They will track you by your speech: U.K. finance firm invests in behavioral AI system that analyzes how customers speak to provide personalized services

#artificialintelligence

Nationwide Building Society, a finance firm based in the United Kingdom, has just announced they will be investing in a "behavioral analytics startup," known as Scaled Insights. According to Nationwide, Scaled Insight's speech analysis AI will be used to build individual profiles for their clientele, in order to tailor the bank's communications to fit each customer's needs -- or "linguistic personality," as they're calling it. The mainstream media is reporting on how a hospital in Leeds is already using this technology to help patients, perhaps in order to present this new AI technology as benevolent. But the truth is that no large corporation ever makes a large investment without expecting an even larger return. Nationwide is expected to pump $5.31 billion into new technologies over the next five years.

CMS Contest Gets Real About Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

How can AI tools--such as deep learning and neural networks--be used to predict unplanned hospital and skilled nursing facility admissions and adverse events? In the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Health Outcomes Challenge, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is dangling up to $1.65 million in prize money to the innovators who can figure it out. Six hospitals and health systems are among the 25 participants who were selected from a field of more than 300 submissions. The ultimate goal is to harness AI solutions to predict health outcomes for healthcare providers and clinicians, as well as potential use in CMS Innovation Center innovative payment and service delivery models. "Artificial Intelligence is a vehicle that can help drive our system to value--proven to reduce out-of-pocket costs and improve quality," said CMS Administrator Seema Verma in a news release.

Head of Applied AI

The Software Engineering Institute is creating a movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security. As our government customers adopt artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we are working to provide the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for robust and trustworthy mission capabilities. Our work includes scalable AI and ML; the tailoring of modern software practices for AI-enabled systems; architectures, design patterns, modeling, and representations; building tools and processes for trustworthy development of AI-enabled capabilities; and test, evaluation, verification, and validation of AI systems. Of course, building and maturing the discipline of AI Engineering also requires applying AI technologies to build real-world, mission-scale capabilities through envisioning creative solutions, solving practical engineering problems, and learning from those experiences. Are you creative, curious, energetic, collaborative, technology-focused, and hard-working?

Amazing AI generates entire bodies of people who don't exist

#artificialintelligence

A new deep learning algorithm can generate high-resolution, photorealistic images of people -- faces, hair, outfits, and all -- from scratch. The AI-generated models are the most realistic we've encountered, and the tech will soon be licensed out to clothing companies and advertising agencies interested in whipping up photogenic models without paying for lights or a catering budget. At the same time, similar algorithms could be misused to undermine public trust in digital media. The algorithm was developed by DataGrid, a tech company housed on the campus of Japan's Kyoto University, according to a press release. In a video showing off the tech, the AI morphs and poses model after model as their outfits transform, bomber jackets turning into winter coats and dresses melting into graphic tees.

Should We Be Afraid of AI?

#artificialintelligence

Is AI something to fear? Recently major names in the technology industry have been talking about why the potential applications of artificial intelligence could be something we should be worried about. Their argument comes from two different places. One the one hand, they see AI as one of the most fundamental transformative technologies that we have ever seen in the history of mankind, and on the other hand, that transformative power is something we should be scared of and be wary about. If AI is transformative, then it has the power to be transformative both for good reasons as well as bad.

6 predictions from Gartner could reshape C-suite priorities

#artificialintelligence

Humans used technology to introduce products into the market. Technology later offered humans access to new ways of selling those products, and new ways to increase their efficiency. Now, technology's relentless cycle of innovation has touched humanity, redefining what it means to be human, a meaningful change that will impact business priorities in the not-so distant future. Daryl Plummer, distinguished vice president and Gartner Fellow, outlined the analyst firm's top predictions for 2020 and beyond, speaking at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo on Tuesday. In Gartner's view, the workplace of the future will see technology augment human capacity, overhaul employee experience and open markets for expansion.

Fourth Industrial Revolution: How Mexico approaches Artificial Intelligence Contxto

#artificialintelligence

Contxto – Did you know that Mexico was the first Latin American country to launch a national AI strategy? As of 2018, its implementation in both the public and private sectors is an ongoing reality. Some experts consider AI and its offshoots, machine learning and Big Data, a part of the "Fourth Industrial Revolution." With their growing importance in practically every industry, incentives to evolve have also followed suit. Of course, Latin America doesn't want to be left behind.

Dev Kit Weekly: BeagleBone AI

#artificialintelligence

This week we jump right into a descendant of one of the original open hardware maker pro development kits that has gotten a facelift for artificial intelligence applications – BeagleBone AI. The BeagleBone AI is a performance-packed platform is based on Texas Instruments' Sitara AM5729 SoC, which integrates so much heterogeneous compute power it's actually tucked away underneath a heatsink on the board. Dual TI C66x floating-point DSPs, four Embedded Vision Engines, a dual-core PowerVR 3D GPU, a Vivante 2D graphics accelerator, dual Arm Cortex-A15 cores, dual Arm Cortex-M4 cores, an H.264 video encode/decode subsystem, and two programmable real-time units (RTUs).Beyond just a long list of processing engines, all of that diverse compute makes the BeagleBone AI a perfect match for a wide range of neural networking applications. For instance, high-speed video interfaces on the board can be used to pipe in video streams through the encode/decode subsystem and pass them on to a CNN running on one of the DSPs or GPU. Meanwhile, code or control logic running on one of the Arm cores or PRUs could trigger an action.

Halloween Special: Fears that Haunt HR about the Future of Work

#artificialintelligence

This Halloween, we attempt to discuss what fears haunt HR about the future of work. Do you fear of AI taking over our jobs – the robot apocalypse as they call it? Does the visual of deserted workplaces – rife with cobwebs, haunted by the voices of former employees – where machines have taken over make you lose your sleep? We asked leaders engaged in HR, HR technology, and the future of work practices on what the biggest fears of HR are. Your HCM System controls the trinity of talent acquisition, management and optimization - and ultimately, multiple mission-critical performance outcomes.
