According to UK Cancer Research Magazine, over 17 million cancer cases were diagnosed across the globe throughout 2018. Age and gender, two of the key facial attributes, play a very foundational role in social interactions, making age and gender estimation from a single face image an important task in intelligent applications, such as access control, human-computer interaction, law enforcement, marketing intelligence and visual surveillance, etc. Recently I came across Quividi which is an AI software application which is used to detect age and gender of users who passes by based on online face analyses and automatically starts playing advertisements based on the targeted audience. Another example could be AgeBot which is an Android App that determines your age from your photos using facial recognition.

A simple Google search of the term "artificial intelligence" yields about 630 million results, and AI continues to dominate the headlines and has even made its way into mainstream TV advertising.

However, in the past year, ever since the media woke up to the amazing world of AI, I have been receiving queries like: since AI is a new thing, will I find a job once I graduate? I've never seen an advert for an AI expert, etc. In the past decades, and especially in the past year in my role as a member of the Malta.AI taskforce, I have met thousands of people who might have heard about AI, are probably using it extensively, but have no clue that they're using it or even what it is.

In January-March 2019 The Economist Intelligence Unit, on behalf of Temenos, surveyed 405 global banking executives on the changes they see taking place in their industry to 2020 and 2025, their organisational response, and the longer-term impact on their strategic development. This, the sixth iteration of the retail banking survey, focuses on how these retail banks are incorporating and advancing technology delivery for their current and future customers. The survey is part of a global research programme on retail banking, which includes in-depth interviews with retail banks, fintechs and regulators from North America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The survey respondents were geographically diverse: 25% were drawn from Europe, 25% from Asia-Pacific, 18% from North America, 16% from Africa and the Middle East, and 16% from Latin America. Respondents came from a variety of job functions: marketing and sales (18%), IT (15%), and customer service and finance each accounted for about one in ten respondents (9% and 10% respectively).

A collaborative group that includes Salesforce, Deloitte, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the United Kingdom Office of AI today introduced guidelines for government officials to procure artificial intelligence systems. The guidelines that counsel vendors to ask particular questions before selling their AI to government agencies is being called by the WEF the first for any national government worldwide. In the works for about 10 months, the guidelines made by the previously mentioned organizations were brought together by the WEF's Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its AI and ML team. The Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution hosts fellows from nations around the world to focus on major initiatives. Governments the world over are increasingly using AI to do things like predict the needs of citizens, help with health care screening, or do things in criminal justice like power predictive policing, track suspects with facial recognition, or determine if people deserve pretrial bail hearings.

Saudi officials display what they claim are Iranian cruise missiles and drones used in the attack on Saudi Arabia's oil industry; Benjamin Hall reports from Jerusalem. The attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil fields will drive a massive increase in the need for perimeter security gear, according to a new report. The report, released by IHS Markit earlier this week, says that knowing where drones are at all times is a new reality. While benign drones must be tracked, it is the malicious ones that must be stopped. "Drone attacks are relatively cheap and easy to initiate but can inflict major damage," IHS Markit analyst Oliver Philippou wrote in the note.
