iPhone 11: Image appears to show new phone with strange camera design on the back
New pictures could show the inside of the new iPhone – and seem to boost the idea it will have a very complicated camera set up. Apple is said to be readying a whole host of phones for release in September. And one is one of the strangest rumours to surround the iPhone: that it could have at least three lenses in its camera, though it is still not entirely clear what for. New schematics seem to show that new phone, with all of its three lenses. It chimes with previous rumours about that set-up, which have come from leaks from inside Apple's supply chain. We'll tell you what's true.
Lenovo Smart Tab review: A hybrid smart display that lives up to the hype
Tablets often go unused, and when you do want to play with it, it's probably dead because you forgot to charge it. At least, that's what happens to me. Lenovo, however, has come up with a potential solution to the neglected tablet dilemma: the Smart Tab. It was a finalist for Best of CES this year in the smart home category, and here's why: You can place it inside a companion Bluetooth speaker dock, at which point it becomes an Alexa-powered smart display similar to Amazon's Echo Show. This way, when the Smart Tab is not being used as a tablet, it still has a purpose as a smart display.

NASA is sending a small helicopter to Mars in 2020, and it managed to get airborne in a simulated Martian atmosphere without crashing or exploding. I really want to get excited about this thing, and from a technology perspective, I am.
A new study shows what it might take to make AI useful in health care
Hospital intensive care units can be frightening places for patients. In the US, the ICU has a higher mortality rate than any other hospital unit--between 8% and 19%, totaling roughly 500,000 deaths a year. Those who do not die may suffer in other ways, such as long-term physical and mental impairment. For nurses, working in one can easily lead to burnout because it takes so much physical and emotional stamina to administer round-the-clock care. Now a new paper, published in Nature Digital Medicine, shows how AI might be able to help.

Artificial Intelligence: Industry Report and Investment Case
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the augmentation and imitation of human activity and behavior to increase output or efficiency. Driven in large by technological advancements and an increase in implementation and demand, this burgeoning field has gained a lot of attention in the last few years. However, its underlying sciences have been in development for decades. By the 1950's, a generation of scientists discussed the concept of an artificial brain. In 1956, John McCarthy coined the term AI when he, along with other researchers, claimed in their proposal for the Dartmouth Research Project on AI that "every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it".
AI Weekly: Will Amazon's cosponsored NSF solicitation help or warp AI research?
This week, in what might have been construed as a gesture of goodwill, Amazon announced that it would partner with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to commit up to $10 million in research grants over the next three years to develop systems focused on "fairness in AI." But the intervening days brought debate rather than praise as researchers questioned the Seattle company's true motives -- and its methods. They quickly pointed out that Amazon would only contribute a part of the $7.6 million in total rewards, and that this portion might be provided via an "agreement" or "contract." And they noted that, before Amazon signs on the dotted line, it'll be afforded a chance to review the budget and to negotiate terms, and to provide access to Amazon researchers who would act as project advisors. But Amazon doesn't have a sterling reputation when it comes to AI fairness.
UK, US and Russia among those opposing killer robot ban
The UK government is among a group of countries that are attempting to thwart plans to formulate and impose a pre-emptive ban on killer robots. Delegates have been meeting at the UN in Geneva all week to discuss potential restrictions under international law to so-called lethal autonomous weapons systems, which use artificial intelligence to help decide when and who to kill. Most states taking part – and particularly those from the global south – support either a total ban or strict legal regulation governing their development and deployment, a position backed by the UN secretary general, António Guterres, who has described machines empowered to kill as "morally repugnant". But the UK is among a group of states – including Australia, Israel, Russia and the US – speaking forcefully against legal regulation. As discussions operate on a consensus basis, their objections are preventing any progress on regulation.
Boston Dynamics' newest robot is a massive birdlike machine that works in a warehouse
In its quest to develop functional -- and sometimes terrifying -- robots, Boston Dynamics has unleashed a veritable petting zoo of futuristic-looking machines. In recent years, the tech company, owned by Japan's SoftBank Group, has released videos showing dog-like robots unloading dishwashers and climbing stairs, galloping Bovidae-like creatures that can run move faster than Usain Bolt, and a mesmerizing humanoid robot that leaves some YouTube viewers convinced that a robot takeover is imminent. In its latest video, the first to surface in about five months, a Boston Dynamics robot has acquired a new form, one that resembles an emu. Despite its large size -- it's six feet tall and weighs 231 pounds -- the wheeled machine glides across a warehouse floor with ease, demonstrating its ability to pick up and move large boxes using what appear to be suction cups at the end of a long neck. It's referred to as "Handle" and, according to the company, was designed to carry up to 33 pounds while maneuvering in tight spaces.
