The Future of Financial Services Lies in the East--but Not Where (And Not Why) You Might Think

#artificialintelligence

Trips to other parts of Tokyo's technology centers helped round out the impression that Japan was becoming a major player--albeit quieter than its neighbors--within the global startup ecosystem. Visiting ZMP Inc. demonstrated the future of mobility, as this company is focused on the goal of being the "robot of everything" driving a more convenient lifestyle for everyone. This means level-four completely autonomous self-driving vehicles (a 2020 goal of Prime Minister Abe and Information Technology Minister Hirai), mass deployment of logistics robots (automated delivery) and focus on the needs of the country's aging society. Spending time with Shift Technology, I saw the well-demonstrated results of its partnership with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to innovate within Japan's second largest insurance market by leveraging technology to make insurance claims more efficient. Peter Haslebacher of Shift said, "If you succeed in Japan, you can make it in any market", referring to the complexity and homogeneity found within the Japanese ecosystem--a great challenge for any ambitious startup.

7 Machine Learning Best Practices for Business

#artificialintelligence

Netflix's famous algorithm challenge awarded a million dollars to the best algorithm for predicting user ratings for films. But did you know that the winning algorithm was never implemented into a functional model? Netflix reported that the results of the algorithm just didn't seem to justify the engineering effort needed to bring them to a production environment. At your company, you can create the most elegant machine learning model anyone has ever seen. That's no easy feat, which is why we're presenting you with seven machine learning best practices.

Four Ways AI Can Augment Human Capabilities - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence technologies might well replace humans in the workplace entirely someday. But at least for the foreseeable future, businesses will derive far more value using AI to augment and enhance existing capabilities than to automate away human jobs. Analyst firm Gartner predicted in a recent report that by 2021 organizations worldwide will create $2.9 trillion of business value and some 6.2 billion hours of worker productivity by harnessing AI to support decision-making, improve efficiencies and to enable new applications. Far from replacing jobs, companies will use AI in conjunction with humans to create more business value, says Svetlana Sicular, research vice president at Gartner. "There are many themes about AI taking away jobs," Sicular says.

Google's Cloud Text-to-Speech gets more languages and voices - SiliconANGLE

#artificialintelligence

Google LLC today updated its Cloud Text-to-Speech service with new languages and voices in order to make it useful to more of its customers. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is intended to help companies develop better conversational interfaces for the services they supply. It works by transforming written text into artificial speech that's spoken in realistic human voices. With the service, Google is targeting three main markets: voice response systems for call centers; "internet of things" products such as car infotainment systems, TVs and robots; and applications such as podcasts and audiobooks, which convert text into speech. In a blog post, Google product manager Dan Aharon said Cloud Text-to-Speech is getting 12 new languages or variants, including Czech, English (India), Filipino, Finnish, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Mandarin Chinese (China), Modern Standard Arabic and Vietnamese.

Bestmile raises $16.5 million to optimize autonomous vehicle fleets

#artificialintelligence

Bestmile has raised $16.5 million in venture capital as it continues to expand its platform for managing autonomous and human-driven vehicles. The Switzerland-based company's software was originally designed to help transportation companies optimize fleets of self-driving vehicles, including cars, trucks, and shuttles. But Bestmile has evolved to include traditional vehicles as the shift to an autonomous world is now stretching out over many years. "We are creating this kind of flexibility of the platform because the transition to fully autonomous will be maybe 15 years," said Bestmile cofounder and CEO Raphael Gindrat, "so our customers need one platform to manage both in parallel." Founded in 2014, the company now has more than 55 employees, most of whom are located in its Lausanne headquarters, with a handful in North America and in Asia. Bestmile currently has 15 customers and is particularly embraced by companies that have deployed autonomous shuttles in strictly defined zones.

A.I. meets H.I.: Driving Growth and Improving Customer Experience

#artificialintelligence

Melbourne, AU, Sept 2019 – Companies are now embracing Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), not just a tool to improve service efficiency but as means to forge a deeper relationship with customers. It is now used to augment processes across the business value chain, resulting in increased productivity and more informed and effective decision making. There is however still a space for Human Intelligence – H.I. In the context of Conversation Analytics, A.I. is deployed to allow us to do things quicker, faster and smarter. Take Quality Assurance (QA) as an example – long the bastion of QA staff listening to calls to assess risk, misconduct, Customer Experience (CX) opportunities and missed sales. Using this approach, most QA functions in a business AT BEST, listen to and assess 1% of their customer interactions.

Jobs of the future: What will our kids be doing in 30 years?

#artificialintelligence

Antoinette Ellis's five-year-old daughter, Zariah, already knows what she wants to be when she grows up. Her main gig will be scientist, but she plans on earning extra income as an opera singer and a part-time DJ. This future may not sound particularly realistic, but Ellis is nonetheless doing all she can to foster her daughter's interests. Zariah watches videos of opera singers, she's taking music lessons and she's often conducting little experiments, as she did this past summer, when she planted strawberries and vegetables in her grandfather's backyard. Whether Zariah ultimately becomes a multi-talented scientist-entertainer remains to be seen, but Ellis is confident she'll succeed at whatever she chooses to do.

Racial Bias and Gender Bias Examples in AI systems

#artificialintelligence

I have been thinking of interactive ways of getting my postgraduate thesis on Racial Bias, Gender Bias, AI new ways to approach Human Computer Interaction out to everyone. Life has been super busy so I have decided to add snippets of the thesis for now. For this research paper, the researcher has identified a number of areas of concern in regards to systems powered by AI being deployed in situations that affect the lives of humans. These examples will be used to further highlight this area of concern. Suggestions have made that decision-support systems powered by AI can be used to augment human judgement and reduce both conscious and unconscious biases (Anderson & Anderson, 2007).

Artificial Intelligence use should keep humans in focus - MITLA

#artificialintelligence

The Malta Information Technology Law Association (MITLA) has appealed to the government not to cede control of information to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to ensure that information remains driven by humans. In a reaction document to Government's call for public consultation on an ethical framework for AI, MITLA recommended that the human-centric element be kept strongly in focus. To this end, MITLA proposed that human-operated'kill-switches' are introduced to over-ride AI "…malfunctioning or worse, of AI systems". MITLA made a strong recommendation to Government not to grant distinct legal personality to AI systems, so as not to undermine the fundamental principle of human-centric AI, which should respect fundamental human rights. MITLA also said that to ensure that the process of creating an ethical AI framework is coherent, digital rights should first be introduced into the Maltese Constitution.
