With artificial intelligence crossing milestones in its capability to learn rapidly from its environment and beat humans at tasks and games from Jeopardy to the ancient Chinese game Go, Alphabet's Google is taking proactive steps to ensure that the technology it is creating does not one day turn against humans. Google's AI research lab in London, DeepMind, teamed up with Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute to explore ways to prevent an AI agent from going rogue. In their joint-study, "Safely Interruptible Agents," the DeepMind-Future of Humanity team proposed a framework to allow humans to repeatedly and safely interrupt an AI agent's reinforcement learning. But, more importantly, this can be done while simultaneously blocking an AI agent's ability to learn how to prevent a human operator from turning off its machine-learning capabilities or reinforcement learning. It's not a stretch to think AI agents can learn how to outthink humans. Earlier this year, Google's AI agent AlphaGo beat world champion Lee Sedol in Go, the ancient Chinese game of strategy.

June 05--Tucson-based video game development studio Desert Owl Games continues to grow, with the launch of a "Huntsman" movie tie-in game, the 10-year anniversary of its biggest title and upcoming work with Sony. The studio, which was born after Sony Online Entertainment closed its Tucson operations in 2011, traces its roots back to Octopi, the game developer Sony bought in 2009 and turned into SOE Tucson. Desert Owl Games has 15 people on staff, with another 15 to 20 artists employed on a contract basis, and actively develops what was Octopi's flagship game, "PoxNora," which passed from Sony control over to Desert Owl in 2014 and turns 10 this year. Arthur Griffith, one of the game's creators and co-founder of Desert Owl, said a lot has changed in the gaming industry in that time period. When "PoxNora" launched, gaming magazines wouldn't advertise it, he said, because it wasn't available in stores.

For a generation that has been exposed to the Terminator movies, visions of a robot uprising come to mind whenever news about advancements in artificial intelligence surface. Great minds such as Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have previously expressed their concern on the possibility of a robot apocalypse. It would seem that Google, one of the companies at the forefront of artificial intelligence development, is now sharing some of these concerns, as its DeepMind unit has published a study that seeks to implement safety measures on the technology. The paper, published as a collaboration between DeepMind and the Future of Humanity Institute of Oxford University, discusses a "big red button" that will allow humans to turn off artificial intelligence in a robot and take control of it in case the robot is misbehaving or malfunctioning. And just so it is clear, the Future of Humanity Institute is named as such as it wants humanity to have a future, with Nick Bostrom, its founding director, being one of the more vocal opponents of artificial intelligence. The researchers of the paper, DeepMind's Laurent Orseau and the Future of Humanity Institute's Stuart Armstrong, explain that artificial intelligence agents are not likely to be at their best behavior at all times.

The movie follows the story of John Connor who is sent back in time to stop Skynet, the world's first super computer with a mind of its own that later conquers the world waging a war to terminate humans from the surface of the earth. AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been the center of debate for several years now with some of the greatest minds of our time like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking warning tech enthusiast to consider the possibility.

These days, I feel as lucky as an EPA official emerging unscathed from a road trip through Logan County in a car plastered with "Hillary" stickers simply to continue having a job as a newspaper reporter. There are not a lot of employment opportunities for the 21st Century's equivalent of the town crier, especially if, like me, you are old, technology challenged and live in a state with an economy that's escaped do-not-resuscitate orders only because its Legislature can't agree on the wording. While Career Cast's 2016 Jobs Rated Report listed newspaper reporter as the worst job in America for the third consecutive year, thanks mainly to a -9 percent projected growth rate, high on-the-job stress and low pay, I still enjoy coming to work. It's a job that's rarely boring, always challenging, and puts me in contact with a cast of characters in an array of settings I would never encounter had I pursued the only other marketable skill I developed during my life -- hay baling. I'm also lucky to be working for a company that still considers its main purpose to be publishing a newspaper, albeit one with video, interactive and online components, and not, as the company formerly known as Tribune Publishing described itself in a press release last week, a "content curation and monetization company focused on creating and distributing premium, verified content across all channels."

And then a machine lifts your car off the ground, moving all three tons of it into a kind of aerial parking bay. Built by a German company called Serva Transport, the system saves you time. It saves garage space, thanks to those carefully arranged parking spots.

Switzerland is voting on whether to introduce a guaranteed basic income for every citizen, becoming the first country to hold such a vote. The proposal calls for adults to be paid an unconditional income of 2,500 Swiss francs ( 1,755; 2,555) a month, whether they work or not. Supporters of the idea say 21st Century work is increasingly automated, with fewer jobs available for workers. But polls suggest that only about one quarter of Swiss voters back the idea. Under the terms of the basic income, workers who already earn more than SFr2,500 Swiss francs would not get any additional money.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder and CEO, stated in a USA Today article (6/1/2016) that "The emergence of artificial intelligence and machine learning in household gadgets is gigantic". Bezos is speaking from firsthand experience as Amazon's Echo and Alexa, the company's digital assistant, have become a surprise hit since being released a year or so ago. Alexa lives in the cloud and is powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. 'She' learns from every interaction with you, understanding over time that your favorite brand of cookies are Oreos so when you say'Alexa, please put cookies on the shopping list' she knows you mean Oreos.

Startups applying machine learning algorithms to advertising, sales, and marketing were highlighted this quarter by Oracle's acquisition of Tel Aviv-based cross-device advertising startup Crosswise for 50M. In fact, since January 2015, there have been 10 acquisitions in the space: Twitter acquired TellApart for more than 530M, Google acquired marketing-management startup Granata Decision Systems, and Israeli unicorn IronSource merged with in-app advertising startup Supersonic, to name a few. Just this year, private companies like Drawbridge, Persado, Lead Wizards, Kunlun AI, Mariana and Captiv8 raised equity funding rounds from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sequoia Capital, and Goldman Sachs for AI-powered marketing and advertising solutions.
