Eye charts date back to the middle of the 19th century, and, over the ensuing decades, have changed relatively little. Many optometrists and ophthalmologists still gauge patients' vision by having them read rows of letters or numbers. Lu, associate provost and chief scientist at New York University Shanghai and a professor in the university's Center for Neural Science and psychology department, thinks these charts continue to have value, but are too imprecise for measuring vision loss or other changes in vision.
Artificial Intelligence Improves Control of Prosthetic Hands
Scientists from the University of Texas at Dallas announced a groundbreaking new approach for improving control of prosthetics with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) at the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Measurement and Control in Robotics Symposium this month. The research findings show a huge leap forward in the goal of fully end-to-end optimization of electromyography (EMG) controlled prosthetic hands. There are more than 40 million amputees across the globe, according to the World Health Organization. Recent advances in prosthetic hand and limb technology have greatly improved the quality of life for upper-limb amputees. However, gaps remain in the control of prosthetic hands, specifically in using naturally generated electric signals from the patient's muscles.

Trint, the AI-powered transcription service, closes $4.5M Series A – TechCrunch
Trint, the London-based transcription startup founded by Emmy-winning journalist Jeff Kofman, has raised $4.5 million in Series A funding. The round includes follow-on investment from Horizons Lab, the Hong Kong-based seed fund operated by the managers of Horizons Ventures, with participation from TechNexus, and The Associated Press. It brings total funding for Trint to $7.8 million since the company's founding in December 2014. Original backers include Google Digital News Innovation Fund and the Knight Enterprise Fund. Counting some of the world's largest media organizations as customers -- including The Associated Press, Vice News, The Washington Post and Der Spiegel -- Trint uses machine learning and speech-to-text technology to automate transcribing, which is a significant pain-point for journalists and other content producers, such as video makers.

The future of work will be far less scary when there's more women in AI
While scholarship on the topic is getting increasingly nuanced, you're still likely to confront dire warnings about how smart machines are coming to take our jobs. Tesla and Space X CEO Elon Musk says mass automation is "the scariest problem" facing society because "what's going to happen is robots will be able to do everything better than us … I mean all of us." AI pioneer and venture capitalist Kai-Fu Lee believes that the technology could potentially eliminate 40% of existing jobs within the next 15 years. Beyond their inherent pessimism, these kinds predictions have something in common: almost all of them come from men. The vast majority of people funding AI, working on AI, commenting on AI, teaching AI, and starting businesses involving AI are men, what Google researcher Margaret Mitchell calls "a sea of dudes."
