From capturing collisions to avoiding them

With about one billion proton–proton collisions per second at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the LHC experiments need to sift quickly through the wealth of data to choose which collisions to analyse. To cope with an even higher number of collisions per second in the future, scientists are investigating computing methods such as machine-learning techniques. A new collaboration is now looking at how these techniques deployed on chips known as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) could apply to autonomous driving, so that the fast decision-making used for particle collisions could help prevent collisions on the road. FPGAs have been used at CERN for many years and for many applications. Unlike the central processing unit of a laptop, these chips follow simple instructions and process many parallel tasks at once.

Artificial intelligence is having a significant impact on mainstream business and computing after years of being in the hype cycle. Companies such as Amazon and Netflix have saved billions of dollars a year, and AI is expected to boost the global economy by trillions of dollars over the next several years. Concerns about AI's use remain, however, including security risks and biases it could introduce into hiring and society as a whole as well as bad decisions it might make due to poor underlying data quality. Gender Diversity in AI Research

There is a serious gender diversity crisis in AI research Only 13.83 per cent of authors are women and, in relative terms, the proportion of AI papers co-authored by at least one woman has not improved since the 1990s. Location and research domain are significant drivers of gender diversity Women in the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark are more likely to publish AI papers while those in Japan and Singapore are less likely to. The UK is 22nd on this list, with 26.62 per cent of AI papers having at least one female co-author. Women working in physics, education, computer ethics and other societal issues, and biology, are more likely to publish work on AI in comparison to those working in computer science or mathematics. There is a significant gender diversity gap in universities, big tech companies and other research institutions Apart from the University of Washington, every other academic institution and organisation in our dataset has less than 25 per cent female AI researchers.


How can AI-powered cameras measure customers' happiness?

AI-enabled cameras are helping the RTA to analyse the facial expressions of passengers which then allows decision-makers to take actions to rectify the situation. Smart cameras powered by artificial intelligence (AI) technology installed by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have screened the facial expressions of 26,476 customers at four service centres (Deira, Awir, Barsha and Um Ramool) during the first half of 2019 year. Cameras revealed that the overall customers' happiness rating ranged from 85.6 per cent to as much as 92.8 per cent. In explanation, Ahmed Mahboub, Executive Director of Customers Happiness at RTA's Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector, said: "The installation of smart cameras to measure customers satisfaction rating is part UAE's AI Strategy, Dubai's Smart City Initiative, and RTA's Strategic Goal Smart Dubai. He cautioned that variations in the happiness index are not attributed to the quality or speed of delivering services. The customer might be experiencing personal circumstances negatively impacting his or her facial expression, he noted. Instead, cameras provide instant and accurate feed about customers happiness rating. Accordingly, decision-makers will be in a better position to take actions to rectify the situation," he explained.

Chinese AI start-up Megvii files for Hong Kong IPO

Chinese AI firm Megvii Technology Ltd, backed by Alibaba, has filed for an IPO in Hong Kong, targeting proceeds of at least $500 million. It is a facial recognition company, with the brand platform Face . Founded in 2011 by CEO Yin Qi, Megvii would become the first Chinese AI firm to go public in Hong Kong. This filing comes amid government plans for China to become an international leader in AI. The IPO proceeds will primarily be used for research and development, marketing and sales plus global expansion and strategic investments opportunities. Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan are joint sponsors of the IPO.


Future of Indian higher education

India's higher education sector has supplied some of the world's best talent. The CEOs of some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies--Microsoft, Google, Mastercard, and Adobe--are a product of the Indian higher education system. "We've been very successful so far with the American military and the individual weapons platforms," Donovan said. "The problem is these exquisite capabilities are largely unconnected from each other. We need to get to a point where we have a family of systems and everything is connected for command and control. We are ultimately trying to get to a point where any sensor will provide information to any shooter."

Productive communication with the physician is essential for the patient to see improvements in their condition, however, most doctors have never had their communication skills formally assessed. Exploring potential digital solutions to this gap in communication, researchers from The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Trinity College Dublin, and the University of Edinburgh discussed the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing patient-provider interactions in a BMJ article. "Many clinicians' communications skills aren't formally assessed–either during school or in early practice," said senior author Glyn Elwyn, MD, PhD, MSc, Dartmouth Institute Professor. "At the same time, there is a lot of evidence that clinicians often struggle when communicating with their patients. It's hard to improve on something when you're not being given any feedback and don't know how you're doing."
