New York: Artificial Intelligence (AI) can detect the signs of an irregular heart rhythm - atrial fibrillation (AF) in an electrocardiogram (EKG), even if the heart is in normal rhythm at the time of a test, says new Mayo Clinic research. The AI-enabled EKG can detect recent atrial fibrillation that occurred without symptoms or that is impending, potentially improving treatment options. The research could improve the efficiency of the EKG, a noninvasive and widely available method of heart disease screening, said the study published in The Lancet. While common, atrial fibrillation often is fleeting and is challenging to diagnose. "When people come in with a stroke, we really want to know if they had atrial fibrillation in the days before the stroke, because it guides the treatment," said Paul Friedman, Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic.

The inaugural meeting of the Consortium for Self-Aware Machining and Metrology (CSAM) brought together manufacturing experts with mathematicians who had little basic familiarity with machining operations, all with the goal of advancing the development of, in the words of meeting organizer Dr. Tony Schmitz, "production systems with the ability to know their own state and respond." In short, this was a conference entirely focused on uniting machining with artificial intelligence (AI). Of course, the manufacturing people in attendance needed basic instruction also. The hope of applying AI to manufacturing is still in its early stages, and one of the first steps is just to figure out what the one might mean for the other.

On March 7th, the Center for Responsible Business and the Human Rights Center, in collaboration with Microsoft, hosted the third annual conference on Business, Technology, and Human Rights. The event gathered technologists and practitioners across industry, nonprofit, and academia, as well as students around the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Social Impact. As student advisory board members at the Center for Responsible Business, we want to be part of the movement to move business to the forefront of social and environmental impact. Attending this conference and meeting some of the leading practitioners in the field of AI gave us the chance to understand how we can ensure this burgeoning technology can help achieve that goal. AI can serve humanity and promote positive social, environmental, and economic outcomes through a focus on human-centered, inclusive AI design. This means adopting a more conscientious design of AI algorithms and tools that puts the full diversity of human needs and consequences at the center.

Israeli army in no rush to go fully robotic, puts sealed tanks through their paces
ELYAKIM ARMY BASE, ISRAEL – Israel, a world leader in hi-tech, is around 30 years away from its ambition of deploying robot forces, and for now will chose between three prototypes of semi-automated armored vehicles to cocoon its troops in battle, defense officials said on Sunday. Israel has long eyed a future robot army as a means of reducing the use of soldiers on its combustible fronts with Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, just as its air force has increasingly relied on pilot-less drones. The country draws most of its military personnel from teenage conscripts. An unveiling of Israel's newly developed operating suites for ground fighting vehicles made clear it plans to keep soldiers at the controls, albeit entirely insulated from the outside: Hatches battened, the cabins will have smart-screens, fed by outside cameras and sensors, instead of windows or ports. "Now the people will be sitting in the tank, it's closed, they are far better protected, and they can advance without worrying about snipers or other things," said Brig.
