The AI air traffic control that could eliminate wasted time on the tarmac for travellers
Nasa has launched a new program that could one day eliminate traffic at the world's busiest airports. The agency plans to create a more efficient method of information sharing, moving away from two-way radio communication toward a computer-based system that connects everybody involved in arrivals and departures. This effort aims to more precisely coordinate an airplane's movements, and over the next five years, Nasa and the Federal Aviation Administration will conduct research and field tests to facilitate the transition. Nasa's Next Generation Air Transportation System plans to use computers to streamline information between air traffic controllers, managers, and flight crews. This would connect everybody involved in arrivals and departures, allowing for more precise coordination of the plane's movement.

Preparing mate involves pouring hot water over mate leaves packed into a cup and letting them steep. Generally, things tend to flow downstream, yet he found a few mate leaves inexplicably ended up back in the kettle. Somehow, they had traveled upstream.
A Silicon Valley Startup Is Building Pizza-Making Robots
A Silicon Valley startup is trying to disrupt the made-to-order pizza industry -- an industry I really didn't think needed disrupting -- with pizza-making robots. You can go watch the robots in action over at Bloomberg. The pizzeria, Zume Pizza, was founded by one-time Zynga president Alex Garden (the maker of Farmville), who tells Bloomberg that he hopes the company becomes the Amazon of food. The pizza starts with a human chef who rolls out the raw dough and puts it on a conveyor belt. Marta, robot number one, spurts tomato sauce onto the disk and smears it around with what looks like a miniature floor buffer attached to a matrix of metal tubes.
Deep learning enables software to recognise unseen events in YouTube videos – Tech2
Using deep learning techniques, a group of researchers has trained a computer to recognise events in videos on YouTube -- even the ones the software has never seen before like riding a horse, baking cookies or eating at a restaurant. Researchers from Disney Research and Shanghai's Fudan University used both scene and object features from the video and enabled link between these visual elements and each type of event to be automatically determined by a machine-learning architecture known as neural network. "Notably, this approach not only works better than other methods in recognising events in videos, but is significantly better at identifying events that the computer programme has never or rarely encountered previously," said Leonid Sigal, senior research scientist at Disney Research. Automated techniques are essential for indexing, searching and analysing the incredible amount of video being created and uploaded daily to the Internet. "With multiple hours of video being uploaded to YouTube every second, there is no way to describe all of that content manually. If we don't know what's in all those videos, we can't find things we need and much of the videos' potential value is lost," noted Jessica Hodgins, vice president at Disney Research.

But matching local pet owners with appropriate sitters is a surprisingly complex big data challenge, which is where the developers and data scientists that create and test Rover.com's Founded in 2011 by Greg Gottesman (Founder and Board Member) and Philip Kimmey (Co-Founder and Director of Software Development), "Rover.com is a dog lover's other best friend -- second only, of course, to your dog," says the website. When his nine-year-old daughter said she would have actually paid to take care of someone else's dog, Gottesman saw a business. He and his team, including Phillip Kimmey, pitched the idea for Rover.com at the 2011 Startup Weekend in Seattle and won top prize.

In this post, I want share the experiences of UK Technical Evangelist and ML Expert Amy Nicholson. Amy will share her experience of using the Cortana Intelligence Gallery in conjunction with the Azure ML Studio, and how that combination helped her break down the otherwise high barriers into popular ML techniques and start building her own ML models as well as her knowledge about this space. 'Top Gun' AI outguns veteran pilot in combat simulator
A recently-developed AI program dubbed ALPHA is being described as the most aggressive and responsive flight simulator to-date, having outwitted a veteran fighter pilot with thousands of hours of flight experience. Since the 1980s, a fighter pilot's first experience of flying a plane has typically been in the confines of a computer combat simulator that would teach them the hazards of in-flight combat without fears of any causalities. In 2016, this method remains ever-present and more important than ever, with programmers and researchers regularly updating a simulator's AI to help it prove more of a challenge to skilled human pilots. Now it seems those pilots have finally met their match. A University of Cincinnati (UC) graduate, Nick Ernest, has developed his own AI – dubbed ALPHA – as part of his own start-up, Psibernetix, with aims of making it a research tool for crewed and uncrewed teaming in a simulation environment. Having wiped the floor with other AIs earlier last year, a newer version of ALPHA has been pitted against retired United States Air Force Colonel Gene Lee, who has been besting combat simulator AIs since the 1980s.
