Subtle Medical today announced its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered image processing software, SubtleMR, received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). SubtleMR uses deep learning algorithms, denoising and resolution enhancement to improve the image quality of existing scanners. "We are pleased to received FDA clearance for SubtleMR, and we look forward to helping radiology departments and imaging centers get the most out of their existing MRI scanners," said Enhao Gong, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Subtle Medical. The software, which Subtle Medical said is compatible with any brand of MRI scanner and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), could be beneficial for patients who have trouble staying still for long periods of time. Reducing the scan time for these patients not only improves the patient experience but could result in fewer artifact-ridden images and the need for physicians to re-scan an individual.

Over the last few years, fake news has been a major worry. Fake news is believed to have played an important role in such important electoral processes as the 2016 US presidential election and the Brexit referendum on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union the same year. There is now another kind of fake that is causing concern: deep fakes (a portmanteau of deep learning and fake). A deep fake is the use of artificial intelligence to create and edit seemingly real videos and audio recordings of people. To do this, deepfakes use Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which are a kind of algorithm that can create new data from existing datasets.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is funding three projects to explore the possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI) in the global anti-doping programme. In conjunction with the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ), it follows a call for applications for targeted research on the application and impact of AI in the area of anti-doping. Eight proposals were submitted and, after careful assessment by WADA and FRQ, the successful projects were selected for funding. WADA senior director, sciences and international partnerships, Dr Olivier Rabin, said: "AI is an exciting area to be explored and WADA believes there is enormous untapped potential for its use within anti-doping, particularly when it comes to the analysis of big data. "In time, we think it could have a hugely positive impact.

The aftershocks that follow an earthquake can be even more dangerous and damaging than the main temblor, for example by collapsing already structurally weakened buildings. With deep learning emerging as something of a panacea in the world of science, AI researchers and seismologists alike are leveraging the tech in pursuit of better aftershock forecast solutions. A major breakthrough seemed to occur in 2018 when a Harvard University and Google research team published the paper Deep learning of aftershock patterns following large earthquakes in Nature. The paper proposed a deep learning model that significantly improved aftershock location forecasts compared to previous methods. It went viral on social media and garnered global mainstream media coverage.

Earlier this week, IBM (Nasdaq: IBM) declared its third quarter results that exceeded earnings expectations despite missing revenue estimates. The stock fell nearly 5% post the result announcement in the after-hours session. Revenues for the third quarter fell 3.9% over the year to $18.03 billion, missing the Street's forecast of $18.23 billion for the quarter.

Would a race of thinking, autonomous, conscious machines be our slaves, our masters, or our partners? Computers have already surpassed us in their ability to perform certain cognitive tasks. Perhaps it won't be long till every household has a super intelligent robot who can outperform us in almost every domain. While future AI might be excellent at appearing conscious, could AI ever actually become conscious? Would forcing conscious robots to work for us be akin to slavery?

I've never really thought about how important personalized medical care is until I was diagnosed with breast cancer myself - it gets real personal real quick. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and also my anniversary of being diagnosed and now cancer free! So, I felt it appropriate to focus on AI developments in early detection. I am healthy, active and do not have the gene for breast cancer. Matter of fact, on the human medical doctor prediction scale it was a 3% chance my abnormal mammogram would come back anything but precancerous tissue.

In 2011, scientists made one of the most important discoveries in the history of AI development. They found that graphics processing units (GPUs) are far better at simulating biological learning than central processing units (CPUs). In retrospect, it seems obvious. Human brains are much more like GPUs than CPUs. Both brains and GPUs rely on parallel processing that simulates and predicts real world physics.
