The NSA Is Running a Satellite Hacking Experiment
Researchers at the National Security Agency are using artificial intelligence to characterize strange behaviors in small satellites to understand if they've secretly been brought under adversarial control. "We're looking at a way to characterize telemetry data so that as we deploy new satellites, we can make adjustments," said Aaron Ferguson, the technical director of the encryption solutions office of NSA's Capabilities Directorate, said at a Defense One event on Tuesday. "Now, if you talk to a variety of analysts, and I have at NASA, they'll say, 'Oh, we've got this under control. We checked the data twice, three times,' Ferguson said. "But we really don't know, because there is so much data that they really don't know if something is going wrong. They'll say, 'It's just orbital debris that bumped into the satellite and knocked it off its trajectory."

New York is always an exciting, energetic city to visit and ... was made even more so as I attended the (recent) 'HPC & AI on Wall Street' conference, which HPCWire are now championing. It was well worth the train ride from Boston and interesting to see the varied mix of attendees present and hear how HPC and AI is evolving in the world of finance. All sectors of the financial services industry (FSI) were represented at the conference from traditional, old school banks to venture capital firms, fintechs and hedge funds. AI adoptions varied from integrating machine learning into existing applications and processes to mining unearthly amounts of market data for a trading edge. My first lesson was there is a dichotomy between too much data volume and insufficient data context within this community. Don't worry the bank account and market value data is as solid as always.
Oracle launches AI voice assistant for its business app suite
Oracle has added AI voice commands to its Digital Assistant, offering users an alternative way to interact with its various business apps. The company on Tuesday also announced that the bot will integrate with Microsoft's work stream collaboration platform, Teams. Oracle's Digital Assistant was launched last year as an interface to its portfolio of enterprise software applications, which includes sales, marketing and human resource tools. The virtual assistant uses AI techniques such as machine learning and natural language processing and understanding to interpret user intent; it's designed to automate processes such as expense approvals and meeting re-schedules. The Digital Assistant was initially targeted at text interactions and embedded in various communication and collaboration tools such as Slack, WeChat and Facebook Messenger, as well as user websites and as a standalone mobile app.

Officials with U.S. Special Operations Command are experimenting with artificial intelligence and machine learning to determine whether it's possible to highlight the qualities that distinguish an ideal operator. This summer, officials began collecting and assessing a wide swath of data regarding candidates for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, said David Spirk, SOCOM's chief data officer. EY today announced it is coming together with the Partnership on AI, a multistakeholder not-for-profit corporation formed to better understand the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement around AI's impact on people and society. This decision reflects the commitment of EY to collaborate with the public and private sectors, civil society, academia and beyond, not only to establish governance and controls necessary for building and maintaining trust in AI systems, but also to help ensure the meaningful technological advancements of AI will have a positive impact. Earlier this month, EY established the first cross-disciplinary EY AI Advisory Board to develop rigorous approaches to addressing the ethical challenges surrounding emerging technologies and help implement strategies for building trusted AI systems. Led by Nigel Duffy, EY Global Artificial Intelligence Leader, the EY AI Advisory Board consists of four academic professionals who are experienced in computer science, technology and ethics, and possess a range of diverse knowledge on the subject matter. Duffy and other EY leaders will meet with the board regularly, with the first meeting taking place in London next month.
