Working at Black Duck Software affords me a unique perspective on the ways container technologies and open source software continue to radically alter the application security landscape. But it's at conferences and tradeshows where I the most feel part of the wider software development community. While at work (particularly working with OpenHub), I can see and analyze new trends in software development; at these conferences, I experience those shifting tides. Recently I attended RailsConf in Kansas City, Missouri and OSCON in Austin, Texas. I came away from these conferences with a few key insights into how software development has changed since I began working in the field oh-so-long ago.

Researchers from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have created a rewritable data-storage device capable of storing information at the level of single atoms representing single bits of information. The technology, which is described in the current issue of Nature Nanotechnology, is capable of packing data as dense as 500 terabytes per square inch. Theoretically, the device could store the entire contents of the US Library of Congress within a 0.1-mm-wide cube--though the proof-of-concept demonstrated by the group topped out at 1 kilobyte. On Tuesday, DigitalGlobe, a satellite-imagery company, announced that it will provide high-resolution pictures of the planet's surface to Uber. DigitalGlobe is the primary provider of satellite imagery to Google, Apple, and the U.S. government.

The research firm has divided the top tech trends in business into several categories and we dove down into a few them to pull out some of the best ones for investors. They include: driverless cars, artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality. IHS Automotive estimates that 10% of all light vehicles sold by 2035 will by fully autonomous (as in, they can drive themselves around everywhere). The group also anticipates that driverless cars will become ubiquitous some time after 2050.

As artificial intelligence (AI) makes deeper inroads to improve our daily life, a group of Land Rover engineers have helped the British Land Rover BAR team by building a faster boat so that they could win the sailing competition America's Cup. Using AI, the engineers worked for more than a year to find patterns in the boat's performance data which could be used to make it go faster, the company said in a statement on Thursday. Land Rover BAR is second in America's Cup World Series rankings, following a podium finish in Chicago in the US recently. The next leg is in the island city of Portsmouth from July 21-24 when the team will try to close the 10-point gap to series leader Emirates Team New Zealand. "Land Rover's AI could prove the difference in its bid to win the America's Cup for the first time for Britain," said Sir Ben Ainslie, Land Rover BAR Team's principal and skipper.

Though Google is pushing hard on cloud, competition is fierce, with AWS and Microsoft showing strong growth in the space this year. But the company has renewed its cloud business efforts this year, led by Diane Greene, Google's head of cloud computing. Greene has argued that Google's cloud platform is ready to compete with cloud industry leaders. Amazon, Microsoft and IBM all also offer machine-learning programs with their cloud services, but Google is publicizing how companies can rent its computer servers for AI initiatives to help it stand out among the competition. The new tools Google introduced, for example, makes it so "digital marketers can analyze online product reviews or service centers can determine sentiment from transcribed customer calls," according to a company blog.

In his apartment on March 17, 1970, Shel Dorf displays some posters to be shown at a convention in the U.S. Grant Hotel. The first gathering -- called San Diego's Golden State Comic-Minicon -- was put together by a group of comics, movie and science fiction fans including Shel Dorf, Ken Krueger and Richard Alf. This one-day convention was staged to raise funds and interests for a larger convention. Author Ray Bradbury bought a few items from the dealers at the San Diego Golden State Comics Convention in the U.S. Grant Hotel on Aug. 1, 1970. "I got a few issues of Mad magazine," he said. Called San Diego's Golden State Comic-Con, this was the first full-fledged convention in San Diego with a focus on comic art, film and science fiction. The event included 25 booths and three speakers: comic artist Jack Kirby and authors Ray Bradbury and A.E. van Vogt. A man who murdered a single mother he met on a dating website has been jailed for life. Miles Donnelly admitted strangling Usha Patel, 44, at the home she shared with her five-year-old son in Cricklewood, north-west London in October 2015. The 35-year-old, from Paddington, then fled to a west London house where he attacked another woman when she refused his advances. At the Old Bailey he was told he would serve a minimum of 23 years. The court heard he and Ms Patel had met on the dating site seven months before she invited him back to her home on 7 October.
