Extractive Summarization via Weighted Dissimilarity and Importance Aligned Key Iterative Algorithm

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We present importance aligned key iterative algorithm for extractive summarization that is faster than conventional algorithms keeping its accuracy. The computational complexity of our algorithm is O($SNlogN$) to summarize original $N$ sentences into final $S$ sentences. Our algorithm maximizes the weighted dissimilarity defined by the product of importance and cosine dissimilarity so that the summary represents the document and at the same time the sentences of the summary are not similar to each other. The weighted dissimilarity is heuristically maximized by iterative greedy search and binary search to the sentences ordered by importance. We finally show a benchmark score based on summarization of customer reviews of products, which highlights the quality of our algorithm comparable to human and existing algorithms. We provide the source code of our algorithm on github https://github.com/qhapaq-49/imakita .

DeepCABAC: Context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding for deep neural network compression

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

From all different proposed We present DeepCABAC, a novel contextadaptive methods, sparsification followed by weight quantization and binary arithmetic coder for compressing entropy coding arguably belong to the set of most popular deep neural networks. It quantizes each weight parameter approaches, since very high compression ratios can be by minimizing a weighted rate-distortion achieved under such paradigm (Han et al., 2015a; Louizos function, which implicitly takes the impact of et al., 2017; Wiedemann et al., 2018a;b). Whereas much of quantization on to the accuracy of the network research has focused on the sparsification part, a substantially into account. Subsequently, it compresses the less amount have focused on improving the later two quantized values into a bitstream representation steps. In fact, most of the proposed (post-sparsity) compression with minimal redundancies. We show that Deep-algorithms come with at least one of the following CABAC is able to reach very high compression caveats: 1) they decouple the quantization procedure from ratios across a wide set of different network architectures the subsequent lossless compression algorithm, 2) ignore and datasets. For instance, we are correlations between the parameters and 3) apply a lossless able to compress by x63.6 the VGG16 ImageNet compression algorithm that produce a bitstream with more model with no loss of accuracy, thus being able to redundancies than principally needed (e.g.

Vehicle Shape and Color Classification Using Convolutional Neural Network

arXiv.org Machine Learning

This paper presents a module of vehicle reidentification based on make/model and color classification. It could be used by the Automated Vehicular Surveillance (AVS) or by the fast analysis of video data. Many of problems, that are related to this topic, had to be addressed. In order to facilitate and accelerate the progress in this subject, we will present our way to collect and to label a large scale data set. We used deeper neural networks in our training. They showed a good classification accuracy. We show the results of make/model and color classification on controlled and video data set. We demonstrate with the help of a developed application the re-identification of vehicles on video images based on make/model and color classification. This work was partially funded under the grant.

From What to How. An Overview of AI Ethics Tools, Methods and Research to Translate Principles into Practices

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

However, in recent years symbolic AI has been complemented and sometimes replaced by (Deep) Neural Networks and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. This has vastly increased its potential utility and impact on society, with the consequence that the ethical debate has gone mainstream. Such a debate has primarily focused on principles--the'what' of AI ethics (beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, justice and explicability)--rather than on practices, the'how.' Awareness of the potential issues is increasing at a fast rate, but the AI community's ability to take action to mitigate the associated risks is still at its infancy. Therefore, our intention in presenting this research is to contribute to closing the gap between principles and practices by constructing a typology that may help practically-minded developers'apply ethics' at each stage of the pipeline, and to signal to researchers where further work is needed. The focus is exclusively on Machine Learning, but it is hoped that the results of this research may be easily applicable to other branches of AI. The article outlines the research method for creating this typology, the initial findings, and provides a summary of future research needs.

ELIMINATION from Design to Analysis

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Elimination is a word puzzle game for browsers and mobile devices, where all levels are generated by a constrained evolutionary algorithm with no human intervention. This paper describes the design of the game and its level generation methods, and analysis of playtraces from almost a thousand users who played the game since its release. The analysis corroborates that the level generator creates a sawtooth-shaped difficulty curve, as intended. The analysis also offers insights into player behavior in this game.

TSXplain: Demystification of DNN Decisions for Time-Series using Natural Language and Statistical Features

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Neural networks (NN) are considered as black-boxes due to the lack of explainability and transparency of their decisions. This significantly hampers their deployment in environments where explainability is essential along with the accuracy of the system. Recently, significant efforts have been made for the interpretability of these deep networks with the aim to open up the black-box. However, most of these approaches are specifically developed for visual modalities. In addition, the interpretations provided by these systems require expert knowledge and understanding for intelligibility. This indicates a vital gap between the explainability provided by the systems and the novice user. To bridge this gap, we present a novel framework i.e. Time-Series eXplanation (TSXplain) system which produces a natural language based explanation of the decision taken by a NN. It uses the extracted statistical features to describe the decision of a NN, merging the deep learning world with that of statistics. The two-level explanation provides ample description of the decision made by the network to aid an expert as well as a novice user alike. Our survey and reliability assessment test confirm that the generated explanations are meaningful and correct. We believe that generating natural language based descriptions of the network's decisions is a big step towards opening up the black-box.

