Artificial intelligence (AI) presents numerous opportunities to benefit society; however, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OIPC), together with numerous international counterparts, have been urging the adoption of national strategies to ensure the responsible use of AI and mitigate the risks to privacy and data associated with same. Recognizing that AI poses challenges to privacy, data protection and human rights, the Declaration on Ethics and Data Protection in Artificial Intelligence was adopted at the 40th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. This Declaration aims to "preserve human rights in the development of artificial intelligence" by endorsing the following six guiding principles: While the OIPC continues to monitor AI developments in Canada and internationally, the Government of Canada has also been active in addressing potential issues arising from the use of such technologies. For example, Canada is among the first countries to announce a national strategy for AI. The Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, a $125-million investment in AI, was announced in the 2017 Federal Budget, with a main objective of supporting research on AI.

Eureka Robotics unveils robot with the precision and dexterity of a human hand
Eureka Robotics has unveiled Archimedes, a new robot capable of picking up delicate optical lenses and mirrors with the care and precision of a human hand. A robotics technology start-up from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), Eureka says Archimedes can slot lenses and mirrors of different sizes into a custom loading tray to prepare them for coating. Archimedes features a six-axis robot arm controlled by algorithms that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to plan its motion and how much force to exert in its grip, creating a system that can mimic the dexterity of human fingers and the visual acuity of human eyes. According to Eureka, Archimedes differentiates itself from other robots currently used in the industry because it has both high accuracy and high agility, whereas other robots tend to have one or the other. Eureka says Archimedes is one of the first robots with High Accuracy - High Agility (HA-HA) to be deployed on the manufacturing floor.
Researchers find way to harness AI creativity
Researchers have found a way to marry human creativity and artificial intelligence (AI) creativity to dramatically boost the performance of deep learning. A team led by Alexander Wong, a Canada Research Chair in the area of AI and a professor of systems design engineering at the University of Waterloo, developed a new type of compact family of neural networks that could run on smartphones, tablets, and other embedded and mobile devices. The networks, called AttoNets, are being used for image classification and object segmentation, but can also act as the building blocks for video action recognition, video pose estimation, image generation, and other visual perception tasks. "The problem with current neural networks is they are being built by hand and incredibly large and complex and difficult to run in any real-world situation," said Wong, who also co-founded a startup named DarwinAI to commercialize the technology. "These on-the-edge networks are small and agile and could have huge implications for the automotive, aerospace, agriculture, finance, and consumer electronics sectors."

You still need the experienced surgeon out there to make sure that everything is being done right but, now, instead of human hands, you can have a very precise machine that'll be doing the job for you. The former Google project could soon unleash an autonomous taxi fleet without a human backup driver at the wheel. The email notes that customers who are matched with a fully driverless vehicle in its ride-hailing app will be notified so they won't be surprised to see an empty front seat when the car arrives.
