The Future of AI in Business - Featuring Gurucul Commentary

#artificialintelligence

AI has continued to rapidly advance. With intelligent tools now available to businesses, how can enterprises transform their processes and insights using the latest AI techniques? If your business doesn't have an AI roadmap, it will suffer significant losses and damage your ability to compete. This is the stark message that many industry watchers are defining, as we enter a new era of AI. The headlines in the technology press that shout that AI is the next seismic shift in how your business will operate, need to be tempered with a reality check.

Princeton to take part in new U.S.-Swedish initiative on artificial intelligence and sustainability

#artificialintelligence

The intensive fires in the Amazon, the rapid melting of glaciers and ice sheets, and continued loss of biodiversity all illustrate that our planet is changing at a dangerous pace. At the same time, we are entering a period of unprecedented technological change. Artificial intelligence (AI) in combination with sensor technology and robotics are likely to change the way we all perceive and respond to social and environmental changes. How can we ensure that applications of artificial intelligence help us address these urgent challenges? On Oct. 15, Princeton University joined representatives from U.S. and Swedish academia, Swedish government, Google, Ericsson, USAID, U.N. Development Programme and U.N. Global Pulse, to launch a project that will explore how applications of artificial intelligence can help accelerate innovations in line with targets set by the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

Vespa maker reveals redesigned Gita cargo robot and it can be yours for some $3,000 next month

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A spherical, cargo robot that carries up to 40 pounds while trailing behind its owner can be yours for just $3,250. Vespa scooter maker has unveiled a redesign of its personal robot called Gita, which aims to free its human's hands so they can engage with others and enjoy activities. The ball-like machine stands about 26 inches and uses vision sensors to follow you -- and it will be available to the public next month. Sci-Fi Doesn't Have to Be Depressing: Welcome to Solarpunk www.ozy.com

#artificialintelligence

Imagine a scene, set in the future, where a child in Burning Manโ€“style punk clothing is standing in front of a yurt powered by solar panels. There weren't many books with scenes like that in 2014, when Sarena Ulibarri, an editor, first grew interested in a genre of science fiction that imagines a renewable and sustainable future. Welcome to solarpunk, a new genre within science fiction that is a reaction against the perceived pessimism of present-day sci-fi and hopes to bring optimistic stories about the future with the aim of encouraging people to change the present. The first book that explicitly identified as solarpunk was Solarpunk: Histรณrias ecolรณgicas e fantรกsticas em um mundo sustentรกvel (Solarpunk: Ecological and Fantastic Stories in a Sustainable World), a Brazilian book published in 2012. In 2014, author Adam Flynn wrote Solarpunk: Notes Toward a Manifesto.

UCSF, Nvidia partnership will develop new AI tools for radiology

#artificialintelligence

The University of California, San Francisco is employing Nvidia technology to help develop artificial intelligence tools for clinical radiology. WHY IT MATTERS The two organizations will work together on several AI projects, including brain tumor segmentation, liver segmentation and clinical deployment, leveraging Nvidia's Clara healthcare toolkit and the tech giant's DGX-2 AI system. Clara Medical Imaging provides developers with the tools to build, manage and deploy intelligent imaging workflows and instruments, while Clara Genomics addresses the growing size and complexity of genomics sequencing and analysis with accelerated and intelligent computing. Powered by DGX software and the scalable architecture of Nvidia NVSwitch, the DGX-2 is a 2 petaFLOPS system combining 16 interconnected graphical processing units โ€“ the system could help UCSF researchers significantly cut the time to train AI models. The number of images acquired during common studies such as MRI and CT scans has swelled in recent years corresponding with the growing number of patients being imaged.

Researchers design new material using artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Researchers at TU Delft have developed a new supercompressible but strong material without conducting any experimental tests at all, using only artificial intelligence (AI). "AI gives you a treasure map, and the scientist needs to find the treasure," says Miguel Bessa, first author of a publication on this subject in Advanced Materials on 14 October. Miguel Bessa, assistant professor in materials science and engineering at TU Delft, got the inspiration for this research project during his time at the California Institute of Technology. At a corner of the Space Structures Lab, he noticed a satellite structure that could open long solar sails from a very small package. He wondered if it would be possible to design a highly compressible yet strong material that could be compressed into a small fraction of its volume. "If this was possible, everyday objects such as bicycles, dinner tables and umbrellas could be folded into your pocket."
