Using Neural Machine Translation for Multilingual Communication

#artificialintelligence

A new type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, called Neural Machine Translation (NMT), is quickly earning the attention of multilingual communities. This software is helping to expedite the translation process and has the potential to open government information to more non-English languages. In this session, Beth Flaherty will give a high-level overview of machine translation technology. We will discuss the evolution of machine translation (MT), how MT is used in the government, ways to "specialize" a language engine to a specific domain, calculation of return on investment (ROI), and the road ahead. We'll also show a live demo of the NMT software so that the audience can see the flexibility of use with this technology.

How to Secure Data Privacy While Growing Machine Learning - InformationWeek

#artificialintelligence

Data privacy is a huge topic right now for any companies using personal data, and recent legislative activities including the possibility of a new federal privacy law has brought it to the forefront. Consumer concerns are also growing with IBM reporting 78% believe a company's ability to keep their data private is very important. At the same time, machine learning improves products, delivering user benefits such as increased personalization, tailored experiences, and less time manually filling in forms. But machine learning requires data to train the system: without data, it can't function. So, businesses say they face a conundrum: how can they increase user privacy while still building products powered by machine learning? As the IT decision makers for their organizations, chief information officers must embrace the idea that privacy is not just an on/off switch where they either collect and use all or none of the data.

Computer-Assisted Judging Tested at Gymnastics World Championships

#artificialintelligence

Scanning and computer-assisted judging may safeguard against the pitfalls of human judging. On the eve of the 2019 gymnastics world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, the 527 participating athletes were asked to consent to a scan by multiple laser sensors to create a precise, three-dimensional image of their bodies. Those images, in turn, are being used to improve the accuracy of a so-called "judging support system," developed by Japanese IT giant Fujitsu, that's being used for the first time in the competition. The expectation, pending approval by the International Olympic Committee, is that the technology -- in which artificial intelligence helps human judges score gymnastics routines -- will be used at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And it may presage the day when computers replace human judges entirely in the largely subjective sport, although that is not the plan "for now," officials said.

Reconnecting Brain and Spine, AI Can Make Paralysed Patients Move Analytics Insight

#artificialintelligence

Intel and Brown University have started their work in a DARPA-funded Intelligent Spine Interface Project. The project aims at employing AI technology to restore movement and bladder control for patients paralyzed by critical spinal cord injuries. DARPA or Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency is an agency of the US Department of Defence. The agency is responsible for the development of emerging technologies for military-purpose use. The corporate vice-president and general manager of the AI Products Group, Intel Group, Naveen Rao said, "As a Ph.D. student at Brown, I investigated how to interface the brain with machines as an application. Now at Intel, we are combining our AI expertise with Brown University's cutting-edge medical research to help solve a critical medical problem: how to reconnect the brain and spine after a major spinal injury."

Doctor diagnosed with terminal motor neurone disease hopes to become world's first cyborg

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A scientist who is dying from a muscle wasting disease is taking drastic steps in his bid to become the world's first true cyborg. Dr Peter Scott-Morgan, 61, from Torquay, Devon, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease two years ago and told it would only take until this year to kill him. But instead of accepting his fate he decided to challenge what it meant to be human and now hopes to create Peter 2.0. He is gradually replacing his bodily functions with machinery – an electric wheelchair now enables to him to be upright, sitting or laid down; he has banked his voice on a computer and had his voicebox removed; and is fed through a tube and has a catheter and colostomy bag attached so he doesn't eat or excrete. Dr Scott-Morgan shared the photo on social media with the caption: 'This is my last post as Peter 1.0.

Augere Medical

#artificialintelligence

Simula Research Laboratory in Norway has been at the forefront of AI research on gastroenterology lesion detection for more than five years. At Augere Medical, we develop products to help save lives. Every year, more than 4 200 new cases of colon cancer are found in Norway and 1 500 men and women die of this disease. When performing colonoscopies, the detection rate of polyps that can lead to cancer varies by more than 30 %, depending on the experience of the physician. In our research, we have developed artificial intelligence models to help physicians find the overlooked polyps and improve the average quality of the examinations towards the best doctors.
