AI tool has potential to predict future heart attacks
In research funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the team developed the biomarker, or'fingerprint' โ called the fat radiomic profile (FRP), using machine learning. The FRP reveals biological red flags in the perivascular space lining blood vessels which supply blood to the heart. Furthermore, the tool identifies inflammation, scarring, and changes to these blood vessels, which all indicate the chances of a heart attack in the future. Very often when an individual goes to the hospital with chest pain, a standard component of care is to have a coronary CT angiogram (CCTA). This is a scan of the coronary arteries to check for any narrowed or blocked segments.

Britain risks sleepwalking into a "ghastly, Orwellian, omniscient police state" unless it addresses the ethical dilemmas posed by new technologies such as facial recognition and artificial intelligence, the Met Commissioner has warned. Cressida Dick said while the digital age presented numerous opportunities to help in the fight against crime it was vital there was a strict legal framework to ensure it was not used inappropriately. In a speech delivered at the Lowy Institute think tank in Sydney, Australia, Ms Dick said it was important to remember that the role of technology and data was to enable humans "to make better decisions.'' She said: "We're now tiptoeing into a world of robotics, AI [artificial intelligence] and machine learning ... the next step might be predictive policing. "People are starting to get worried about that ... particularly because of the potential for bias in the data or the algorithm, [like] live facial recognition software."
MIT report examines how to make technology work for society
Automation is not likely to eliminate millions of jobs any time soon -- but the U.S. still needs vastly improved policies if Americans are to build better careers and share prosperity as technological changes occur, according to a new MIT report about the workplace. The report, which represents the initial findings of MIT's Task Force on the Work of the Future, punctures some conventional wisdom and builds a nuanced picture of the evolution of technology and jobs, the subject of much fraught public discussion. The likelihood of robots, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) wiping out huge sectors of the workforce in the near future is exaggerated, the task force concludes -- but there is reason for concern about the impact of new technology on the labor market. In recent decades, technology has contributed to the polarization of employment, disproportionately helping high-skilled professionals while reducing opportunities for many other workers, and new technologies could exacerbate this trend. Moreover, the report emphasizes, at a time of historic income inequality, a critical challenge is not necessarily a lack of jobs, but the low quality of many jobs and the resulting lack of viable careers for many people, particularly workers without college degrees.

In an article for the military blog War on the Rocks, nuclear policy wonks turned college professors Adam Lowther and Curtis McGiffin, proposed making it easier for the President to launch nukes and advocating for an American, artificially intelligent "Dead Hand." "Dead Hand" is a Russian fail-deadly (like a fail-safe, but everyone dies), first deployed during the Cold War that ensures Russia's nukes fly if the country is attacked, even if no one exists to launch them Nuclear deterrence hinges on the theory that no country is willing to launch a nuke because it knows that rival countries will retaliate in kind. "Some ideas cross into bad science fictionland" Lowther and McGiffin suggest that, thanks to Russia's new nuclear weapons, the credible fear that America could retaliate with a nuclear strike is disappearing.
New Study Shows EarlySign's Machine Learning Algorithm Can Predict Which Cardiac Patients are at High-Risk Following Discharge
Medial EarlySign (earlysign.com), a leader in machine-learning based solutions to aid in early detection and prevention of high-burden diseases, today announced the results of new research with Mayo Clinic assessing the effectiveness of machine learning for predicting cardiac patients' future risk trajectories following hospital discharge. The peer-reviewed retrospective data study, Leveraging Machine Learning Techniques to Forecast Patient Prognosis After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, evaluated the ability of machine learning models to assess risk for patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) inside the hospital and following their discharge. The analyzed algorithm was developed by Medial EarlySign data scientists to identify patients at highest risk of complications and hospital readmission after undergoing PCI, one of the most frequently performed procedures in U.S. hospitals. "Contemporary risk models have traditionally had little success in identifying patients' post-PCI risks for complications, in-patient mortality, and hospital readmission. This study shows that machine learning tools may enable cardiology care teams to identify patients who may be on high-risk trajectories," said Rajiv Gulati, MD, Ph.D., Interventional Cardiologist at Mayo Clinic.
