The University of South Carolina wants to start working smarter. Later this summer, the school will open an institute dedicated to studying and developing artificial intelligence, which is sometimes abbreviated AI, the school announced Tuesday. The institute aims to use its AI research to help develop "self-improving" and customized programs for social workers, pharmacists, teachers and more, the release said. To do that, "The AI Institute plans to enlist philosophers, ethicists, public policy experts, and lawyers dedicated to exploring the societal impact of AI technology, both the good and the unintended negative outcomes," the release said. "For example, some have expressed concern that autonomous vehicles could soon put tens of thousands of truck drivers out of work."

Russia is requiring dating app Tinder to hand over data on its users -- including messages -- to national intelligence agencies, part of the country's widening crackdown on internet freedoms. The communications regulator said Monday that Tinder was included on a list of online services operating in Russia that are required to provide user data on demand to Russian authorities, including the FSB security agency. Tinder, an app where people looking for dates swipe left or right on the profiles of other users, will have to cooperate with Russian authorities or face being completely blocked in the country. The rule would apply to any user's data that goes through Russian servers, including messages to other people on the app. Tinder was not immediately available for comment.

YOKOHAMA - Automated trains in Yokohama resumed services Tuesday -- but with drivers in control -- three days after one of them reversed into a buffer and injured 14 passengers, the line operator said. Yokohama Seaside Line Co. suspended services after the accident at Shin-Sugita Station at around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday. The train traveled the wrong way for about 25 meters and hit the buffer shortly after departing. The company has not determined the cause of the accident at the terminal station on the 11-kilometer line, but indicated there had been a problem with the vehicle's electrical system. Driverless services will resume "after the company investigates the cause of the accident and takes measures to prevent a recurrence," transport minister Keiichi Ishii told reporters.
