At a roundtable dinner at CMS's London headquarters in spring 2019, we brought together industry leaders from the automotive and technology (autotech) world and key members of the CMS Autotech Group to discuss the commercial potential of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). We also discussed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on this growing sector. In this report, we capture expert views on the current status and future outlook for the industry, and on the key catalysts that are needed for CAVs to deliver their full potential. Vehicle automation and connectivity are currently being driven forwards at an ever-quickening pace, spurred on by AI-powered technologies. Cars are increasingly becoming digital content platforms in their own right. The roll-out of new communications networks and technologies will play a major role in underpinning this mobile'internet of things'.
Asteroids, research, robots: Poll shows Americans don't want a space program focused on moon
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Americans prefer a space program that focuses on potential asteroid impacts, scientific research and using robots to explore the cosmos over sending humans back to the moon or on to Mars, a poll shows. The poll by The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, released Thursday, one month before the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, lists asteroid and comet monitoring as the No. 1 desired objective for the U.S. space program. About two-thirds of Americans call that very or extremely important, and about a combined 9 in 10 call it at least moderately important. The poll comes as the White House pushes to get astronauts back on the moon, but only about a quarter of Americans said moon or Mars exploration by astronauts should be among the space program's highest priorities. About another third called each of those moderately important.

Medical alert systems have been around for some time. Often, they're wearable devices that can detect when you fall, and alert emergency personnel if it senses you aren't responding. But what happens if you aren't wearing a device, or if you aren't experiencing any triggering signs or symptoms of a medical emergency at all?
MPs in a spin as games chief appears to deny Fortnite makes money
A Commons committee was left baffled as video game executives appeared to deny making money from their own games, admit to ignoring regulations governing data protection and age restrictions, and claim ignorance over how much time their own users were spending on games. Representatives from Epic Games, makers of Fortnite: Battle Royale, and EA Games, the publisher of the Fifa series of football games, appeared as witnesses in front of the Commons Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee as part of its inquiry into immersive and addictive technologies. Both games have been the subject of intense scrutiny after reports of children spending an unhealthy amount of time and money on them, with Prince Harry making an unusual public attack on Fortnite in April: "That game shouldn't be allowed," he said. "It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. But rather than address the concerns directly, both companies flatly denied that there was a problem, even while admitting that they did not collect the data required to answer many of the committee's questions. When presented with Harry's remarks, Epic's general counsel, Canon Pence, said they "couldn't be further from the truth about our ethics and design philosophy". He added: "It's always been our effort and intent to create a fun, fair, flexible, engaging and generous form of interactive entertainment.

The Entrepreneurship Centre at Cambridge Judge supports new programme that uses artificial intelligence to tackle major NHS challenges. The Entrepreneurship Centre at Cambridge Judge Business School and the Eastern Academic Health Science Network (Eastern AHSN) are sponsoring a new programme that brings together the health sector, universities and the tech industry to use artificial intelligence to tackle major challenges in the National Health Service. Applications are now open for the programme, called MedTechBOOST, which has been launched by business network Central Working and innovation specialists Studio Zao. The five day, free-to-enter programme starts on 2 September 2019 at The Bradfield Centre, the tech hub at Cambridge Science Park. It is open to startups, technologists, researchers, PhDs, consultants and other clinicians who would like the opportunity to come together with supporters and partners to co-create solutions that address two of the biggest challenges facing the NHS today – mental health and healthy ageing.

On professional sites, eggheads are discussing how technology such as machine learning or ML has impacted businesses and the prospects of career growth in India.
