Microsoft to train 5000 govt employees on AI, cloud

New Delhi: Microsoft India today launched a program under which it will train 5000 government employees over the next year on AI (artificial intelligence) and cloud computing skills. The program, called'Digital Governance Tech Tour', will comprise of physical and virtual workshops, said the company in a press release. The program was inaugurated by Amitabh Kant, chief executive of NITI Aayog, the government's policy think-tank and Ajay Prakash Sawhney, secretary, MeITY (The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology). The company said that the program will be open to technocrats and IT professionals across in the government, including employees of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs); government partners as well as solutions/systems integrators and is free of cost. Under the program, developers can earn the AZ-900 Certification, which demonstrates foundational level cloud computing skills on the spot at no cost, after clearing an exam.


Using Artificial Intelligence To Avert 'Environmental Catastrophe' - Liwaiwai

A new Centre at the University of Cambridge will develop artificial intelligence techniques to help address some of the biggest threats facing the planet. Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Centre for Doctoral Training in Application of Artificial Intelligence to the study of Environmental Risks (AI4ER) is one of 16 new Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) announced today. The Cambridge Centre will be led by Professor Simon Redfern, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences. Climate risk, environmental change and environmental hazards pose some of the most significant threats we face in the 21st century. At the same time, we have increasingly larger datasets available to observe the planet, from the atomic scale all the way through to global satellite observations.

Toyota and Suzuki team up for development of self-driving car technology

The two automakers announced Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, they are partnering in the development of self-driving car technology. TOKYO – Japan's top automaker, Toyota, and smaller rival Suzuki are partnering in the development of self-driving car technology, as manufacturers around the world grapple with innovations in the industry. Under the deal, announced Wednesday, Toyota will take a 4.9% stake in Suzuki Motor Corp. valued at 96 billion yen ($908 million), and Suzuki will make a 48 billion yen ($454 million) investment in Toyota. In 2017, Toyota Motor Corp. and Suzuki agreed to work together in ecological and safety technology.


People and Machines: Partners in Innovation

The greatest impact of intelligent technologies won't be from eliminating jobs but from changing what people do and driving innovation deeper into the business. Thoughtful adoption of intelligent technologies will be essential to survival for many companies. But simply implementing the newest technologies and automation tools won't be enough. Success will depend on whether organizations use them to innovate in their operations and in their products and services -- and whether they acquire and develop the human capital to do so. In a recent Deloitte survey of 250 executives familiar with how their companies are thinking about intelligent technologies, nearly three out of four said that they expected AI to substantially transform their organizations within three years.1 Of course, the workforce will be deeply affected by all this change. Yet even as AI eliminates some jobs in the coming decade (it most certainly will), it may create as many positions as it kills and open up vast new opportunities for collaborations between humans and machines.


We're still not getting voice assistants right

The BBC is launching its own voice assistant, appropriately called'Beeb' (though the efficacy of that wake word is completely suspect in a world where people might talk about Justin Bieber, just saying). Upon hearing this news, you might be tempted to think, "Ugh, why? The Beeb assistant might be a boondoggle, a waste of British taxpayer money, and a classic example of the BBC making a tech thing without a super clear reason or need just because it can.
