BENGALURU: At least 10 new AI-based jobs are being created for every 100 positions made redundant in traditional technology, experts in the field have said. However, the new roles are not being created as quickly as the positions that are eliminated and companies are increasingly training talent to fill the gap in artificial intelligence skills. This was the key takeaway from ET's recent conversation on Technology Talent Equilibrium with Sridhar Mitta, founder of digital technology services provider NextWealth Entrepreneurs; Prakash Mallya, the head of Intel India, and Supriyo Das, vice-president, Wipro Technologies. "If 100 jobs are cut, 10 jobs are created. The people who are losing jobs have different skills, and they're going away. People are getting new jobs on different skillsets," Mitta said.

Artificial Intelligence predicts effectiveness of antidepressants in patients: Study
Houston: Researchers use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify patterns of brain activity that make people less responsive to certain antidepressants. In two studies, one published in the journal American Journal of Psychiatry and another in Nature Human Behavior, the scientists showed they could use imaging of a patient's brain to decide whether a medication is likely to be effective. Both the studies include the latest findings from a large national trial -- EMBARC -- intended to establish objective strategies to treat mood disorders based on biology, and minimize the prescription of treatments in a trial and error fashion. The researchers, including those from UT Southwestern's Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care in the US, plan to develop a range of tests such as brain imaging and blood analyses to improve the odds of finding the best treatment for mood disorders. "We need to end the guessing game and find objective measures for prescribing interventions that will work," said Madhukar Trivedi, who oversees EMBARC.

Singapore tops list of cities most ready for AI disruption
Singapore is the city most prepared for the next wave of technology disruption that will be brought about by artificial intelligence (AI), according to a new index on AI readiness that ranks 105 global cities. The technique that allows machines to learn from enormous sets of data is expected to bring new conveniences in modern living and economic benefits. But there is the risk of jobs being displaced, people's privacy being exposed and inequality being perpetuated through AI being fed biased data, with cities at various stages of readiness for the new future. In determining how prepared global cities are for this disrupted future, New York-based research outfit Oliver Wyman Forum's inaugural Global Cities AI Disruption Index, released yesterday, scored cities on 31 metrics across four broad categories: vision, activation ability, asset base and growth trajectory. Singapore received the best overall score of 75.8, bolstered by its strong performance in the vision category, which measures the presence of plans to respond to technology changes and plans to upgrade labour skills and infrastructure such as mobile networks.
