Honda to set up AI research base in Tokyo

Honda Motor Co. said Thursday that subsidiary Honda R&D Co. plans to establish a research and development base specializing in artificial intelligence in the Akasaka district of Tokyo in September. The major automaker will consolidate almost all of its AI-related R&D activities in the nation into the new base, called Honda R&D Innovation Lab Tokyo.

Jeff Bezos spoke this week at Recode's Code Conference in California about the "gigantic" potential of artificial intelligence. Pressed by moderator Walt Mossberg to speculate on where this technology is headed and what it means, Bezos went so far as to say that we may be on the "edge of a golden era". Were it not real life I'd have sworn I was watching the opening scene of a sci-fi horror film, complete with scary technology (AI), calming platitudes ("humans are much more efficient") and sinister villain (guess who). Contrary to the titillating trailer, however, I think the future of artificial intelligence, at least as far as supply chain strategists are concerned, is bright, and that Bezos is our friend. Amazon reportedly employs 1,000 people in artificial intelligence.


Bounds for Vector-Valued Function Estimation

We present a framework to derive risk bounds for vector-valued learning with a broad class of feature maps and loss functions. Multi-task learning and one-vs-all multi-category learning are treated as examples. We discuss in detail vector-valued functions with one hidden layer, and demonstrate that the conditions under which shared representations are beneficial for multi- task learning are equally applicable to multi-category learning.


Relaxation of the EM Algorithm via Quantum Annealing

The EM algorithm is a novel numerical method to obtain maximum likelihood estimates and is often used for practical calculations. However, many of maximum likelihood estimation problems are nonconvex, and it is known that the EM algorithm fails to give the optimal estimate by being trapped by local optima. In order to deal with this difficulty, we propose a deterministic quantum annealing EM algorithm by introducing the mathematical mechanism of quantum fluctuations into the conventional EM algorithm because quantum fluctuations induce the tunnel effect and are expected to relax the difficulty of nonconvex optimization problems in the maximum likelihood estimation problems. We show a theorem that guarantees its convergence and give numerical experiments to verify its efficiency.

Google AI just wrote its first song Chart Attack

This isn't the first piece of music composed by a computer. But it's a moment that might one day be called "watershed." It might also be called "the beginning of the end." Google unveiled its Magenta program at Moogfest. The program, part of the deep learning Google Brain project, will use Google's open-source artificial intelligence platform TensorFlow to research machine learning in artistic creation, i.e. have a machine write a song.


Google turns to University of Oxford to create DeepMind 'Off' switch

Google has teamed up with scientists at the University of Oxford to ensure that its AI, DeepMind, won't be able to overpower human control by creating, what is essentially, an off switch. Revealed in a peer-reviewed paper titled'Safely Interruptible Agents', the framework allows a human operator to safely interrupt an AI without the AI learning how to prevent or induce interruptions. "If such an agent (AI) is operating in real-time under human supervision, now and then it may be necessary for a human operator to press the big red button to prevent the agony from continuing a harmful sequence of actions - harmful either for the agent or for the environment - and lead the agent to into a safer situation." Speaking to Business Insider, Google DeepMind scientist and one of the paper's writers, Laurent Orseau, explained: "If the agent expects a reward but can predict it's going to be shut down. It will try to resist so as to get its reward.

Once almost all tasks are outsourced to super-intelligence, humans may gradually lose the abilities that once defined Homo sapiens' smarts. In fact, some say the world is in the midst of the singularity already: Humans have already relinquished their ability to navigate, memorize and calculate, said Joan Slonczewski, a microbiologist at Kenyon College in Ohio. Scientists have even developed empathetic robots to do some of the most human tasks -- caring for the sick and elderly. In the end humans may become like mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of the cells. Though mitochondria were once independent organisms, primitive bacteria engulfed mitochondria long ago, and they gradually outsourced all their functions but making energy.

Magic the Gathering is a complex, nerdtastic phenomenon; it's part Lord of the Rings, part chess. In simpler, better times, when I was just a wide-eyed kid with a black deck, the fantasy card game was fairly simple, and mostly casual--not yet the 250 million-a-year industry it is today. In 2015, the game is both big business and a full-blown subculture, home to a huge community of casual players, a competitive pro circuit, and now, its very own artificial intelligence--one that generates thousands of brand new cards by mining the data of the old. Reed Morgan Milewicz, a programmer and computer science researcher, may be the first person to teach an AI to do Magic, literally. Milewicz wowed a popular online MTG forum--as well as hacker forums like Y Combinator's Hacker News and Reddit--when he posted the results of an experiment to "teach" a weak AI to auto-generate Magic cards.
