I realized I was spending more time interacting with technology than with any other human being. UW launches new school of computer science, responding to student demand and workforce need

The lab is directed by Bilge Mutlu, associate professor of computer science, psychology and industrial engineering, and focuses on the study of how humans interact with robots including specialization in human-robot collaboration, robot-mediated communication and designing robot peers for children. The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced on Thursday the creation of its first new school in two decades, responding to high demand from students and a burgeoning need in the state's workforce. The vision for a new School of Computer, Data and Information Sciences reflects a number of forces coming together on the flagship campus. Computer science is now the most popular undergraduate major at the university, growing to 1,560 students in 2018. Over several years, massive increases in student enrollment strained the computer science department's resources. Further, the department had fewer than half the number of faculty found in other top-ranked computer science programs, according to a September 2018 report.


Government explores artificial intelligence to combat TB

New Delhi: Government is exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) for tackling the burden of tuberculosis (TB) in India. The Central TB Division of the Union Health Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Mumbai to explore the application of cutting-edge AI technology in its fight against the disease. The health ministry officials said that as a part of the collaboration, Wadhwani AI will support National TB programme become AI-ready which would include, developing, piloting, and deploying AI-based solutions. It would support the programme in vulnerability and hot-spot mapping, modelling novel methods of screening and diagnostics and enabling decision support for care-givers apart from supporting the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) in adoption of other AI technologies. "The RNTCP has been at the forefront of adoption of newer technologies in healthcare. The AI provides a unique opportunity for the health sector, bringing efficiency, saving resources and bringing accuracy in interpretation and enhancing quality of service delivery. Its use in this sector has an ample scope to improve outcomes, especially in situations where resources are limited," reads an official statement from Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The conference attracted both domestic and international AI scientists, entrepreneurs, government leaders, and officials to discuss the latest industry trends and technological advancements. An accompanying exhibition covering an area of almost 15,000 square meters displayed cutting-edge technologies related to industrial ecology, AI urban application, autonomous vehicle operation, etc. Nearly 400 home-grown and global companies participated in the event. Notably, after functioning as a "factory to the world" for almost four decades, China is now working vigorously towards becoming an innovation hub for cutting-edge technologies such as big data, virtual reality, and AI.

Artificial Intelligence Boosts Clinical Trial Enrollment in Lung Cancer - Cancer Therapy Advisor

Results of a study evaluating the use of artificial intelligence for matching oncology patients with clinical trials showed a 58.4% increase in trial enrollment compared with traditional screening methods. The findings from this study were presented at the IASLC 2019 World Conference on Lung Cancer hosted by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer in Barcelona, Spain. IBM Watson Health's Clinical Trials Matching (CTM) is a system that is trained to abstract patient- and clinical trial-specific data from a variety of sources and harnesses machine learning to find clinical trials that are appropriate for a given patient. In this study, CTM was trained and used to match patients at an academic oncology outpatient clinic to 1 or more of the approximately 42 available clinical trials in lung cancer. The matches generated by CTM were subsequently validated by clinical trial coordinators, and the validated matches were provided to oncologists prior to the patients' clinic visits.

One of the most mindless features of modern education are standardized tests, which require pupils to regurgitate information usually committed to memory in rote fashion. Fortunately, a machine has now been made that can complete questions on a test about as well as the average student, perhaps freeing humans for more worthwhile types of learning. Just don't be confused that it has anything to do with learning as you typically think of it. Researchers at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle on Wednesday announced a new deep learning neural network program, called "Aristo" (a kind of play on Aristotle), giving it a good trumpet call with a story in The New York Times suggesting the thing can actually reason about science. What they did was make a program that can select correct answers on multiple-choice questions for the high school Regents exam for New York City, with an accuracy of 80% to 90%.
