Creepy and lifelike deepfake videos could be commonplace 'within six months', claims expert

Deepfake videos could be commonplace and found across the media and online platforms within six months, according to a leading expert. The idea of the videos is to look completely real and show people doing things they never did. These are created by complex computing and artificial intelligence and have caused outrage recently. Moving images can be created from just a single image of a person and US politician Nancy Pelosi, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and even the Mona Lisa have been used in the convincing clips already. The video that kicked off the concern last month was a doctored video of Nancy Pelosi (pictured), the speaker of the US House of Representatives.


Amazon to Retrain a Third of Its U.S. Workforce

Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -1.50% is the latest example of a large employer committing to help its workers gain new skills. The online retailer said Thursday it plans to spend $700 million over about six years to retrain a third of its U.S. workforce as automation, machine learning and other technology upends the way many of its employees do their jobs. Companies as varied as AT&T Inc., Walmart Inc., WMT -0.11% JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Accenture ACN -0.81% PLC have embarked on efforts to prepare workers for new roles. At a time of historically low unemployment, coupled with rapid digital transformation that requires high-tech job skills, more U.S. companies said they want to help their employees transition to new positions--and they have their bottom line squarely in focus. Many have concluded that they must coach existing staff to take on different types of work, or face a dire talent shortage, said Ryan Carson, founder and chief executive of Treehouse, a firm that pairs tech apprentices, often from underrepresented groups, with employers and helps train them.

Most sci-fi fans will think of Terminator when they hear of killer robots. In the classic film series, a rogue military AI called Skynet gained self-awareness after spreading to millions of servers around the world. Concluding that humans would attempt to shut it down, Skynet sought to exterminate all of mankind in the interest of self-preservation. While it was once just a popcorn flick, Terminator now offers a dire warning of what could be if precautions are not taken.


IBM Names 5 Finalists in 2019 Call for Code Challenge

AsTeR (Europe) โ€“ During natural disasters, emergency call centers are overwhelmed and lack the human resources to deal with the sudden uptick in calls. Project AsTeR helps prioritize these calls based on their level of emergency. Instead of being directly connected to an operator, victims are asked to briefly explain their emergency over the phone. Their responses are then converted to text and analyzed to extract key information, such as the number of victims, type of emergency and location. AsTeR then provides first responders with a map identifying areas with high levels of emergency based on the number of people involved and the type of injuries.

KT and WeDo Technologies Collaborate on Using Artificial Intelligence to Detect Fraud

AI-IRSF is an AI system that prevents a fraud that involves hacking of IP-PBX (IP telephony exchange) to generate illegal calls to international numbers. With this Cooperation Agreement, KT will develop and supply more AI based FMS modules to integrate with WeDo's Fraud and Risk Management system. Additional AI based modules will also run on the WeDo's system, and the modular capability of RAID will allow CSPs to choose from different fraud detection models for their market similar to how one chooses applications from a smartphone app store. The open architecture of RAID will also allow other CSPs to develop their own models as well. WeDo Technologies is part of the Mobileum group, a leading enterprise software and analytics company in roaming, security, fraud and risk management serving more than 700 telecommunication providers in more than 180 countries.
