Is the US Losing the Artificial Intelligence Arms Race?

#artificialintelligence

The U.S. government, long a proponent of advancing technology for military purposes, sees artificial intelligence as key to the next generation of fighting tools. Several recent investments and Pentagon initiatives show that military leaders are concerned about keeping up with – and ahead of – China and Russia, two countries that have made big gains in developing artificial-intelligence systems. AI-powered weapons include target recognition systems, weapons guided by AI, and cyberattack and cyberdefense software that runs without human intervention. The U.S. defense community is coming to understand that AI will significantly transform, if not completely reinvent, the world's military power balance. The concern is more than military.

Who Uses Text to Speech (TTS) Anyway? - ReadSpeaker

#artificialintelligence

First things first: what is TTS? TTS or Text-to-Speech technology converts text into spoken speech. If you know Siri or those handy voice GPS directions on smartphones, then congratulations! Since 1000 AD, humans have strived to create synthetic speech, but it didn't enter the mainstream until the mid 1970s – early 1980s when computer operating systems began implementing it. Walt Tetschner, leader of the group that produced DECtalk in 1983, explains that while the voice wasn't perfect, it was still natural sounding and was used by companies such as MCI and Mtel (two-way paging).

Suncorp uses AI to drill into insurance claim data

#artificialintelligence

Suncorp used an artificial intelligence engine to identify hundreds of claims that had fallen off the radar of a particular leader and business, allowing it to expedite their resolution. The insurer was last year revealed to be a user of ThoughtSpot's search and AI-driven analytics platform when the vendor launched A/NZ operations. Analytics transformation principal consultant David Babich told ThoughtSpot's Beyond 2018 conference last year that adoption of ThoughtSpot was designed "to increase our end users' self-service capability". "Every time someone had a question, or even needed to change a simple question within our organisation, it required a technical response from our chief data office," Babich said. "Our end users did not have the tools or capabilities to make those changes themselves."

How AI can democratize the workplace

#artificialintelligence

How can HR professionals predict the future performance of a candidate? The answer, as always, is to look at past behaviour. The way we continue to define and measure success, however, continues to rely on antiquated indicators, such as an university degree or work experience, presented in an increasingly outdated format: the resume. Research by CareerBuilder shows that most employers spend less than two minutes reading a CV, and even this may be a generous estimate. When a hiring manager has so little time to evaluate whether someone is fit for the role, this leaves little room for a candidate who doesn't tick prescriptive boxes, or who may not have had a conventional education or career journey.

Man And Superman - Human History Bifurcates (Video)

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence enabled automation is sweeping through society and it will have a species level impact on humanity during this century. During a keynote address on August 22, 2019, at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in Kolkata, we explore this evolution and the nuances of humanity's future. It's a great honor and immense pleasure for me to return to this forum after three years to discuss a topic that I had spoken on back in October 2016: The Future of Capitalism. Some of you may have heard that talk either here, in person, or on YouTube. Let me summarize the basic premise of what we discussed, before I address today's topic, Man and Superman. I had said that I am optimistic about the next couple of decades. I believe, strongly, that entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial capitalism can be democratized, and wealth can be created in the middle of the pyramid using capitalistic principles. In the next 2-3 decades, the potential for distributed capitalism is very high and the outcome should be extremely positive around the world. That is the mission upon which my current work with One Million by One Million is based. We're trying to help a million entrepreneurs achieve a million dollars in annual revenue and beyond, thereby creating a trillion dollars in global GDP and 10 million jobs. However, beyond our entrepreneurship development work, there is tremendous inequality due to technology and automation on the horizon.

'Crosses a moral boundary': Chief Scientist warns against risks of artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

The nation's chief scientist has urged software developers on the cusp of artificial intelligence breakthroughs not to lose their "moral compass" amid fears humans will be treated as data points by our largest companies. Alan Finkel, speaking at an artificial intelligence summit at Monash University in Melbourne on Thursday, said there was a "golden opportunity" for Australia to be a world leader in scientific discovery while also holding to the ideals of a virtuous society. He said there was enormous potential for artificial intelligence to deliver substantial benefits to Australians in areas as varied as manufacturing and financial services. Chief Scientist Alan Finkel says the advent of artificial intelligence will need both technological as well as ethical considerations.Credit:Alex Ellinghausen But Dr Finkel pointed to how Google this month obtained a patent to use sensors and cameras to monitor home activity. It claims to be able to work out the title of a book someone is reading in their bed.

New Zealand bans 'abhorrent' video game seemingly based on Christchurch mass shooting

FOX News

Fox News Flash top headlines for Oct. 31 are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com New Zealand has banned an "abhorrent" video game that the country's chief censor said glorifies the mass shooting at two mosques in Christchurch that killed 51 worshipers last March, according to a report. Chief Censor David Shanks said in a statement that the creators of the game set out to "produce and sell a game designed to place the player in the role of a white supremacist terrorist killer." He classified the game as objectionable, adding that in the game "anyone who isn't a white heterosexual male is a target for simply existing," Reuters reported.

Google AI beats experienced human players at real-time strategy game StarCraft II

#artificialintelligence

Players of the science-fiction video game StarCraft II faced an unusual opponent this summer. An artificial intelligence (AI) known as AlphaStar -- which was built by Google's AI firm DeepMind -- achieved a grandmaster rating after it was unleashed on the game's European servers, placing within the top 0.15% of the region's 90,000 players. The result, published on 30 October in Nature1, shows that an AI can compete at the highest levels of StarCraft II, a massively popular online strategy game in which players compete in real time as one of three factions -- the human Terran forces or the aliens Protoss and Zerg -- battling against each other in a futuristic warzone. DeepMind, which previously built world-leading AIs that play chess and Go, targeted StarCraft II as its next benchmark in the quest for a general AI -- a machine capable of learning or understanding any task that humans can -- because of the game's strategic complexity and rapid pace. "I did not expect AI to essentially be superhuman in this domain so quickly, maybe not for another couple of years," says Jon Dodge, an AI researcher at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

6 steps cities should take to pave the way for self-driving cars

#artificialintelligence

If forecasts hold true, autonomous vehicles (AVs) operating as taxi fleets without human safety drivers could be in widespread use in cities around the world by 2030. The current commercial operation of robo-taxis for hire is, for now, very limited, and does not yet operate without human supervision. A leading example of one such service is Waymo One, which has been operating in Phoenix, Arizona since December 2018. Waymo One operates in a limited area, has a safety driver ready to intervene if needed, and charges rates in a similar way to other ride sharing companies for the service. With the influx of this technology, some cities are being called upon to address residents' concerns about autonomous vehicles operating on their city's streets.

Chatbots and artificial intelligence influence in education

#artificialintelligence

Chatbots can be used for several purposes, such as helping customers and answering complex FAQs. They have even been used to help pick candidates in recruitment processes, so it is no surprise that the educational system is trying to implement chatbots. The scopes of application could advance administration with the aim of facilitating procedures, as a date reminder, assistance in the reinforcement of educational content and mentoring and accompaniment actions. Properly trained with a huge quantity of data, a chatbot could ease both the educational process of the student and the tasks of the teacher. This artificial assistant could respond to a 24/7 demand, allowing professors to take care of the most qualitative tasks.
