Using artificial intelligence to automate sea-ice charting
Reliable maps of sea-ice conditions and forecasts are of vital importance for maritime safety, safe navigation and planning. The continued retreating and thinning of Arctic sea ice calls for a more effective way of producing detailed and timely ice information--which is where artificial intelligence comes in. Manual ice-charting from multi-sensor satellite data has been used for years, but it is time-consuming because of the vast area of the Arctic Ocean. In order to provide relevant ice data, there is a need for automated ice observations from satellite data, to integrate into ice forecast models. In response to this, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and Technical University of Denmark have initiated the project Automated Sea Ice Products (ASIP) – funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark.

Pegasystems Inc announced the results of a global survey that found robotic process automation (RPA) and robotic desktop automation (RDA) to be highly effective in streamlining work – though achieving and maintaining those results isn't as simple as it seems. RPA has become a buzzworthy solution for organizations under pressure to modernize their legacy IT infrastructure and stay competitive. Gartner recently reported that "RPA software revenue grew 63.1 percent in 2018 to $846 million, making it the fastest-growing segment of the global enterprise software market." To find out if robotic automation lives up to the hype, Pega polled more than 500 decision makers from global businesses in a mix of industries currently using RPA and/or RDA. The survey found most respondents gain significant value from automating their operations with bots.

This document presents the contributions presented at the first internal workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI), organized by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. This workshop was held on 23rd May at the premises of the JRC in Ispra (Italy), with video-conference to all JRC's sites. The workshop aimed to gather JRC specialists on AI to share their experience, to identify opportunities for meeting the EC demands on AI, and explore synergies among different JRC's working groups on AI. The full-day session workshop was organized around three main topical strands entitled Policy support, New Initiatives and Technology Development. Contributions covered a wide range of areas, including applications of AI to Cybersecurity, Transport, Environment, Health and other specific issues.
McDonald's doubles down on AI: Firm acquires voice-tech startup to improve its interactive menus
Fast food chain McDonald's has made yet another push into the world of automation. The company on Tuesday revealed it is acquiring conversational technology startup Apprente with a plan to integrate its systems with services such as drive-thru menus, self-order kiosks, and the mobile app. It comes just months after the fast food giant began rolling out AI-powered menus at hundreds of its locations across the United States, using the technology to make more precise menu suggestions. McDonald's on Tuesday revealed it is acquiring conversational technology startup Apprente with a plan to integrate its systems with services such as drive-thru menus, self-order kiosks, and the mobile app McDonald's President and CEO Steve Easterbrook said the latest acquisition will make it'simpler and even more enjoyable for crew members to serve guests.' Back in March the company acquired Israeli digital startup Dynamic Yield with similar plans to improve the customer experience using AI. Its AI menus can suggest items based on the time of day, weather or recent trends, like showing a hashbrown alongside a cheeseburger - a combination that recently went viral on Reddit.

One of the most notorious invasive species around, the lionfish, is known for its voracious appetite and can literally eat its competitors out of an ecosystem. And that's what the striking fish is doing, feasting its way through waters that stretch from the Gulf of Mexico to the Eastern Seaboard. Now, scientists and startups are crafting methods for capturing and killing the hungry invaders. But while these new ideas show promise, tried-and-true spearfishing seems to be the most effective way to eradicate lionfish, scientists told Live Science. "It's actually hard to describe how a lionfish eats because they do it in a split second," said Kristen Dahl, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Florida.

But she and other women involved in organizing it felt that the city, famed for its strip clubs, was unsuitable. Among the first achievements of the organizing committee which that year was all-female was moving the conference to Seattle in Washington. The committee had even bigger ambitions for the male-skewed meeting. Often, people say there arent any women speaking because there arent any out there, so we thought, Lets show them a tonne of women and that might change things, she says.
New AI technology can help diagnose heart attacks
An algorithm combining high sensitive troponin testing with personal details can help A&E doctors better determine whether patients are having a heart attack, according to new research. The study, published in medical journal Circulation today, used Abbott's algorithm on 11,000 patients from the UK, the US, Germany, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand, to see whether it could help deliver faster and more accurate evidence as to whether patients were suffering from a heart attack. Developed using machine learning – a branch of artificial intelligence – the algorithm uses a high sensitivity troponin-I blood test, and the time it was taken, to assess the patient's blood troponin protein levels, combining the results with personal details, such as age and sex, to deliver a bespoke assessment. It is thought this will help get around two current obstacles in heart attack diagnoses. The first is that women are currently at greater risk of misdiagnosis, because their troponin protein levels can be lower than those of men, and international guidelines for the use high sensitive troponin tests do not always account for sex in results.

Researchers have developed a heart'fingerprint' to tailor personalised treatment for people at high risk of deadly heart attack. Technology developed using artificial intelligence (AI) could identify people at high risk of a fatal heart attack at least five years before it strikes, according to new research funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF). The findings are being presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Paris and published in the European Heart Journal. Researchers at the University of Oxford have developed a new biomarker, or'fingerprint', called the fat radiomic profile (FRP), using machine learning. The fingerprint detects biological red flags in the perivascular space lining blood vessels which supply blood to the heart.
