Global Spending on AI Systems to Hit $98 Billion by 2023 – IDC -- ADTmag
Spending on artificial intelligence (AI) hardware and software is predicted to expand two-and-a-half times from current expenditure of $37.5 billion to $97.9 billion, according to a new report by International Data Corporation (IDC). That is a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.4 percent during the five-year 2018-2023 period of the report's forecast. Developers will see increased spending for AI software as it is predicted to overtake hardware purchases by 2023, according to the IDC Worldwide Artificial Intelligence Systems Spending Guide. In 2019 hardware spending for AI infrastructure is outpacing software purchases, IDC reports. But by 2023, it predicts that spending for AI software and AI software platforms will see 36.7 percent CAGR.

CMU Quietly Hosts Project Maven Offshoot Through Army AI Task Force
The U.S. Army is developing data surveillance and analysis technology in Pittsburgh, though an offshoot of the controversial Department of Defense initiative Project Maven within Carnegie Mellon University's Army AI Task Force. CMU's involvement comes after the project made headlines last year when Google employees signed a petition en masse to cease work on the initiative. The project, the second undertaken by the Task Force, is seeking to develop an algorithm to analyze drone, overhead, and ground data to identify targets and objects of interest. The military does so much reconnaissance that human analysts simply can't keep up. Their image and sensor networks generate tons of data daily, which the Department of Defense says necessitates the use of artificial intelligence to do effective analysis.

Thieves used voice-mimicking software to imitate a company executive's speech and dupe his subordinate into sending hundreds of thousands of dollars to a secret account, the company's insurer said, in a remarkable case that some researchers are calling one of the world's first publicly reported artificial-intelligence heists. The managing director of a British energy company, believing his boss was on the phone, followed orders one Friday afternoon in March to wire more than $240,000 to an account in Hungary, said representatives from the French insurance giant Euler Hermes, which declined to name the company. The request was "rather strange," the director noted later in an email, but the voice was so lifelike that he felt he had no choice but to comply. The insurer, whose case was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, provided new details on the theft to The Washington Post on Wednesday, including an email from the employee tricked by what the insurer is referring to internally as "the false Johannes." Now being developed by a wide range of Silicon Valley titans and AI start-ups, such voice-synthesis software can copy the rhythms and intonations of a person's voice and be used to produce convincing speech.

Using the speed of modern computers and large data sets, deep learning algorithms have recently produced results comparable to those of human experts in various applicable fields, but with different characteristics that are distant from current knowledge of learning in neuroscience. Using advanced experiments on neuronal cultures and large scale simulations, a group of scientists at Bar-Ilan University in Israel has demonstrated a new type of ultrafast artifical intelligence algorithms -- based on the very slow brain dynamics -- which outperform learning rates achieved to date by state-of-the-art learning algorithms. In an article published today in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers rebuild the bridge between neuroscience and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms that has been left virtually useless for almost 70 years. "The current scientific and technological viewpoint is that neurobiology and machine learning are two distinct disciplines that advanced independently," said the study's lead author, Prof. Ido Kanter, of Bar-Ilan University's Department of Physics and Gonda (Goldschmied) Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center.

The PayMaya digital wallet launched a new feature that allows users to submit "video selfies" to verify their identities and unlock upgrades. PayMaya upgrades include higher transaction limits, sending money to other PayMaya account holders, access to a virtual card for online transactions, exclusive perks and the ability to share and earn from referral codes. PayMaya said the feature was a first in the Philippines and would use artificial intelligence. "By employing the power of artificial intelligence to our upgrade process, we are able to help verify the documents and identities of our customers in a faster and more efficient way," Shailesh Baidwan, president of PayMaya Philippines and Voyager Innovations, said in a statement. A.I. makes history by getting an 'A' on eighth-grade science test and passing 12th grade exam
An artificial intelligence system has made history by being the first to pass an eighth grade science test with flying colors. According to The New York Times, researchers at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle Washington have cracked the code for test-taking computers. Its system, called Aristo, received a 90 percent score on an eighth-grade science test and passed with an 80 percent grade on a 12th-grade exam. An AI passed an eighth grade science exam with flying colors, marking a first for the technology. Scientists four years ago failed to get AI to achieve a passing grade.
