In rural Karnataka -- AI answers complaints in Kannada
Utilities supplying electricity in urban areas tend to get inundated by customer complaints of power outage, low voltage and other issues during summers and monsoon. Telephone helplines manned by humans tend to be inaccessible as small groups of workers who man the helplines cannot respond to the flood of calls. The state-run Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), which supplies power to eight districts in Karnataka, has now turned to an artificial intelligence-powered system to service the over 9,000 complaints it receives on its helpline systems each day. Bescom is tying up with the Medical Intelligence and Language Engineering (or MILE) Lab at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to create an AI-based complaint response system than can cater to as many as 500 calls at a time -- much higher than the 60 under the system that the utility employs at present. "What we will have is a technology where when someone calls in the machine will take over and the machine will recognise whatever the speaker says whether it is in Kannada or English. It will understand the complaint -- whether it is with regard to a bill or power outage or concession for solar energy -- and find an answer from the server. It will then synthesise the answer again to text and convert to speech," said A G Ramakrishnan, the head of IISc's MILE.
China Cables exposes horrors of Artificial Intelligence usage by China to put millions in detention
The China Cables, obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, reveal about the camps in which more than a million Uighurs and other ethnic minorities are understood to be detained. This is for the first time a document outlining the camps has been leaked. In an exclusive Skype interview with Fergus Shiel, Project manager of China Cables, Saurabh Bose of WION asks about the classified intelligence briefings that reveal about the scope and ambition of Chines govt's AI-based policing platform. Two things differentiate China Cables from previously investigations, that an operation manual has revealed the camps in which more than a million Uighurs and other ethnic minorities are understood to be detained. The NYT had policy settings of these camps, anecdotal reports, satellite images, but this is the very first time that a document outlining the camps have been leaked we understand that it is the first document of it's kind to come out of China for the last thirty years because of it's classification level.
NATO, US Army to conduct air assault 'forcible entry' exercise in Lithuania

Exercise Swift Response 18 was a U.S. Army Europe-led multinational exercise held in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland - file photo. NATO and U.S. Army Europe forces will conduct "forcible entry" combat exercises in Lithuania, Georgia and Poland to prepare rapid response attack units for the possibility of war on the European continent. The Army's 82nd Airborne division will drop into hostile territory to lead air assaults in as many as five attack operations across three allied countries of enormous strategic significance to NATO forces. "Having our troops and allies involved in what is called a joint forcible entry will enable us to go in and take an area such as an airfield so it can used by friendly forces," Col. Joe Scrocca, director of public affairs, U.S. Army Europe, told reporters at the Association of the United States Army annual symposium in Oct.
Sony, Sharp supply parts to U.S.-blacklisted China security video firm Hikvision
Sony Corp. and Sharp Corp. have supplied parts to video surveillance company Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., one of 28 Chinese entities blacklisted by the United States last month over human rights violations, the Chinese company's product brochures show. Hikvision -- the world's largest video surveillance company -- employs image sensors supplied by Sony in 180 of its surveillance camera models and sensors from Sharp in two camera models, according to its product brochures. The company previously stated on its website that one of its surveillance camera models could identify members of the Uighur ethnic minority group, but it removed the product from the website after the company was added to the U.S. trade blacklist. Communist Party documents obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists have revealed that China has deployed a surveillance and predictive-policing system in its crackdown on Uighurs and other Muslims minorities in China's far-western Xinjiang autonomous region. BBC video footage has shown Hikvision surveillance cameras installed in a Chinese detention center for Uighurs.
Five Challenges of Machine Learning DevOps - DevOps.com
As organizations add machine learning (ML) to their workflows, it's tempting to try to squeeze model creation and deployment into the existing software development lifecycle (SDLC). However, ML is fundamentally different than traditional applications, and it's important to account for that in a new, unique process called the machine learning development lifecycle. We have identified five challenges every organization should keep in mind as they begin to support ML development. Machine learning is successful when the right tool is selected for a given job. Depending on the use case, a data scientist might choose Python, R, Scala or another language to build one model, and another language for a second model.
IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Artificial Intelligence 2020 Predictions
This IDC study provides IDC's 2020 top 10 predictions for artificial intelligence (AI). "Artificial Intelligence is poised to be more prolific and span every aspect of our lives and business. AI disrupters will enjoy a differentiated and sustainable measure of success ranging from superior customer engagements, accelerated rates of innovation, higher competitiveness, higher margins, and productive employees. Is Deep Learning a Game Changer for Marketing Analytics?
Companies are already making sophisticated marketing decisions with data and analytics. Will deep learning enable a leap forward -- or just marginal gains? Deep learning is delivering impressive results in AI applications. Apple's Siri, for example, translates the human voice into computer commands that allow iPhone owners to get answers to questions, send messages, and navigate their way to and from obscure locations. Automated driving enables people today to go hands-free on expressways, and it will eventually do the same on city streets.
