BENGALURU: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier announced the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an elective for students in classes 9 to 12. The curriculum for the subject is now being developed from scratch by a team from IBM India along with members of its global team and other subject experts. To begin with, IBM will conduct a pilot project in 1,000 schools in Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad and Chennai, before finalising the curriculum and embedding it in the CBSE curriculum from the next academic year. The pilot is being launched in Delhi on Wednesday. The project will start with creating awareness for school principals, followed by a two-and-a half day training of teachers on the foundational skills for the subject.

Shukun Technology, a startup founded two years ago in Beijing that uses artificial intelligence to diagnose heart disease, is developing a technology that could help tackle one of China's most urgent medical problems: a shortage of doctors to treat a rapidly growing population of older, sicker people. Shukun uses software, a database of millions of images of healthy and diseased hearts and machine learning algorithms to make heart CT scans more accurate. The company hopes its product will help doctors diagnose a heart patient's condition and plan surgery faster than they can now. The company has raised $50 million from venture capitalists in mainland China and Hong Kong, including Morningside Venture Capital, Huagai Capital and China Creation Ventures.

In recent years, various governments, international organisations, civil society groups and technology companies have issued documents outlining their principles around the development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Yet, the world appears to be no closer to a universal set of AI norms. This brief suggests a rethinking of how AI norms should be formulated and outlines key lessons. First, technology firms reflect certain human biases that do not do justice to their global consumer base and make them unsuitable to lead the setting of AI principles. Second, while norms are ambiguous by design, the misuse of this ambiguity by actors to justify rights violations sets a dangerous precedent. Third, no single regulation can account for the consequences of the same AI application deployed in different contexts.

Turing Award, will present his Turing Award Lecture, "Deep Learning for AI," at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum on September 23 in Heidelberg, Germany. Bengio is a professor at the University of Montreal and Scientific Director at Mila, Quebec's Artificial Intelligence Institute. He received the 2018 ACM A.M. Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton, VP and Engineering Fellow of Google, and Yann LeCun, VP and Chief AI Scientist at Facebook. Bengio, Hinton and LeCun were recognized for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that have made deep neural networks a critical component of computing.

If artificial intelligence came to life today and set up a facebook profile, it would have a relationship with all of us, and our relationship status would be "It's Complicated". Although we don't see the motivation or reasoning behind the algorithms we spend so much time with, they are doing great things for us, and so we love them. Unfortunately, we don't necessarily understand them or how they will change us. By we, I don't just mean the general public. I mean software developers, their managers, and even machine learning engineers. AI does some things well and some things poorly, but on balance, the benefits exceed the costs of having an algorithm making decisions.
