YouTube to Sell Artists' Merchandise Underneath Videos - Search Engine Journal
YouTube has partnered with Merchbar to help artists sell official merchandise on their video pages. This collaboration allows artists with an official artist channel on YouTube to surface apparel, vinyl, and other forms of merchandise underneath their videos. Merchbar is currently home to over 1,000,000 items from 35,000 artists, making it one of the world's largest music merchandise aggregator providers. In an announcement, YouTube emphasizes how it's working to become a more valuable platform for artists: "This collaboration is another way YouTube is working with artists to become their most valuable platform, providing a single place to share their music, promote upcoming tour dates and showcase their own official merchandise to a global audience." YouTube is also becoming a stronger platform for fans of artists, as they now have direct access to official merchandise as they're watching the artists' latest music videos.

MXM development kits pave the way for AI -- Softei.com
General purpose graphics processor units (GPU) and edge AI computing platform provider, Aetina, has announced MXM development kits for embedded artificial intelligence (AI) and vision computing. The development tools include an MXM motherboard and an MXM to PCIe carrier that can help the developers to build a test system to confirm the performance specifications and verify peripheral devices early in the development stage. The kit includes the MXM motherboard, MH110, for evaluation. It supports Aetina MXM 3.0/3.1 type A/B modules and Intel's Core i7 CPUs, up to 7th Generation. A DDR4 SO-DIMM 2133MHz dual channel is expandable up to 32Gbyte, sufficient for entry-level AI, says the company.
Big data technique reveals previously unknown capabilities of common materials
When scientists and engineers discover new ways to optimize existing materials, it paves the way for innovations that make everything from our phones and computers to our medical equipment smaller, faster, and more efficient. According to research published today by Nature Journal NPG Asia Materials, a group of researchers--led by Edwin Fohtung, an associate professor of materials science and engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute--have found a new way to optimize nickel by unlocking properties that could enable numerous applications, from biosensors to quantum computing. They demonstrated that when nickel is made into extremely small, single-crystal nanowires and subjected to mechanical energy, a huge magnetic field is produced, a phenomenon known as giant magnetostriction. Inversely, if a magnetic field is applied to the material, then the atoms within will change shape. This displacement could be exploited to harvest energy.
Exploiting Deep Learning for Wind Power Forecasting Based on Big Data Analytics
Recently, power systems are facing the challenges of growing power demand, depleting fossil fuel and aggravating environmental pollution (caused by carbon emission from fossil fuel based power generation). The incorporation of alternative low carbon energy generation, i.e., Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), becomes crucial for energy systems. Effective Demand Side Management (DSM) and RES incorporation enable power systems to maintain demand, supply balance and optimize energy in an environmentally friendly manner. The wind power is a popular energy source because of its environmental and economical benefits. However, the uncertainty of wind power makes its incorporation in energy systems really difficult.

Reviving innovation in Europe
Europe a century ago was a global powerhouse of innovation, but it has started to lose its edge: today, despite some notable exceptions, many innovative companies are found elsewhere. Europe is falling behind in growing sectors as well as in areas of innovation such as genomics, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence, where it is being outpaced by the United States and China. A discussion paper from the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), suggests five paths that could help the continent regain its competitive edge. The paper, Innovation in Europe: Changing the game to regain a competitive edge (PDF--395KB), focuses on ways that Europe could seek to build on its strengths rather than trying to play catch-up, given that it is hindered by fragmentation and lack of scale. This article is a condensed version of the original paper, which draws from MGI research as well as from a recent collaboration with the World Economic Forum. Given Europe's relatively high wage costs and low reliance on natural resources, innovation remains of fundamental importance for the continent's economic and social system. European companies still account for one-quarter of total industrial R&D in the world, but over the past ten years US companies have continued to increase their share, reinforcing their leadership position.
