in 2011, when he used the term Industrie 4.0 to describe a proposed government-sponsored industrial initiative. When you look closely at the rapid pace of digitization in industry today, the name doesn't seem hyperbolic at all. It is a signal of sweeping change that is rapidly transforming many companies and may catch others by surprise.

The digital apocalypse: how the games industry is rising again

For 30 years the games industry worked in a certain way. People rented offices and set up studios to create games; they employed staff to work in-house, then got those projects funded and distributed by publishers. If you wanted to opt out of that setup, you worked alone, or in a small team, as an indie developer โ€“ you operated in a totally separate stratosphere; the system neatly self-segregated. Meanwhile, in the background, the business worked to the seven-year cycles dictated by the lifespan of the major consoles. It was a machine of discreet components. But that machine is rusting and falling apart.

Frank Pasquale, professor of law at the University of Maryland, reflects on the roles of machines and machine learning in today's society, and to what extent'opaque' algorithmic systems should be subject to human oversight. The theme of "technics out of control" animated several other mid-20th-century films. Common themes emerged, variations on the Frankenstein or "sorcerer's apprentice" myths. For example, in Colossus: The Forbin Project, a machine assures perpetual peace, but appears capable of controlling much more than nuclear arsenals. It sternly warns one of its creators that "freedom is just an illusion" and "In time you will come to regard me not only with respect and awe, but with love."


ChatBots & Artificial Intelligence: is the channel ready?

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first Dartmouth Conference, the research project that is credited with introducing'Artificial Intelligence' (AI) as we understand it today to the world. AI often seems like the stuff of science-fiction, but it did hit the headlines recently when Facebook announced it will use ChatBots to help businesses deliver automated customer support, online shopping guidance, and more'interactive' engagement. Facebook seems to have got its timing right, at least in the consumer market. This technology appears to growing in acceptance amongst the general public, who probably don't even really think of ChatBots as a form of AI. Perhaps because they're getting used to'personal assistants' like Apple's Siri.
