Data skills shortage preventing companies delivering personalisation -
More than one-in-four UK business leaders believe a lack of data skills within their organisation (27%) is impacting their ability to deliver engaging, personalised experiences for customers. Adobe's Mind the Data Gap Report surveyed 750 business leaders. Adobe found 22% felt their ability to develop personalised customer experiences was held back by lack of a data-centric culture. Twenty-four percent identified the absence of a unified technology platform as the biggest obstacle. Adobe's Mind the Data Gap fieldwork was conducted by London Research, between June and July 2019. The company surveyed 750 European business leaders, 250 each in the UK, France and Germany.
Part 2 -- what can these three Silicon Valley AI startups do for your business?
In the era of disruption, the largest, incumbent organisations need to innovate and take advantage of the growing global partner ecosystem. Instead of running away from the innovators, the traditional enterprise must turn and fight, by taking advantage of the different technologies in the marketplace. In one way, this can be achieved by building out a solid technology or IT team, whose work is stitched into the fabric of the business. But, every business needs a partner -- it's unwise to go it alone, especially if you're not an expert in a specific field. Below, Information Age identifies in three parts, three Silicon Valley AI startups that can help your business seize the advantage of technology and avoid disruption in the digital era.
Foundational Economy
The Economic Action Plan (EAP) has set the direction for a broader and more balanced approach to economic development with a shift towards a focus on place and making communities stronger and more resilient. The EAP places a greater emphasis on tackling inequality and signals a shift to a'something for something' relationship with business. Promoting inclusive growth through a new focus on the foundational economy sits alongside the other three pillars of our Economic Contract; supporting business investment that future-proofs the economy through Calls to Action; a regional approach to investing in the skills people need to enter, remain and progress in work; and the infrastructure communities need to be connected and vibrant. The foundational economy approach offers the chance to reverse the deterioration of employment conditions, reduce the leakage of money from communities and address the environmental cost of extended supply chains. With join-up across portfolio responsibilities we are driving a greater synergy between the Valleys Taskforce, Better Jobs Closer to Home programmes and maximising the social value of procurement with what may be described as mainstream Government economic interventions. A Ministerial Advisory Board Task and Finish Group on the Foundational Economy has been established to provide advice to Welsh Ministers on current and future interventions and best practice; support wider engagement with stakeholders in the foundational economy; and promote join-up of relevant government and non-governmental initiatives.

Optimizing portfolio value with Amazon SageMaker automatic model tuning Amazon Web Services
Financial institutions that extend credit face the dual tasks of evaluating the credit risk associated with each loan application and determining a threshold that defines the level of risk they are willing to take on. The evaluation of credit risk is a common application of machine learning (ML) classification models. The determination of a classification threshold, though, is often treated as a secondary concern and set in an ad hoc, unprincipled manner. As a result, institutions may be creating underperforming portfolios and leaving risk-adjusted return on the table. In this blog post, we describe how to use Amazon SageMaker automatic model tuning to determine the classification threshold that maximizes the portfolio value of a lender choosing a subset of borrowers to lend to. More generally, we describe a method of choosing an optimal threshold, or set of thresholds, in a classification setting. The method we describe doesn't rely on rules of thumb or generic metrics. It is a systematic and principled method that relies on a business success metric specific to the problem at hand. The method is based upon utility theory and the idea that a rational individual makes decisions so as to maximize her expected utility, or subjective value. In this post, we assume that the lender is attempting to maximize the expected dollar value of her portfolio by choosing a classification threshold that divides loan applications into two groups: those she accepts and lends to, and those she rejects. In other words, the lender is searching over the space of potential threshold values to find the threshold that results in the highest value for the function that describes her portfolio value.
Diplomacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Note from the CPD Blog Manager: A previous version of this piece was originally published by the Elcano Royal Institute. Riding the waves of growing interest about artificial intelligence (AI) in international relations (IR) and security studies, the debate about the role of AI in diplomacy is also gaining momentum, although academic discussions are progressing rather slowly, without a clear analytical focus. The key question on the mind of policymakers at the moment is whether AI would be able to deliver on its promises instead of entering another season of skepticism and stagnation. If AI would be able to demonstrate value in a consistent manner by providing reliable assistance in areas of diplomatic interest such as in consular services, crisis management, public diplomacy and international negotiations, as suggested above, then the future of AI in diplomacy should look bright. If, on the other hand, the ratio between costs and contributions of AI applications to diplomatic work would stay high, then the appetite for AI integration would likely decline.
A new AI camera recognizes objects faster and more efficiently
The image recognition technology used in today's autonomous cars and aerial drones as well as tomorrow's cancer-seeking robotic medical devices, all depend on artificial intelligence. These "computers that see" teach themselves to recognize objects -- a dog, a pedestrian crossing the street, a stopped car or a cancer tumor. Now, researchers at Stanford University have devised a new type of camera system that can classify images faster and more energy efficiently, and that could one day be built small enough to be embedded in the devices themselves, something that is not possible today. "That autonomous car you just passed has a relatively huge, relatively slow, energy intensive computer in its trunk," says Gordon Wetzstein, an assistant professor of electrical engineering and (by courtesy) computer science at Stanford, who directed the research. Wetzstein and Julie Chang, a doctoral candidate in his lab and first author on the paper, have married two types of computers into one -- creating a hybrid optical-electrical computer designed specifically for image analysis.
US maintains edge over China in industrial artificial intelligence solutions
US-based industrial manufacturers are slightly ahead of their Chinese counterparts in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities into their operations, even though both countries have a near-equal number of installed bases of AI-enabled devices, according to global tech market advisory firm ABI Research. Both countries are incentivized to develop approaches that encourage AI adoption in industrial manufacturing, but "the US has managed to achieve more momentum," according to Lian Jye Su, principal analyst. This is due to "acute challenges in manpower and rising cost of materials. So they need to adopt AI to make sure they can overcome these challenges." SEE: Deep learning: An insider's guide (free PDF) (TechRepublic) In China, manufacturers can still rely on "abundant human resources and government tax incentives to compete in the international market, keeping their margin healthy,'' Su added. The expensive US labor force has driven the industrial sector to enhance production efficiency and lower operational costs. This is prompting the major cloud service providers, smart manufacturing platform vendors, pure-play industrial AI platform and service providers, edge industrial AI gateway, and server and chipset vendors to partner to bring AI into industrial manufacturing, he explained. The partnerships are enabling an "end-to-end, cloud-to-edge solution to enhance operational efficiency, reduce bottlenecks and optimize resource consumption in factories," he said. AI is predominantly used in two areas: Overall efficiency enhancement and machine vision for inspection, production, and surveillance, according to Su. "For example, Instrumental is using images of printed circuit board to train their AI model in order to identify faults and low quality production on the smartphone production line,'' he said.
NBC News Digital employees unionize, accuse management of mishandling 'serious incidents' of sexual misconduct
Protesters and activists from UltraViolet stormed the NBC headquarters in New York City demanding Comcast and NBC executives take action and responsibility for allegations made in Ronan Farrow's book'Catch and Kill.' NBC News Digital employees have formed a union, accusing management of mishandling "serious incidents of sexual misconduct" that have created an onslaught of negative attention for the Peacock Network. "We love working at NBC News Digital. But no organization is perfect, and there are serious issues that keep the company from being as great as it can be," the NBC News Digital employees said in a statement Wednesday announcing their partnering with the NewsGuild of New York. But the digital employees aren't solely fed up with management botching sexual misconduct scandals. "A company with such incredible resources can and should do more to close gender and race wage gaps, address chronic understaffing, meaningfully prioritize diversity, promote transparency, and offer job protections," the statement continued.
