Artificial intelligence could predict El Niño up to 18 months in advance

The dreaded El Niño strikes the globe every 2 to 7 years. As warm waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean shift eastward and trade winds weaken, the weather pattern ripples through the atmosphere, causing drought in southern Africa, wildfires in South America, and flooding on North America's Pacific coast. Climate scientists have struggled to predict El Niño events more than 1 year in advance, but artificial intelligence (AI) can now extend forecasts to 18 months, according to a new study. The work could help people in threatened regions better prepare for droughts and floods, for example by choosing which crops to plant, says William Hsieh, a retired climate scientist in Victoria, Canada, who worked on early El Niño forecasts but who was not involved in the current study. Longer forecasts could have "large economic benefits," he says.

Today's specialty and commercial insurance underwriters face an overwhelming number of challenges. AXIS Capital Senior Data Scientist Min Yu believes artificial intelligence (AI) will transform the specialty and commercial insurance underwriting from a "detect and repair" mode to "predict and prevent" mode. In her talk on Machine Learning to Specialty Insurance Underwriting, Yu outlined the AI process as follows: receive a submission, retrieve data, analyze risk, automate quote and quick binding. Manual underwriting would be mainly used for review, or on complicated or emerging risks.

However, large parts of Africa with populations prone to disasters still remain unmapped -- 60% of the 30 million square kilometers.

Huawei eyes AI prowess, invests in compute power ZDNet

The world needs more computing power and Huawei wants to build the architectures needed to answer the call, spanning processors, networks, devices, and cloud services. It also believes artificial intelligence (AI) will fuel much of this need and is gearing up a "full stack" portfolio to tap the growing enterprise demand. Statistical computing, which is needed in dealing with undefinable tasks such as voice and image recognition, will soon become mainstream and Huawei believes AI computing, five years from now, will account for more than 80% of computing power used worldwide. At the Chinese tech vendor's annual Connect conference Wednesday, deputy chairman Ken Hu noted that training AI algorithms requires a metric ton of computing power, while other more complex applications such as autonomous driving and weather forecasting requires even more compute power. Touting its low latency and high speeds, Ericsson says 5G can introduce a multitude of new applications for businesses and give telcos the cost efficiencies they seek, but the persistent controversy over cybersecurity--specifically involving Huawei--is leading to uncertainty and a general slowdown in the market.

AIVI Act: Illinois Leading the Way on AI Regulation

Illinois, known as a national test bed for regulation, has struck again in an unlikely area; the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in job interviews. On 11 August, Democratic Governor JB Pritzker signed the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act (AIVI Act) into law. Illinois is now the first state to regulate the use of algorithms (interview bots) and other forms of AI to analyse applicants during video interviews from the beginning of 2020. AI in video interviews is a growing trend in hiring practices across the US. Companies rely on video interviews to reduce the stages of these processes to get a sense for candidates, who are asked to answer questions and present themselves just as they would in an in-person interview. Companies typically use the services of third-party platforms such as Hire Vue to conduct video interviews.


How AI/ML Could Return Manufacturing Prowess Back to US

I grew up in a small manufacturing town in Northeast Iowa. The factory in my hometown made tractors (no surprise given that it was Iowa), but eventually the economics of cheap foreign labor and an interconnected global economy caught up with that factory – as it did with many US-based manufacturers – and soon the factory closed, and many people were laid off. But the technology world continues to evolve – especially with respect to IoT, Data Science and AI/ML – and so comes an opportunity for manufacturing to make a big return to the US. However, tomorrow's manufacturing battles won't be fought with cheap labor. In fact, measuring a country's manufacturing strength by the number of manufacturing jobs is fighting yesteryear's battle.
