Dual Use and Responsible Research: Learning about Ethical Challenges Ahead - Ethics Dialogues
Dual use and responsible research: ethical challenges' took place at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm from the 14th to the 17th of November 2018. This workshop showcased the interdisciplinary nature of not only the HBP itself, but the dual use of brain science and the societal impacts this may have. Hence, the purpose of the workshop was to offer a space for discussing both the disciplinary aspects of the HBP, such as neuroscience and medicine, and the wider interdisciplinary aspects such as dual-use and responsible research and innovation (RRI). In order to engage as wide a range of students and researchers as possible with these topics, the workshop was open to all. With lectures covering topics such as the fascinating chemistry behind drug addiction and the revolutionary technology CRISPR that enables geneticists and medical researchers to edit parts of a genome, the interest in the workshop was high.
Research, ethics & societal impact - HBP
This workshop aims to provide participants with insights on ethical aspects of dual-use research in neuroscience and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). Lectures will be given by some of the world's leading experts on dual-use in neuroscience research, and by active researchers on RRI. The topics covered will include the chemistry of the brain and dual action of drugs, novel incapacitants, ethics awareness and engagement and RRI. An important ingredient of the workshop is the use of team-based learning techniques.
Extend raises $16 million for AI that optimizes extended warranty offers
Extended warranties are big business. A report from Research and Markets estimates the segment will reach a whopping $50.2 billion by 2026. There's unsurprisingly merchant interest in the opportunity, but most sellers lack the know-how and bandwidth required to pursue it. That's where Extend comes in. The San Francisco-based company, which offers what it describes as a full stack extended warranty program, today announced that it's raised $16.4 million in funding led by GreatPoint Ventures with participation from Pritzker Group Venture Capital, Lightbank, and Shah Capital Partners, along with ex-CEO of Equifax Rick Smith, Katerra CEO Michael Marks, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins, and Village Global cofounder Erik Torenberg. Extend founder and CEO Woodrow Levin said the capital infusion will support Extend's product development efforts.

Robot arm lets you remotely lend friends a helping hand with repairs
A robot arm could help you get help from a friend. Janis Stolzenwald and Walterio Mayol-Cuevas at the University of Bristol in the UK have developed a handheld robot that lets someone remotely provide assistance or guidance. It could be used to inspect or carry out maintenance in factories or plants, allowing an expert to complete certain tasks without having to be present in person, says Stolzenwald. The set-up involves a camera-equipped robot that is held by someone on site.
Global Big Data Conference
The use of computer vision technologies to boost machine learning continues to accelerate, driven by optimism that classifying huge volumes of images will unleash all sorts of new applications and forms of autonomy. But there's a darker side to this transformation: These learning systems remain remarkably easy to fool using so-called "adversarial attacks." Even worse is that leading researchers acknowledge they don't really have a solution for stopping mischief makers from wreaking havoc on these systems. "Can we defend against these attacks?" said Nicolas Papernot, a research scientist at Google Brain, the company's deep learning artificial intelligence research team. "Unfortunately, the answer is no."

How AI Is Impacting School Energy Savings And Sustainability Practices
The subject of artificial intelligence (AI) in education often centers around edtech breakthroughs and the ongoing evolution of the learning spaces inside schools. But AI is also experiencing growth in other sectors that have a direct impact on schools, presenting more areas for the education community to study. Take, for instance, construction and green energy resources. As schools look to cut costs, they are also increasing the adoption of sustainability programs. New state-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies may offer cost savings while reducing a school's carbon footprint.
