DARPA Wants A.I. to Control All Our Wireless Communication

#artificialintelligence

The radio frequency spectrum enables almost every wireless transmission, from Pokémon Go location data to phone calls and military radio transmissions. The problem is that spectrum is starting to get crowded. With more and more devices connecting to the Internet of Things, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is concerned "wireless congestion" could not only impact social media posts and Netflix stream, but also critical communications in war zones. The answer, as it so often is these days, is a highly sophisticated Artificial Intelligence. DARPA recently announced its next Grand Challenge contest, which will pit several teams against one another in a three-year competition to design a computer system that can micromanage the radio frequency spectrum to keep devices working smoothly.

Google launches new cloud service for understanding human language

#artificialintelligence

Google's intelligent cloud developer tools are expanding with the launch of a new Cloud Natural Language API on Wednesday. The service is aimed at helping developers create applications that understand human language. It's an important move for Google, as public cloud providers are racing to host new applications built with intelligent capabilities. Natural language processing allows developers to build apps that can tackle the challenging task of understanding how humans communicate, and it is key for things like building intelligent assistants and chat bots. This API can provide a bunch of information about a block of text back to an application, including the overall sentiment of a passage and an analysis of the structure of a sentence.

Minecraft Is a Testing Ground for Human-AI Collaboration

MIT Technology Review

The blockish and slightly dorky computer game Minecraft may turn out to be a great place for humans and AI to learn how to work together. An experimental new version of the game, released by Microsoft researchers this month, can be used to train an AI to perform all sorts of tasks, from crossing bridges to building complex objects. The new platform, called Project Malmo, makes it possible for a learning algorithm to control a Minecraft character that's normally operated by a human player. But it also provides ways for human players and AI agents to work together, and a chat window through which a person can talk with a nascent AI. "In the long run I want to work toward AI that can be taught by any user to help them achieve their goals," says Katja Hoffman, a researcher at Microsoft Cambridge in the U.K. who leads the project. Hoffman, who gave a demo of the software to AI researchers at an academic conference in New York last week, says that human-AI collaboration is a key goal for the project: "We've built in all the capabilities that a researcher would need in order to work toward collaborative AI." Malmo is geared toward testing reinforcement-learning algorithms, a way of training a computer to perform a task by providing simulated rewards.

Elon Musk's Tesla 'Master Plan' Involves Trucks, Buses and a Compact SUV

TIME - Tech

Electric car maker Tesla Motors is working on multiple new vehicles, including heavy trucks and buses that could be unveiled as early as next year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company also plans a compact SUV and "a new kind of pickup truck" to complement its existing fleet. Tesla currently makes a luxury sedan, the Model S, and a luxury crossover, the Model X. It plans to release a lower-priced car, the Model 3, next year. Musk discussed the products in his much-anticipated "master plan" for the company, which was posted on Tesla's website Wednesday night.

BroadBand Nation: What Is The Internet Of Things?

#artificialintelligence

Your next refrigerator may know more about diet than your doctor. How many objects do you have that are connected to the Internet? About a decade ago you probably would have said one or maybe two if you were an early adopter of smartphone technology. But today, oh, well I've got a work computer, I've got a personal computer, I've got a tablet, I've got a smartphone, I've got a video game console, I've got a media player, I've got a smart TV, I even have a smart refrigerator. Now extend this trend outward and what do we get?

Deep Learning Applications to Drive Global Microserver Industry

#artificialintelligence

Microservers are a system-on-chip device featuring multiple single-socket servers sharing cooling fans, power supply, chassis, and other such hardware. This common platform allows microprocessors to achieve much higher power efficiency than conventional servers, since more tasks can be carried out on the same volume of power. Microservers were developed in order to integrate server motherboard tasks on to an easily portable and power-efficient unit. This eliminates the need for support chips complementing the server function, which has resulted in the power efficient and space-saving design of microservers. According to Transparency Market Research, the global microservers market was valued at more than US 1 bn in 2012. Due to the rapidly increasing adoption of microservers in diverse industries, the market is expected to exhibit a stellar 43.4% CAGR from 2013 to 2019, with the market's valuation expected to rise to US 30.2 bn over the period.

Elon Musk: Tesla expanding into pickups, heavy trucks

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaks at the Model X launch event in Fremont, Calif. SAN FRANCISCO – Watch out, fellow automakers: Elon Musk announced Wednesday evening that Tesla Motors, known for pricey electric sedans, hopes to expand into small SUVs, a pickup and even heavy-duty semis and buses in a bid to revolutionize transportation as we know it. That bombshell was just part of Musk's long-touted Tesla master plan, a follow-up to one issued when the company was just starting out, outlining a strategy that pivots the company from a builder of niche automobiles to a producer of a broad range of passenger and commercial vehicles that eschew fossil fuel. Also noted in the plan, which Musk published on the company's website, is the company's more well-known pursuit of the consumer solar business through its planned acquisition of SolarCity. Tesla will "create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage, expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments, develop a self-driving capability that is 10 (times) safer than manual via massive fleet learning, (and) enable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it," reads Musk's "Master Plan, Part Deux."

Improving Attribution & Malware Identification With Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

One of the cybersecurity promises of machine learning (particularly "deep learning") is that it can accurately identify malware nobody has ever seen before because of what it's learned about malware it's seen in the past. Konstantin Berlin, senior research engineer at Invincea Labs, is trying to take the techology further, so that organizations can get more information about unfamiliar code than simply "it's benign" or "it's malicious." Berlin, who will be presenting his work next month at Black Hat, says security pros also want to know more about the malware family so they can plan their mitigation strategy accordingly. His technique, he says will do that, as well as improve malware triage and attribution by using new methods of recognizing similarities between malware samples. This can all be done in a customized way that enables each organization to choose what features and factors interest them most.

The landscape of the future is knee-deep in new innovations that were once only mere fantasy. Reality and intelligence are changing and we are already starting to experience this terrain blossom into view. Let's talk about the Pokémon in the room. In the last 2 weeks since it debuted in the US, Pokémon GO has taken the streets by storm. For a "free" app it is estimated to make about 1.6 million a day thanks to the option for in-app purchases.

Machine Learning, Deep Learning 101

#artificialintelligence

Raw data in its unprocessed state does not offer much value, but with the right analytics techniques can offer rich insights that can aid various aspects of life such as making business decisions, political campaigns, and advancing medical science. As shown in Figure 1, the analytics cycle can be broadly classified into four categories or phases: descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive. Machine Learning is an approach to data analysis that automates analytical model building and is used in all four types of analytics. The relevance and the growing use of analytics using machine learning can be demonstrated by its widespread use in the 2016 US presidential election campaign. Unprecedented growth in the availability of useful information coupled with advancements in technology are making it attractive to use analytics to build and run a better campaign.
