The Unexpected Consequences of Big Data
Big Data is the unexpected resource bonanza of the current century. Moore's Law driven advances in computing power, the rise of cheap storage and advances in algorithm design have enabled the capture, storage, and processing of many types of data previously that were unavailable for use in computing systems. Documents, email, text messages, audio files, and images are now able to transform into a usable digital format for use by analysis systems, especially artificial intelligence. The AI systems can scan massive amounts of data and find both patterns and anomalies that were previously unthinkable and do so in a timeframe that was unimaginable. While most of the uses of Big Data have been coupled with AI/machine learning algorithms so companies and understand their customer's choices and improve their overall experience (think about recommendation engines, chatbots, navigation apps and digital assistants among others) there are uses that are truly industry transforming.

Dr. Mirhaji was the former director of the Center for Biosecurity and Public Health Informatics Research at the University of Texas at Houston where he developed clinical text understanding, semantic information integration, and EMR interoperability solutions, for public health and disaster preparedness. He is an inventor with several patents covering information integration, biomedical vocabularies and taxonomy services, clinical text understanding and natural language processing, electronic data capture, and knowledge-based information retrieval. Using Machine Learning In Fabs
Amid the shift towards more complex chips at advanced nodes, many chipmakers are exploring or turning to advanced forms of machine learning to help solve some big challenges in IC production. A subset of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, uses advanced algorithms in systems to recognize patterns in data as well as to learn and make predictions about the information. In the fab, machine learning promises to provide faster and more accurate results in select areas, such as finding and classifying defects in chips. Machine learning also is used in other process steps, but there are still some challenges to deploy it. It has been used in computing and other fields for decades. It first appeared in semiconductor production in the 1990s. Some saw it as a way to help automate the steps for some manually-driven fab equipment. Over time, machine learning has made staggering progress in computing and elsewhere.

Evidence is being gathered on U.S. big tech companies as the European Commission prepares for new leadership, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday (Sept. Within 100 days of taking office on Nov. 1, President-elect Ursula von der Leyen and her team indicate there will be new laws governing artificial intelligence (AI) and how tech companies like Facebook use big data. Big tech investigations were already initiated by commissioner Margrethe Vestager and could end with multimillion-dollar fines. Facebook and Amazon deny wrongdoing. Alphabet's Google has already been hit with $9.4 billion in fines resulting from three separate EU investigations, and a fourth is underway.

Viral App Highlights the Insensitive Logic of a System at the Heart of the Current AI Boom
The tool, called ImageNet Roulette, detects human faces in any uploaded photo and assign them labels using ImageNet, an academic training set with millions of pictures depicting almost anything imaginable, and WordNet, the corresponding text tags. As viral examples on Twitter have shown, the results of this process are more often than not completely useless--nonsensical at best and racist or otherwise offensive at worst. In some cases, it would label black men as "offenders" or "wrongdoers," while other times it would spit out racial slurs against Asians or outdated and offensive terms for black people.
