On Tuesday, the company said it raised $72.5 million in a round led by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Ping An Global Voyager Fund, with continued investments from Wells Fargo & Co., Nvidia Corp. and Nexus Venture Partners. H2O.ai, based in Mountain View, Calif., has raised a total of $147 million since it was founded in 2012. The company sells software that helps businesses incorporate machine learning into their applications to make them more predictive. Its machine-learning platform is used by more than 18,000 companies, including Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., which uses it to price retail goods, and Capital One Financial Corp., which uses it to help detect fraud, Mr. Ambati said. The platform offers a set of tools that are designed to simplify AI for nonexperts, and can be used for a range of applications.

Press Release – BOULDER, CO – September 6, 2019 – YWCA Boulder County, one of the first two YWCA branches in the country to be awarded a grant by Google to increase black and Latina students' access to computer science and artificial intelligence education, has announced a Google JAM session series to kick off the organization's STEM E3 program. Three JAM sessions will be offered from 1– 6 p.m. at Google with the first session scheduled for September 16, 2019 (followed by sessions on October 14, 2019 and November 11, 2019). The program will provide an opportunity for young women of color between the ages of 9 to 14 to be introduced to a STEM E3 (Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship) program, which works with young women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). YWCA STEM E3 curriculum helps young women and girls of color build the confidence and skills required for future careers in computer science and artificial intelligence. "We're thrilled to have been chosen as one of two YWCAs in the country to launch the pilot STEM E3 program," said Debbie Pope, CEO of YWCA Boulder County.

With deepfakes receiving a lot of media coverage recently, synthetic media is a trending topic among AI forums and a growing area of machine learning. The possible threats posed by manipulated or synthetic media has caught the attention of government officials and even led to a House of Representatives hearing in June of 2019. Like every new and emerging technology, synthetic media comes with risks. However, companies like Lyrebird are proof that the positive applications of synthetic media outweigh the negative. From chatbots to virtual assistants, research in ASR and higher-quality audio training data have led to some of the most useful tech of the current generation.

British privacy activist Ed Bridges is set to appeal a landmark ruling that endorses the "sinister" use of facial recognition technology by the police to hunt for suspects. In what is believed to be the world's first case of its kind, Bridges told the High Court in Wales that the local police breached his rights by scanning his face without consent. "This sinister technology undermines our privacy and I will continue to fight against its unlawful use to ensure our rights are protected and we are free from disproportionate government surveillance," Bridges said in a statement. But judges said the police's use of facial recognition technology was lawful and legally justified. Civil rights group Liberty, which represented 36-year-old Bridges, said it would appeal the "disappointing" decision, while police chiefs said they understood the fears of the public.

A surgeon in India has successfully performed the first remote heart surgery on a patient who was lying on an operating table 20 miles away. During the procedure, the CorPath GRX robot--developed by a company called Corindus--inserted a small instrument called a stent in order to open blood vessels in the heart, according to a paper published in EClinicalMedicine. The operation, called percutaneous coronary intervention, is often performed in patients who have a condition called atherosclerosis, where plaque builds up in the blood vessels, restricting blood flow. The long-distance procedure was performed by Dr. Tejas Patel of the Apex Heart Institute in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. "I am honored to have been a part of this medical milestone," Patel told ZDNet.

Recently, Achronix Semiconductor, a provider of FPGA-based hardware accelerator devices, introduced its Speedster7t family, aimed at the demands of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and other high-bandwidth networking applications that can benefit from high levels of acceleration. The company claims that the devices are based on a new, highly optimized architecture. This latest FPGA architecture balances on-chip processing, interconnects and external I/O, to maximize data throughput. The Speedster7t family includes a two-dimensional network-on-chip (NoC), and a high-density array of machine-learning processors (MLPs). Hence, the NoC spans horizontally and vertically over the FPGA fabric, connecting to all of the FPGA's high-speed data and memory interfaces, supporting the high-bandwidth communication needed between on-chip processing engines.
