GM's self-driving car added to The Henry Ford museum collection
One of General Motors' first self-driving test vehicles is going on display at an automotive history museum in suburban Detroit. The Henry Ford history attraction announced Tuesday that it has acquired a modified pre-production Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle. The GM-donated vehicle originally made its debut testing on the streets of San Francisco in 2016. Now it will be displayed at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn. The camera- and sensor-equipped vehicle is the first autonomous car to be added to The Henry Ford collection.

Alzheimer's disease is a terminal neurodegenerative disease that has historically been diagnosed based on observing significant memory loss. There is currently no cure or disease-modifying therapy for this terminal illness, despite hundreds of clinical trials. It is thought these trials may have a high failure rate because the people enrolled are in the latest stages of the disease, likely already suffering a level of brain tissue loss that cannot easily be repaired. Thus, researchers have put their mind to how to detect this disease earlier, while a chance may still exist to slow its progression. Recent research has shown a biological marker associated with the disease, a peptide called amyloid-beta, changes decades before any memory-related issues are apparent.
Driverless cars risk being racist, new research suggests
A new study that found self-driving cars could be more likely to crash into pedestrians with dark skin has raised concerns among experts in the UAE. Academics said the research could indicate Gulf nationals would be more at risk from being hit by autonomous vehicles, without improvements to software. A recent paper, published by the Georgia Institute of Technology, found detection systems were better at recognising lighter skin tones than dark. The intriguing issue has also raised questions over whether traditional dress, such as the black abaya or white kandura, may also confuse existing technology. "I would exercise some caution until the study is peer-reviewed but it could have significant implications," said Lakmal Seneviratne, Professor of Robotics at Khalifa University.

KARACHI: Pakistan has introduced the first-ever business robot journalist, Dante, who writes and publishes a comprehensive report on stocks traded at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) within a few seconds after the market's closure. "The Pakistan Stock Exchange is closed at 3:30pm (from Monday to Thursday and at 4:30pm on Friday) and it gets the daily report published before it is 3:31pm," said the award-winning tech startup, baseH Technologies, Founder and CEO Anisuddin Sheikh. TheRoboJournalist, also called Dante, had been writing the reports for the past few days, he said at a signing ceremony to get seed money from the Elahi Group of Companies for the project at the National Incubation Centre (NIC) at NED University on Saturday. Simultaneously, the artificial intelligence (AI)-based content writing software develops a video on share trading and gets it uploaded at YouTube, Sheikh said. The robot journalist is capable of doing sports and weather reporting as well.

CHIBA - With the market for business-use unmanned aircraft looking promising in coming years, a large-scale drone expo that kicked off Wednesday showed more companies are eager to get involved with the trend. Companies ranging from the small to the powerful are showing off their business solutions using drones at Japan Drone, an annual exhibition at Makuhari Messe in Chiba that features more than 200 firms and runs until Friday. Telecom giant KDDI Corp. is showcasing its "smart" drone platform connected to KDDI's mobile communication networks across the country, which allows a drone to navigate a wider swath of territory via remote control. "One merit of using our service is that drones can be remote controlled through our communication networks anywhere in Japan, unlike most drones exhibited at this event, which tap Wi-Fi networks with limited coverage," said So Yamazaki, a KDDI official. KDDI will launch the service to corporate customers in June and lists surveillance, inspection, land survey and analysis as the envisioned applications.

Google's Lookout app says what it sees for blind users in the US
Google's Lookout is now finally available for download, though it's only compatible with Pixel devices in the US set to English at the moment. The application was first announced at Google's annual I/O Conference in 2018 and was designed to help the blind and visually impaired navigate their surroundings. It comes with three modes: Explore, Shopping and Quick Read. Explore, its default mode, gives users audio cues about their environment, telling them if there's a chair or a cute dog blocking the way, for instance. Shopping can read barcodes and currency, giving users a way to, say, make sure they're truly holding a $5 bill.

The unmanageable volume and complexity of the big data that the world is now swimming in have increased the potential of machine learning--and the need for it. In 2007 Fei-Fei Li, the head of Stanford's Artificial Intelligence Lab, gave up trying to program computers to recognize objects and began labeling the millions of raw images that a child might encounter by age three and feeding them to computers.
