Talos,: was it a Greek myth equivalent of robotics or AI? The history of AI begins with a myth and just as with many modern AI systems, it concerned defence. According to Greek mythology, Talos was a giant automaton made of bronze, created by the god Hephaestus, for the purpose of guarding the island of Crete by throwing stones at passing ships. Just as many experts in AI today accuse companies of claiming to have AI when in fact they don't, the second well known example of AI was a lie. The Turk was supposed to be a mechanical device for playing chess, created by Wolfgang von Kempelen, trying to impress Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1769.

We are SkyPyre Studios, an indie game development & design studio located in Ottawa, Canada. I'm part of a larger U.S. government project that is working on developing ways to detect images and videos that have been manipulated. My team's work, though, is to play the role of the bad guy. We develop increasingly devious, and convincing, ways to generate fakes -- in hopes of giving other researchers a good challenge when they're testing their detection methods. For the past three years, we've been having a bit of fun dreaming up new ways to try to change the meaning of images and video. We've created some scenarios ourselves, but we've also had plenty of inspiration from current events and circumstances of actual bad guys trying to twist public opinion.

This past weekend, data visualization, and specifically data visualization around depicting uncertainty, got a bit of national attention. As someone who designs with data and uncertainty, this was very exciting to me (not to mention it gave me a way to talk to my family about what I do!) On Wednesday President Trump spoke in front of reporters holding up a map of the approaching Hurricane Dorian. The reason this became a news items on its own is that the map had been altered from its original form. A map of the gulf coast that originally had a cone-shaped graphic mapping the potential path of the hurricane now had a new addition -- an extra bulbous bump. The new addition was immediately suspicious, and there are a couple of obvious reasons why.

McDonald's (MCD) is one of the oldest and most popular fast food restaurant chains in the world and as with any other establishments that have been around as long, the company is constantly seeking ways to improve its service and the experience it gives customers. The 79-year-old restaurant has now announced the acquisition of Apprente, in a bid to improve its service using automated voice commands. Founded in 2017, Apprente is a Silicon Valley startup which focuses on the use of artificial intelligence to analyze and improve orders placed via a drive-through. Proper use of this technology could significantly improve McDonald's service by reducing service time considerably. If all goes according to plan, McDonald's hopes to also apply Apprente's technology to orders placed using the company's mobile app as well as its order kiosks.

Several years ago, a trio of entrepreneurs, Peter Muzzonigro, Johnny Wong, and Bryan Baum -- the last of whom sold his first two companies (Blue Vision Labs and Represent.com) After spending the better part of months developing a solution -- Panoramic -- and quietly launching it in 2018, they embarked on an ambitious customer acquisition strategy, which netted them the business of brands including Sweetgreen, Sony Home Entertainment, TruConnect, MGM, Blumhouse Productions, and Cha Cha Matcha. Panoramic today emerged from stealth with $35 million in funding from TPG Growth's Affinity Group and others, which Muzzonigro said will be used to grow existing markets (chiefly entertainment, ecommerce, technology, quick-service restaurants, and digital media agencies), deepen brand and agency partnerships, and invest in AI-powered solutions designed for marketing analytics. "Marketers were expected to map and model their own data -- effectively needing to understand how to code to understand the value of their data," said Muzzonigro. "Panoramic solves that problem by providing marketers with a specially built platform that requires no coding and allows time-to-value to occur in days or weeks versus months." Panoramic's approach combines automation with the domain knowledge of in-house data scientists and analysts, enabling marketers to build customized and holistic dashboards for data analysis, benchmarking, and more.

Police in China don't have to pull drivers over to warn them of traffic offenses -- now they can just bark orders from hovering drones. On Friday, state broadcaster CCTV aired footage of traffic police using a drone to tell a scooter rider to put on his helmet, according to a newly published South China Morning Post story. After realizing the disembodied voice was speaking to him, the rider sheepishly complied. SCMP reported that within four hours, the clip garnered 34 million views on the Twitter-like Chinese site Weibo, with most social media users appearing to find it humorous. That response could indicate that people in China are becoming -- or, perhaps, already are -- desensitized to the nation's Big Brother-esque surveillance efforts.
