AI in health care: Capacity, capability, and a future of active health in Asia – MIT Technology Review Insights

#artificialintelligence

Software and platforms powered by AI are expected to transform Asia's health-care landscape in the decade ahead, allowing health-care providers and government health-care authorities to increase capacity of service delivery, speed of diagnoses, quality of care, and overall patient health outcomes. The use of AI cannot be described as entirely nascent; indeed, it is already being widely used--particularly in developed Asia. Yet new use cases, new innovations, and new centers of AI adoption are emerging constantly, and the continuing urgency by governments and tech players to diffuse AI across health-care ecosystems will bring untold benefits to patients' lives across the region. AI is efficiently narrowing Asia's health-care gap. AI is an important and pragmatic solution for increasing the capacity and efficiency of health-care provision across the region.

Artificial Intelligence Will Detect Hidden Targets In 2020 Wargame

#artificialintelligence

The Army wants AI to detect hidden targets, like this M109A6 Paladin armored howitzer camouflaged during wargames in Germany. AUSA: The Army has developed AI to spot hidden targets in reconnaissance photos and will field-test it in next year's massive Defender 20 wargames in Europe, the head of the service's Artificial Intelligence Task Force said here. It's just one of a host of AI applications the Army is exploring with combat applications, Brig. Shooting down drones, aiming tank guns, coordinating resupply and maintenance, planning artillery barrages, stitching different sensor feeds together into a single coherent picture, analyzing how terrain blocks units' fields of fire and warning commanders where there are blind spots in their defenses are all uses that will be tested. The most high-profile example of AI on the battlefield to date, the controversial Project Maven, used machine learning algorithms to sift hours of full-motion video looking for suspected terrorists and insurgents.

Vehicles passing through customs gate to be scanned via AI

#artificialintelligence

Turkey is about to add a new addition to its high technology investments and projects in order to increase efficiency in preventing smuggling and reducing formalities at customs. A total of 68 X-Ray Vehicle and Container Scanning systems, which provide detailed analysis of all kinds of vehicles and containers entering and exiting from customs gates without requiring physical intervention, were installed in all customs gates and ports with high trade volume, Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan said. "The Scanning Network Project will be completely developed with our local and national resources and will automatically identify illegal crime and threat elements in vehicle or cargo by using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies," Pekcan told Anadolu Agency (AA) in an interview yesterday. These high-tech systems provide x-ray film of vehicles and containers and ensure that customs controls, which can last for hours, take place quickly and in a qualified way within minutes, she said. She stressed that the ministry has established technical infrastructure to carry out customs controls in a manner that does not break the pace of international trade and to combat illegal trade in the most effective way by keeping public health and safety at the forefront.

Kenyan insurers utilizing artificial intelligence to curb fraud cases

#artificialintelligence

Insurers are now utilizing artificial intelligence to curb fraud cases in their motor insurance claim processes. Deloitte's Insurance Outlook Report 2019/2020 East Africa showed that while motor private and medical business classes are the largest classes, they are also among the most loss-making businesses. The report urges insurers to explore other emerging business classes that have a potential for growth to diversify their business mix. With over 25% of Kenya's insurance industry income fraudulently claimed, Kenindia Assurance is one of the insures who have taken steps to curb the fraud. Kenindia Assurance, Deputy General Manager Joyce Mathenge says that motor insurance is the main contributor to insurance fraud and hence the need to develop mechanisms to lower their risks.

Google AI Decodes Broken Greek Texts Better than Humans

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to revolutionize the world in the coming decades. An example of this comes from Google's AI research division (DeepMind) which has used the technology to decipher broken and fragmentary ancient Greek texts. The DeepMind project has proven that it is superior to humans when it comes to understanding and deciphering ancient texts that have puzzled researchers for years. Google's artificial intelligence (AI) research arm, DeepMind, and the University of Oxford conducted a project that involved the analysis of Greek inscriptions . Many of them date back millennia and they are often broken and missing letters.

Is the stethoscope obsolete? More doctors are using high-tech devices that use artificial intelligence and apps to diagnose patients

#artificialintelligence

Students at the Indianapolis-based medical school, one of the nation's largest, learn stethoscope skills but also get training in hand-held ultrasound in a program launched there last year by Dr. Paul Wallach, an executive associate dean. He created a similar program five years ago at the Medical College of Georgia and predicts that within the next decade, hand-held ultrasound devices will become part of the routine physical exam, just like the reflex hammer.
