AI in Five, Fifty and Five Hundred Years -- Part Three -- Five Hundred Years
Check out part one and two of this series for the first five and fifty years in AI. In part three we push the very limits of reality and look 500 years into the swirling depths of tomorrow. We've spread out towards the stars and colonized the solar system, from settlements orbiting the glittering rings of Saturn, to sprawling cities on the red hills of Mars built by nano insects invisible to the eyes. When their big bellies are filled to bursting, they rocket along invisible superhighways, delivering He3 to energy hungry fusion micro-reactors that power the interplanetary economy. Beyond the rings, deep space mining ships release clouds of drones like baby spiders into the wind and they digest asteroids hurtling in the endless void. The drones fuel an unprecedented building boom on nearly every planet circling the sun, as city after city goes up on barren rocks long hostile to organic life.
What If Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) Ruled the World?
What if instead of political parties, presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, armies, autocrats, and who knows what else, we turned everything over to expert systems? What if we engineered them to be faithful, for example, to one simple principle: "human beings regardless of age, gender, race, origin, religion, location, intelligence, income or wealth, should be treated equally, fairly and consistently"? Here's some dialogue โ enabled by natural language processing (NLP) โ with an expert system named "Decider" that operates from that single principle (you can imagine how it might behave if the principle was completely different โ the opposite of equal and fair). The principle is supported by the data and probabilities the system collects and interprets. The "inferences" made by Decider are pre-programmed.

SpaceX satellites pose new headache for astronomers
WASHINGTON - It looked like a scene from a sci-fi blockbuster: An astronomer in the Netherlands captured footage of a train of brightly lit SpaceX satellites ascending through the night sky last week, stunning space enthusiasts across the globe. But the sight has also provoked an outcry among astronomers who say the constellation, which so far consists of 60 broadband-beaming satellites but could one day grow to as many as 12,000, may threaten our view of the cosmos and deal a blow to scientific discovery. The launch was tracked around the world and it soon became clear that the satellites were visible to the naked eye: a new headache for researchers who already have to find workarounds to deal with objects cluttering their images of deep space. "People were making extrapolations that if many of the satellites in these new mega-constellations had that kind of steady brightness, then in 20 years or less, for a good part the night anywhere in the world, the human eye would see more satellites than stars," said Bill Keel, an astronomer at the University of Alabama. The satellites' brightness has since diminished as their orientation has stabilized and they have continued their ascent to their final orbit at an altitude of 550 kilometers (340 miles).
Beating the Bookies with Machine Learning
"The dealer always wins" is a typical saying in gambling. It reflects the fact that in most games of chance the house (e.g. the casino or the bookmaker) has a statistical advantage. In other words, assuming the betted amount is 1, the house has an expected return higher than 1, in contrast to the gambler who has an expected return smaller than 1. Therefore, if you visit the casino, most likely you will make a net loss in the long run. Sports betting is no different.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING
Last week, another notable AI milestone occurred. Fresh off the heels of the U.S. Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and Federal Banking Agencies' recent initiative that urged financial services organizations to implement "innovative approaches" like AI to better combat money laundering, terrorist financing and other illicit financial threats, U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio) announced the Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act. The bipartisan legislation represents a coordinated, national strategy for developing AI and will provide a $2.2 billion federal investment over five years to "build an AI-ready workforce, accelerating the responsible delivery of AI applications for government agencies, academia and the private sector over the next 10 years." Many businesses are spending exorbitant amounts of time and money on what they think is AI, yet in reality failing to reap any of the benefits of true unsupervised learning technology. This legislation is desperately needed.
