Finding these collisions is harder than the proverbial search for the needle in the haystack. But game-changing help is on the way. Fermilab scientists and other collaborators successfully tested a prototype machine-learning technology that speeds up processing by 30 to 175 times compared to traditional methods.


Lingang autonomous vehicle testing center opens - SHINE News

The Shanghai Lingang Autonomous and Informationalized Vehicle Integrative Testing and Demonstration Zone opened on Friday. It is the first project opened after Lingang expanded Shanghai's FTZ. So far, the testing and demonstration zone has built 26.1 kilometers of road for open air testing, 3 square kilometers of space for tunnel testing and a data center. Gu Changshi from the Lingang Special Area said compared with other driverless vehicle testing areas, Lingang has better road conditions and more space which allows more simulations to be tested. More than 10 companies focusing on autos and artificial intelligence have set up research centers and plants in the zone.


Huawei launches A.I. chip as it looks to defy US pressure, pitting it against giants like Nvidia

Huawei announced the commercial availability of an artificial intelligence (AI) chip Friday, pitting it against major American giants like Qualcomm and Nvidia, as it looks to defy continued U.S. pressure and prove it can still bring out core technology. The chip, called the Ascend 910, was first unveiled in October last year and is aimed at data centers. Companies using AI applications require huge amounts of data to train smart algorithms, which can take several days or weeks. Huawei claims that its chip can process more data in a faster amount of time than its competitors and help train networks in a matter of minutes. "We have been making steady progress since we announced our AI strategy in October last year," Eric Xu, one of Huawei's rotating chairmen, said in a press release.

Uncle Sam is padding the Treasury with millions of dollars to assess bots at the same time that corporations invest more in advanced technology and labor-saving machinery, according to experts. New "robot" taxes are expected to multiply in the coming decades as millions of Americans see their jobs automated away. "Yes, governments already tax robots because they tax virtually everything that goes into developing and making robots," economist and author Mark Thornton told The Post. "In a few cases, there are subsidies such as government grants for robot development. But that still means they are taxing you and me to provide the subsidies." Taxing robots -- a proposal first suggested by Microsoft founder Bill Gates in 2017 as a way for government to tame the inexorable ascent of machines, and to finance new programs like elder care and education -- is back on the front burner.

Together, their robot -- designed to water rows of plants in a greenhouse, and all of the motors, pumps, and tools that go with it -- were well over the 100-pound threshold for extra airline baggage fees. So the team secured as many fragile parts that could fit into the heavy-duty travel case donated by the Espaรฑola Fire Department and separated the less-delicate but still precious cargo in an assortment of suitcases. Once in a Beijing hotel room, they nervously opened everything. To their relief, nothing was broken.

How an AI in China helped nab a suspected murderer - with a face scan

We've read plenty of stories of how AI can be horrible, but it can also be surprisingly useful. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, a person accused of murder was caught by an AI after he tried to scan his dead girlfriend's face to get a loan sanctioned. The report notes that a 29-year-old man in Fujian province was suspected of killing his girlfriend after an argument over finances. He tried to scan her face in a lending app called Money Station. The app uses AI to verify applications, and it asks them to wink during the approval process.
