Mayo Clinic, Google Partner On Digital Health Analytics
Google announced a 10-year digital technology partnership with the The Mayo Clinic on Sept. 10, 2019. The Mayo Clinic and Google are partnering to accelerate the delivery of healthcare "through digital technologies." Mayo said its selection of "Google Cloud" is designed to be "the cornerstone of its digital transformation" as part of a 10-year partnership with Google, a unit of Alphabet. Financial terms of the deal announced Tuesday weren't disclosed but Google will be making a sizable investment in the relationship by opening a new office in Rochester, where Mayo is based, so its engineers can work closely with Mayo researchers, doctors and data scientists.

While machine learning with the use of quantum computers still technically counts as data processing, it's on a level mankind has not seen before. Read on and learn the key concepts in the field of quantum machine learning (QML). Maciej Adamiak of SoftwareMill and Adam Mickiewicz University in his informative presentation titled "Quantum-assisted machine learning" demonstrated a machine learning algorithm that combines the operating principles of a classical computer with those of a quantum computer. He also showed examples of Python source code written to run on a quantum computer. It ran on IBM cloud services with the help of a number of libraries.

Experts in ethics, privacy and bias in AI spoke at the AI Expo Africa conference held in Cape Town this week. Highlights included an AI art and music challenge, and French company Rhoban who showed off their soccer-playing robots. The robots are also the RoboWorld Cup champions. Mushambi Mutuma, chief executive at tech company Altivex said AI was controlled by the people who input the data. "Last year Google's facial recognition software kept inputting African-Americans as gorillas. We have to have new voices and a bit more diversity because the data will never come back accurate and that's what we've tried to solve from bias," he said.

Informatica Invests in AI and Machine Learning Startup GreenBay Technologies
Informatica, the enterprise cloud data management leader, today announced it is investing in GreenBay Technologies, a data management startup focused on AI and machine learning, to develop AI innovations that strengthen the impact of Informatica's AI-powered CLAIRE engine across its Intelligent Data Platform . GreenBay Technologies has ties to the University of Wisconsin (UW) at Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), one of the oldest and most successful technology transfer offices in the nation focused on advancing transformative discoveries to the marketplace. GreenBay Technologies develops products that use machine learning and big data technologies to automate complex data management tasks such as entity and schema matching. Why Prepping For the Automation Revolution Can't Leave Out Women Workers
As it rages, the automation debate has tended to center on men because they dominate in many of the low-wage occupations that are at a high (and high-profile) risk of replacement, like driving and factory work. But according to a report released Wednesday by the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR)--the first known comprehensive analysis of how automation will affect U.S. workers differently based on their gender--women could have even more at stake. In the U.S. labor market, women are overrepresented in other high-risk occupations that involve routine data work easily disrupted by AI, like secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and information clerks. They're also overrepresented in jobs like child care, elder care, and education--ones that are comparatively "safe" from automation, but that may have lower salaries and few benefits. While women make up only half of the labor force, researchers found that they make up 58 percent of the workers at the highest risk of automation.
UK artificial intelligence investment reaches record levels
UK artificial intelligence investment has reached record highs. Investment in AI technology grew almost six-fold from 2014 to 2018, with UK AI scaleups raising almost double that of France, Germany and the rest of Europe combined last year. As AI becomes more pervasive, 2019 is set to be another year of record funding growth for AI in the UK, building on four years of consecutive growth. In the first six months of this year, AI funding in the UK has already surpassed 2018's figures -- AI investment reached $1,021,642,595 in 2018 in the UK, but has already reached $1,063,012,777 in the first six months of 2019 (Source: Crunchbase). Based on these figures, the UK is currently third in the world for raising investment in AI, behind only China and the US and second in the world (behind the US) for the number of AI companies in operation during 2019 (Source: Crunchbase).