Neural-Symbolic Computing: An Effective Methodology for Principled Integration of Machine Learning and Reasoning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Current advances in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in general, and deep learning in particular have reached unprecedented impact not only across research communities, but also over popular media channels. However, concerns about interpretability and accountability of AI have been raised by influential thinkers. In spite of the recent impact of AI, several works have identified the need for principled knowledge representation and reasoning mechanisms integrated with deep learning-based systems to provide sound and explainable models for such systems. Neural-symbolic computing aims at integrating, as foreseen by Valiant, two most fundamental cognitive abilities: the ability to learn from the environment, and the ability to reason from what has been learned. Neural-symbolic computing has been an active topic of research for many years, reconciling the advantages of robust learning in neural networks and reasoning and interpretability of symbolic representation. In this paper, we survey recent accomplishments of neural-symbolic computing as a principled methodology for integrated machine learning and reasoning. We illustrate the effectiveness of the approach by outlining the main characteristics of the methodology: principled integration of neural learning with symbolic knowledge representation and reasoning allowing for the construction of explainable AI systems. The insights provided by neural-symbolic computing shed new light on the increasingly prominent need for interpretable and accountable AI systems.

Learning-based Single-step Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Reconstruction Without Brain Extraction

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) estimates the underlying tissue magnetic susceptibility from MRI gradient-echo phase signal and typically requires several processing steps. These steps involve phase unwrapping, brain volume extraction, background phase removal and solving an ill-posed inverse problem. The resulting susceptibility map is known to suffer from inaccuracy near the edges of the brain tissues, in part due to imperfect brain extraction, edge erosion of the brain tissue and the lack of phase measurement outside the brain. This inaccuracy has thus hindered the application of QSM for measuring the susceptibility of tissues near the brain edges, e.g., quantifying cortical layers and generating superficial venography. To address these challenges, we propose a learning-based QSM reconstruction method that directly estimates the magnetic susceptibility from total phase images without the need for brain extraction and background phase removal, referred to as autoQSM. The neural network has a modified U-net structure and is trained using QSM maps computed by a two-step QSM method. 209 healthy subjects with ages ranging from 11 to 82 years were employed for patch-wise network training. The network was validated on data dissimilar to the training data, e.g. in vivo mouse brain data and brains with lesions, which suggests that the network has generalized and learned the underlying mathematical relationship between magnetic field perturbation and magnetic susceptibility. AutoQSM was able to recover magnetic susceptibility of anatomical structures near the edges of the brain including the veins covering the cortical surface, spinal cord and nerve tracts near the mouse brain boundaries. The advantages of high-quality maps, no need for brain volume extraction and high reconstruction speed demonstrate its potential for future applications.

Markov versus quantum dynamic models of belief change during evidence monitoring

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Two different dynamic models for belief change during evidence monitoring were evaluated: Markov and quantum. They were empirically tested with an experiment in which participants monitored evidence for an initial period of time, made a probability rating, then monitored more evidence, before making a second rating. The models were qualitatively tested by manipulating the time intervals in a manner that provided a test for interference effects of the first rating on the second. The Markov model predicted no interference whereas the quantum model predicted interference. A quantitative comparison of the two models was also carried out using a generalization criterion method: the parameters were fit to data from one set of time intervals, and then these same parameters were used to predict data from another set of time intervals. The results indicated that some features of both Markov and quantum models are needed to accurately account for the results.

Neutron Transmission Strain Tomography for Non-Constant Strain-Free Lattice Spacing

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Recently, several algorithms for strain tomography from energy-resolved neutron transmission measurements have been proposed. These methods assume that the strain-free lattice spacing $d_0$ is a known constant limiting their application to the study of stresses generated by manufacturing and loading methods that do not alter this parameter. In this paper, we consider the more general problem of jointly reconstructing the strain and $d_0$ fields. A method for solving this inherently non-linear problem is presented that ensures the estimated strain field satisfies equilibrium and can include knowledge of boundary conditions. This method is tested on a simulated data set with realistic noise levels, demonstrating that it is possible to jointly reconstruct $d_0$ and the strain field.
